After the slot canyon, I went back and camped at the same spot as the night before, which has incredible views of the Escalante monument.

The next morning, of course, I hit Bryce Canyon.
    6A6C4DA0-A09B-4295-A28A-BB985810B2A9.jpg

It was absolutely incredible. Originally, I planned on doing two hikes to equal about 8miles. This was going to plan, until I slipped down the trail and cut myself up. That wasn’t the problem though, it wasn’t until 2 miles later I realized my phone fell out of my pocket when I tripped. And the previous 2 miles were all downhill.

So the adventure began. I found this couple I passed a bit earlier, they said they saw a phone and moved it to the side of the path 15min earlier as they didn’t know which way the person was going. Good to know.

I ran half a mile up the canyon and asked another couple. “Oh, we saw it. The folks guiding the horse tour took it.” Well shit, horses are a lot faster and tire a lot slower than me. Well, I need my phone.

I get a mile further and ask another gentleman. “Oh, the horses? Yeah they just went to break for lunch a bit ahead.” Finally, I’ll get my phone back. I get to the line of horses, and almost scare a few of them which would’ve ended terribly.

I finally pass about 20 horses and don’t die, and I ask the guide if he had my phone. There are two groups of horses. Are you kidding me? I’m frickin dying, hiking 3.5 miles up the canyon that bears my name. He radios the other guide, he says, “oh yeah, I picked up a phone. I gave it to the rangers at the bathroom that’s under construction.” Alright, onward (and uphill) I go!

I finally catch up to the other group of horses, maybe 2/3 of a mile ahead. Well if they’re past the bathrooms, I definitely am. So I backtrack and finally find a ranger. The bathrooms were being constructed behind a rock wall and weren’t easily visible at all, especially when you’re a dude who is trying to trail run 4 miles at 8,000 feet for the first time.

He says no, haven’t seen it but I’ll keep an eye out. Another ranger comes around the corner and says, “what kind of phone is it?”
Well... a black iPhone. Not exactly the most specific thing. So she asks me what the wallpaper is. Shit.

My wallpaper is a post it note from the surf shop one of the other employees wrote telling me to shut the .. up and eat a Richard. They all got a laugh out of that.

I’m a firm believer in stoicism. It’s what helped me maintain my composure destroying my back window in the middle of the Ozarks, it’s what allowed me to think critically and backtrack to find my phone. And my belief was further reinforced that day.

I became a bit of a celebrity on the trail, everyone I passed asked if I found my phone. I eventually started chatting with this one guy, Aaron, who originally was near me when I realized I lost it. Eventually I realize we’re doing similar hikes, and I simply do his route instead. As we continue, we meet another guy, Scott, and now I’m hiking with two random (but super cool) people all because I lost my phone. It’s crazy how things work out.
    BEEBF63F-063F-4EAB-BBB4-F7493B896DCA.jpg

Eventually we finish our hike. Aaron (middle) is inbetween jobs and living out of motels and rental cars for a few months as he applies and interviews for a new job.

Scott is 48, has two kids in college, and a wife back home in Jersey. He’s living out of his Subaru Outback until late June. He’s going from Jersey>Southwest>Northwest>Denali>JerseyIt’s not often you see someone with a family like that who still hits the road and whose family is okay, or even encourages them to do it. He had an impressive story. He did one year for engineering in school and quit. Then he played tennis professionally for a bit before landing a marketing gig at a tennis club. Eventually started and owned a graphic design company with 35 employees. And as the story always goes, he’s now taking time to see this country.
Perhaps I’ll meet up with him later, our timing and schedules should line up decently close.

After Bryce Canyon, I was defeated. I did 7 miles, but literally all of it was uphill. I slept like a baby. Maybe partially because of where I spent the night...

Yeah, one of the most incredible places I’ve slept. I had no idea landscapes like this existed in southern Utah. But alas, it was Tuesday night. So I would only spend one day there. I wanted that free solar panel.

I was still 2hr30 out from SLC, so I hit the road at 8 or so. Showered at a gym south of the city, went to Starbucks to edit some photos, and hit Walmart. I met Drew a few hours later and got the panel. A 100w Jackery. Well, everything really does work out I guess. Now I have to get a battery setup/jackery/goal zero to go along with it.
    image.jpg

Thankfully it has a USB port so I can charge stuff in the meantime.

