First time poster but I’ve been reading the forum for years. Just picked up this gem on Saturday. Traded in a 2018 F-150 to get back into a 1st gen. This is my third one and they are the most durable, reliable trucks I’ve owned. One of the old ones that’s now owned by a rancher in NM has 320k on it and they’re all rough miles. The dash doesn’t even rattle. Still tight.

I guide and outfit hunts and sell farms and ranches for a living and I absolutely trust these 1st gens when im in the middle of nowhere.

This truck is a 2 owner but the first owner only had it a short time. Great service records on carfax and only 134k on it

Plans include new suspension, archive garage rear leaf pack and 255/80/17’s. On my past trucks I put on the Old Man Emu suspension. Probably going that direction unless somebody has a better solution. I have never run Bilstein but the 6112/5160 combo is intriguing

Beautiful truck. I love it. You are right, these are trustworthy machines and starting to get more attention for their value and usefulness. It’s a lot like a Tacoma with a V-8 and more interior room. Dimensionally about the same size outside as a third Gen Tacoma but a much better truck all around. Jack of all trades and master of none.

by the way, your Job sounds amazing!!

Hey pal! Good to see you on the non-hunting forum, too!

I have owned a 1st Gens and loved them. Most recently, the '06 pictured below. I went with the Billy 5100 front + Toytec coils on this one and was very happy but have a number of buddies in 1st Gens who love their OME set ups too! When prices went nuts a few months back I sold the '06 and got into a '21 but part of me still wishes I stuck with the old girl . I went with 285/70/17s and it did well. Glad you got into one - enjoy!

Thanks Tim! I don’t spend a lot of time over there anymore. Just too busy really

Here’s a picture of my last 06 double cab. Sold it to a rancher in NM and it now has 320k on it. I purchased the OME kit from toytec in 2014 when they didn’t even know it would fit. Had them switch out the top hats and sell them to me. I was happy when they added that lift to their website and it’s served that truck I sold well. I bought it when it had 40k on the odometer so the last 280k haven’t been kind to it but it’s still going strong!

Thank you! I’m very blessed but as I get older and my kids get older it’s harder to stay away. Hard to enjoy it like I used to when I feel guilty for doing something so fun. It’s a lot of work but I get to see amazing country and hunt some amazing places

Nothing’s perfect as you know. Blessed here as well...and hard work always pays off. As always there are pros and cons to everything. But it sounds like you are doing something right. You are doing what you love (for the most part)and calling it work!

Your last truck is a beauty. I love that color!

Thank you to the moderators that were able to move this to the correct forum!

So I ordered the medium duty leaf pack last night and emailed archive garage asking if airbags and daystar cradles would work with them and explained that occasionally we are able to load a dead elk while in the bed(those are the best to pack out) and they responded that I should probably go with the heavy duty springs. Anybody running the HD springs from Archive? How bad is it unloaded? Probs my going to switch my order to the HD

Look into the ATS Springs as some members here have had great success and feedback. They have an HD Pack or can custom, as well. Priced right and good quality.

Bit of a dilemma. I was going to order the Old Man Emu suspension today and can’t find any anywhere and the earliest they say they might get them in is late August and my hunting season starts in mid August. Not going to be optimal. I can possibly wait if I have to but I may need to go a different direction

I can find King coilovers, Icons and possibly bilstein 6112’s but don’t know the first thing about them other than I’ll spend about double over the OME setup. I do like the adjustability of them but don’t know how they compare to each other

    Any help is appreciated

Shock industry is heavily impacted due to demand among other reasons, so finding what you want may require waiting or shopping around.

Kings and Icons are going to be more of a "performance" shock compared to OME and Bilstein. The King, Icon, and Fox level of shock can be fully rebuilt but they come at a premium.

Kings and Icons have 2.5" shock bodies with 3" diameter springs which are bigger than OME and Bilstein.

OME, Bilstein and others are cheaper, but they can't be rebuilt. If you blow a shock on non-rebuildables, you still might spend less on a replacement shock plus the initial buy-in than you would have for the buy-in price of a performance shock.

I love my Kings, they don't thrash me around at low speeds like my Toytecs did. They can also take speed good. They were pricey but they perform in the rugged desert. Only thing I wouldn't take them through at speed is whoops larger than a foot or so. I plan to have mine re-valved down the line to get even more performance.

@FirstGenVol has Icons, they may be able to speak of them. Can't think of anyone with OME or 6112s off the top of my head.

Here's a video of my Kings getting a workout.

@huntsonora welcome to the forum. One thing you'll want to think about is what type of off-roading you'll be doing. My ICON's are nice on road but low speed bumps(off pavement) is not where they shine. I get beat up pretty badly. Since most of our trails here in TN look like a goat path, I'm rarely going fast off-pavement. This is really my fault for not doing enough research on valving and how different shocks work. When these eventually wear out I may replace them with something else like King or ADS. We have several members running ADS with great feedback.

    Goat path evidence:

Thanks guys! Where the ranches I guide on are they have caliche country roads and unpaved state highways. Plenty of washboard and on the ranch I’m never going too fast. Slow rolling over uneven two tracks and paths really means for a side by side but we use out trucks to get there to glass country.

same in Sonora Mexico, lots and lots of dirt roads we drive fast on to get to the ranches but ones on the ranch we take everything slow

Archive Garage HD leaf pack will be here Tuesday, old man emu suspension and SPC UCS’s will be here in a week and I’ll get it all together.

Anybody have any ditch light brackets they really like?

Myself and a few others have the Rago Fabrication ditch light brackets. I really like mine and think they are super sturdy. I run two light pods on each bracket and antennas for comms. fdgijfgd (4).jpg

Suspension is done and I went with 255/80/17 Cooper ST Maxx tires.

The rake is significant, I’m hoping these Archive Garage HD leaf packs settle a little as I’m driving over rough ranch roads. Anybody have these and know if and how much they’ll settle?

Hi , I am a new member. nice rig! and nice Buck in your profile photo. I noticed your truck with the 255/80/R17 tires. I am in the market for new tires and was considering this size. How do you like them and have you had any experience in towing with them. Thought they might be be a little squirrely with being a narrow tire for towing.

    Thanks for the compliments.

I love the 255’s, they work very well for me and I’ve had no issues towing. I don’t tow heavy, just a trailer with a Honda pioneer side by side but I have the heavy duty archive garage rear leaf pack and I’m sure that makes a big difference over the stock rear suspension. Zero issues with these tires and I went from 19mpg to 17mpg with them. Towing is less

Thanks for the quick reply. My towing will be modest, maybe 4000 max. I am upgrading my lift and suspension from Tough Country Leveling kit and going with the Elka 2.5 front and rear plus a Toytec Progressive AAL. May upgrade to HDA leak pack if needed. Looks like 255's it is. Would like to find out more about your guide services as well. Do you have a website?
    Thanks again!
