Back story: I've looking to build an offroad trailer when my friend's 7x10 utility trailer he had sold came back up for sale. It's built right and handles great so I scooped it up from his friend and tore it down. I knew it would be a bit much for my Tacoma once fully fitted and since I could still get good money for it, I decided to sell it and get a new Tundra TRD SR5.
The plan is to raise it 4", enclose it and and get the right stuff that I need for camping. Since I really hate the small doors in the teardrops I'm not making a short one for sure, and since tent trailers take time to pop up, need care and can get COLD, that's not an option for me (mostly my wife, lol).

I like the level of commitment. These builds are fun to watch. I am looking forward to see what you come up with.

I am trying to stay within a budget of about $6k, so Timbren axles won't be part of this build as of yet. Maybe in the future. However ditching the original square drop axle for a new 3,500lb Dexter axle I did get the 24" height I was looking for. 17" Procomp steelies and 285/70-17AT tires will provide the cool guy look. Once installed I'll post pics; tires are on backorder. The trailer did come with tired shocks so I replaced them with Monroe 555003 and designed new lower shock mounts and sent to Sendcutsend.com for lasering.

First rabbit hole I went down quite willingly have you is the Electronics dept. Here's what I came up with for my needs:
    Renogy 200Ah Battery (120lbs, yikes)
Renogy 1000w true Sine Wave Inverter
    Progressive Dynamics 45W Converter/Charger
Go Power! TS-30 30 Amp Automatic Transfer Switch
Two Circuit 30A Load center Box
12V fuse box, Amp meter, switches, circuit breaker, etc.
    Generac 7117 - GP2200i 2,200 Watt Portable Inverter Generator, 50ST/CSA

A problem I ran into designing the rig is the crazy cost of RV doors and lack of custom sizes. I plan on putting my door at the rear left swinging to the right and locking open onto a latch. Size will be 24"x66" just tall enough for minimal ducking without making the trailer so tall. More on that later. I'm using 1-1/4 square tubing x .06 wall and found there's no nice budget friendly lock I could find and incorporate to the door other than the typical RV door latches which are fine and I've decided to use. I needed to mount/weld it somehow to the door so enough talk and here's another part I designed and had laser cut and bent from Sendcutsend.com for the lock. IMG_0082.jpg

I bought this Texas Bragg trailer in Anchorage in 2011. Time to modify! First thing is to replace the wood.

Definitely doable! Been sitting in the backyard ever since I got back...heh...heh...
Have decent welders. One is old as f++k but high amps. My trailer is currently used as a Big Wheel launch pad....

Might be too late to change but I'm gonna suggest it.... have the trailer run the same bolt pattern as the tow vehicle. Have the same tire size for truck and trailer. Spare tire on the trailer and a spare on the truck that are interchangeable. You don't have to worry about the first flat, you have to worry about the second one.

As for the walls, if you're gonna insulate them, use a foam insulation. Fiberglass with fall down over time from the vibration of going offroad.

I cut up old bed liners and used the plastic to create a barrier between my floor and the elements. Just an idea for you.

I also built much of the floor after the sides and roof so my floor was never exposed, plus I sealed it all with several coats of black asphaltic driveway sealer. Never will rot out. Just saying, floor is critical.

More advice for you guys, I keep old dried out tires on my trailer to help prevent theft, good tires are mounted up and ready in my garage. Impact and 15 min to get ready.

Thanks for your input. I'm using foam insulation for sure and plastic polywall sheet glued to the insulation and the bottom of the trailer then sandwiched together with wood strips on top to keep it rigid. An anti theft device as well is my lock n roll tongue hitch designed only for this type of connection so if the thief doesn't have that type of hitch then it's going to make it way harder to move. Plus I'll make some type of anchor into a fresh poured concrete footing and a bell to alert the hounds.
I ran into a little miscalculation on my part today. I grabbed 27" leaf springs instead of 25-1/4 so its pushing my axle center/ tires back a bit. Going to exchange on Monday. Check out those 33's though. Lug pattern is 6x 5.5 like my old Tacoma so I'll most likely be carrying two spares. Maybe in the future when I change idler hubs I can go with 5 x5-1/2 and get wheel adapters for 150mm BC.

Nothing new lately since I've been working a bunch and it's pretty hot when I get home. But It's on the ground and rolling and I did order and receive my 1x1 square tubing to start the frame and 1-1/4 tubing for the door. FYI, Evolution chop saws work really well but the saw blades don't last too long which I expected. I have the smallest 7-1/4 chop saw which cuts steel tubing fast and clean. Here's something cool though...I make custom Harley parts and I redesigned my switch perches and added mirror mounts to them. I'll start these Monday on the HAAS at work. IMG_0503.jpg

Nice switch perch design! Did you get the 25 1/4" leaf springs swapped in? Looking forward to watching how this project progresses!

Not jacking at all. Following. Quite interested how this project works out since I have a trailer that I want to do a makeover with and looking forward see what things OP does with it. Posted pics of my trailer for OP to see. OP positively acknowledged. That was nice. That's what counts. :smack:

Update !!! Subfloor and 2" foam going in !!!! Control center plate cut out and fitted to electronic switches, gauges, and stereo. Here's something cool I'll be using: The stereo comes with a back up camera which I'll place somewhere outside and if we hear a noise at night we can flip the stereo on and switch to camera mode to see what wildlife are outside.