I think one of the greatest things I’ve learned from this little adventure is to help people as much as you can. From family friends, to friends from the shop, to random people I’ve met on the road. People have helped me in so many ways. Whether mentally, by helping me not be overwhelmed or helping me plan, by buying my art, or by giving me a 100w panel for free. No deed has gone unnoticed. For me, with my limited knowledge, funds, and experienced, I can’t give back much. But when I passed someone in New Mexico who needed water, yeah I backed up and gave him and his dog a few bottles. It might not seem like much, but that’s the most I could do to help him in that moment. And in the future, I’ll look back at everyone whose helped me and then pass it on. Maybe it’s water, maybe it’s some info on a park, maybe it’s explaining how to shower and stay clean, maybe it’s money. I don’t know. But I’m so thankful for everyone whose helped me.

So for now, I’m just hunkering down for the weekend again. I think up next I’ll hit the PNW and see what’s up.

    On the way!

On Saturday, I headed towards Twin Falls Idaho!
I spent Saturday night just outside town on BLM land. I was blessed with snow! This was the most snowfall I’ve ever seen! In Charleston, it’s snowed a handful of times but something about being up north made it special. I spent the morning watching it.
    75AA37F3-7AF8-4118-924C-05BDE5A40F55.jpg
    B25917AB-8D6D-47BF-B3F7-B7446A28B65F.jpg

On the way down the trail, I experienced some real Idaho Mud. It rivals Georgia Clay. I had practically no control. The rear end went whichever way it decided, and there were some large rocks I was trying to avoid. Thankfully I made it, but it was incredibly slick. I don’t think I’d have made it uphill.

From there, I headed to Shoshone Falls. Absolutely incredible. They call it “The Niagra of The West,” though it has practically zero commercial development. The fee was $5, highly worth it!
    DA98A17C-1A17-4EA7-90D7-59CEBAF73242.jpg

After that, I headed into the Sawtooths! Forecast was for rain and snow until Wednesday. Unfortunately it looks like that’s accurate. So until then, I’ll have no choice but to soak in some hot springs. They are insane! People have built pits where you can control inflow of river and spring water to set whatever temp you’d like. No cell service, no worries, just springs, random passerby’s, and the mountains.
    EB09142F-5EC9-4A50-8521-8DD54F2AD212.jpg

That’s basically how I spent all day yesterday. And how I will probably spend today. I don’t have any pics of me in the springs themselves, I take that time to disconnect and think. I don’t get to disconnect often, I need internet for editing and uploading photography, as well as staying in contact with family and friends.

I would like to get to the point by the end of this trip to go 2-3 days offline. With only my Garmin to communicate. I think this region will be the place. So much do to and see and experience.

    ————

Unfortunately, at some point over the past week, I lost my bag containing all my shorts/bathing suits. I found this out when I was about to get in the water. I tore my truck apart, everything came out onto the road. I can’t find them. The only place I could’ve lost them would be on the side of the highway, when I open the door for some privacy. But I think I would’ve seen them. I definitely didn’t leave them at a laundromat, I haven’t been to one since Moab.

One of the perks of working at a surf shop, they’ll be sending me some shorts and bathing suits. I’m pretty butthurt though, I had some sick new designs that are now toast. Oh well. For now, that just means I have to figure out how to get mail in the middle of Idaho.. we’ll see how that goes. Could be worse.

so far I’ve lost a pair of hiking socks at Arches, a hubcap in Telluride, a D ring in Arizona, and all my summer bottoms somewhere between Utah/Idaho. I think I’ve been pretty blessed with minimal casualties so far. Let’s hope it stays that way.

According to my Garmin, I’m over 7,400 miles in. I can’t believe I’ve made it this far. Originally, I planned for one month. Now it’s been 6 weeks. Maybe I’ll head home sometime in mid-late June.

I still have to hit OR/WA, which is later this week. If y’all have any tips or things I should see in OR/W/ID/MT/WY/SD please let me know!

For now, I’ll stay around Stanley ID for a bit and enjoy myself. (sunset is from south of twin falls ID)

And as always, the best way to support me is to by some art! Even a small print, that money will go directly to gas and food. brycercampbell.com

I’ll update when I leave Stanley, probably a day or two!

That is awesome! If you're gonna visit Southwest again, I recommend checking out Tombstone, AZ. It may be a bit hot in June, but it's up to you.

Right, I forgot. I grew up in NJ, so I know all about heat and humidity lol. I've been up and down east coast, many times. Used to drive down to FL twice a year.

As I sit in John Day, Oregon, eating disgusting (fantastic) greasy pizza which I haven’t tasted for almost two months, I figure I should probably post again. It’s a struggle finding good cell service out here.

Last post I just arrived in Stanley. I stayed there until Thursday morning.
Wednesday I did the most famous Sawtooth hike, via Iron Creek, to Sawtooth and Alpine lake. Strangely enough, I met a couple from North Carolina. We end up hiking the rest of the way together, though we only made it to Alpine Lake. A Canadian guy said he did make it all the way up to Sawtooth lake, but us Carolinians were probably way out of our element. I was satisfied with how far I got. Still some waist deep snow in some spots, we were some of the first people of the season to make it to the lake.

After that hike, I was soaked (and chilled), I headed to the hotsprings (and the tiny grocery store, Stanley has a permanent population of 62.)
Stanley has a few springs, Boat Box is perhaps the most famous. Though it is tiny and often full, I had it to myself for a while!
    A989AA77-BCCB-4E43-BBE2-9AF947584200.jpg

After that, I headed back to camp for the night. I planned on heading to Boise in the morning and hitting as many hotsprings as I could along the way. Well, it didn’t go to plan.

My first stop was incredible and I spent a while there. This spring was a bit of a drive down a pretty bumpy road, which means I had it all to myself.
    06E928D5-5B8A-4A88-8EA9-457FC515C087.jpg

From there, I headed to Boise to grab the clothes the shop sent me. I showered, hit Walmart, and headed off to Oregon where so have been for 3 days now. Not much has happened yet so I’ll probably save that for another post. For now, I’m hunkering down through the Memorial Day crowd.

Actually, I’ll just update to now so I don’t forget.
After Boise, I had no plan. I still don’t, honestly. I was driving down the highway and saw these rolling green hills, and OnX said it’s BLM land, so why not. I only have pics of the hills on my camera, but the sunset was incredible.

I’m still not sure how much I want to see in Oregon. The goal is to end up in the. Cascades, and then head to Glacier. From there, Tetons. But I’m getting ahead of myself. Basically, it will cost too much for me to get to the coast. The furthest I’m willing to go is Bend, and so that’s where I’m probably heading next. I’ll only do a hike or two, then make my way to Washington and the Cascades. I am not low on funds quite yet, but I’m not going to rush getting to Charleston so I want to have a good amount of money leftover before I leave Wyoming so a I can do whatever I want.

From my first night in Oregon (really just on the Idaho border), I headed west. The original plan was to find somewhere and settle for the weekend. Obviously that did not go to plan, for a few reasons. 1. The cell service where I was staying was terrible. Not normally a problem, but I’m stuck there for 4-5 days so... yeah. 2. There wasn’t much to see. It was a nearly dried up lake and a pine forest. There’s a ton of those back home. If one of those 2 was different, I’d probably have stayed there.
    7F346590-8EEA-4718-88C4-ECFBA86CB708.jpg

That was last night. This morning, I did a hike (more like the only hike) nearby. It was to an incredible alpine lake. 10 miles maybe, a few thousand feet. Took me 5 or so hours including a long time sitting and staring.

Now I’m here, eating really disgusting pizza. I wouldn’t have it any other way tho. I’m going to head out to find camp for tonight (and probably til Monday), and I’ll update when something else happens. Talk to y’all soon.

    Thanks, me too :D
    It’s been quite the adventure!

And just re-reading the thread, a small side-note so I remember the details in the future.
When I was in Oklahoma with the broken back window at the state park, every time I opened or closed the door, the plastic would expand and contract and made the loudest noise ever. Everyone stared at me every time I opened or closed a door. Fun times.
Also at the park, the lake is man made and behind a dam. The dam siren went off at like 6am and everyone was trying to figure out what was happening. No one moved, so I figured Atleast we’ll all go down together. Campground camaraderie. Apparently they just test the flood siren...at 6am.

Alrighty, let’s see. Where was I?

After that pizza, I knew I wanted to head west - but that’s all I knew. I made it to some BLM land outside Redmond OR, and luckily right next to a canal. I didn’t know Oregon was mostly desert, so the water was a welcome sight. It also got pretty toasty the next few days (I stayed for 2 nights), so that helped cool it down a bit.
    0F9FFF05-5087-4929-B4C9-0FCCDE4E70B4.jpg

So when I left, which would’ve been Tuesday, I believe, I headed into Redmond. Showered, tightened up the exhaust flange at an Oreillys because I never put locktite on when I straight piped it, and went to Walmart.
A quick note about showering. Originally, and for maybe the first two weeks, I did stick to my plan to shower every other day. And then I didn’t. I think I probably average a shower every 4-5 days. Inbetween, baby wipe baths and hotsprings/rivers. I don’t smell that bad...I think.

when I left Redmond, I headed to Sahalie Falls. I knew I was going to do Blue Pool, but it was already after noon and toasty, so I wasted time for the rest of the day. Maybe wasted is the wrong term, because it was absolutely gorgeous.

From there, I went and found somewhere close to camp. The plan was to hit Blue Pool for the sunrise.

No one warned me about the mosquitos in the PNW. Or the flying ants. Not something I was expecting. We have flying roaches back home, but something about a flying ant is quite off putting. I had to cover head to toe. Buff/hat//long sleeve/boots/gloves because I was getting bitten by mosquitos everywhere.

but after all that, I did wake up and hike to Blue Pool. I jumped in and it was freezing. Maybe 45ish degrees?
    EDCC8A08-2F28-4C51-80D4-18EE7AD15907.jpg

From there, I went up north to Mt Rainier for the night. I had probably the greatest view of anyone in 150 miles.

    Polar plunge :D

Quick update: I have a mouse in my truck. I’m a few hours east of Spokane, camping here the last two days. When I got here, I left all the doors open while I was setting up camp. I also had the hood and air filters out (cleaned them and they were drying)

He’s been eating stuff for a few days. I set traps the morning after I found out. Haven’t gotten him yet. Just set glue traps and peanut butter. I’ve got all my stuff outside on a table and the tailgate until I get him caught. I feel violated and disgusted. He shit in my seat, he chewed the center console. I hope he doesn’t die behind the dashboard.

Sure hope it leaves your wiring alone. Hope to hear you find it dead.

Me too. I don’t think he’s behind the dashboard, but we’ll see. M

Alright, I’m at the laundromat washing all the rat piss off my clothes so here’s an update. The part about the rat is gonna be kinda gruesome, heads up.

At Mt. Rainier, everything was snowed over. Like 20ft of snow. Everyone had skis/snowshoes, me being a dumb Charlestonian, I don’t even have spikes. It was still worth seeing, the history of tourism there and the drive was very scenic.

After that, it was still early, so I headed towards the Cascades. I was planning on camping at a trailhead, but an avalanche had come down a bit earlier, so no go. I still wanted to explore it, so I put Big White Truck to work.

I ended up camping further down the trail where, near the highway. Not as scenic, but still gorgeous.

The next morning, into the Cascades.

and of course, I went for a swim. Some locals told me it was 45f. It was probably a bit colder than that.

Genuinely one of the most incredible things I’ve ever seen. This was a highlight of the trip. Again, snowed out above 4K ft. I will be back at some point, maybe in September. I want to climb along those ridges. I am kind of disappointed due to the snow. I knew that everything would be impassable when I got there, but it’s still frustrating. Only makes me want to come back sooner.

After the cascades, I went to camp outside Winthrop WA. This is where I found a mouse in my truck. The first morning, I found toilet paper, paper towels, the center console all chewed. Piss and shit everywhere. I was pissed. It’s disgusting and violating. I went into town and got some traps. He ate poison that night, I thought he’d behind the dashboard (Not good). I was lucky, he didn’t. He came out last night around 9pm when I was on FaceTime. He got stuck in a glue trap trying to get peanut butter. He was still alive, and as much as I hate the disease carrying rodent, he needed to die painlessly. I smashed his head with a rock. Pretty nasty, but better than him squirming to death. I buried him to keep the ants away (and the campsite clean).

But I did make a true homeless camp. It rivaled that of Portland’s. Who did it better?

Now I’m here. Doing laundry in Twisp, WA. From here, Glacier NP. Probably camp on the WA/ID border tonight and work my way east. I will be getting the truck deep cleaned when I get home. But for now, onwards.

Can’t blame you. It probably should’ve been on Liveleak. Not trying to get the thread nuked tho :D

I’ve been thinking about it... probably next time. My plan after this is to build a box truck to live in fulltime, so I think I’m gonna start recording then. Or maybe I’ll do a tour of my tundra setup to start. I have no problem talking to myself, I do it all the time

Thought y’all should know where I’ve been. On June 6th I had a passing in my immediate family. I have flown back home, my truck is on WA. I hope to fly back and finish Montana/WY/SD in early July. I’ll post again when I am back on the road.

Hydropower dam maybe, when they open the gates to generate they sound alarm because of the increased flow and depths.

About the box truck idea, saw an ambulance that was used I think in Yellowstone area initially, then after like two years it went to auction for dependability reasons I guess. Anyway I think it was an off-road f 550 and the buyer made a live in out of it. Pretty sweet. On YouTube somewhere.

At some point you have to move forward. Off to Glacier NP in the next two days. I am too emotionally attached to this truck to let it sit in open airport parking during 110f temps.

Safe travels brother! Keep the good attitude and common sense, you will get far in life. Even if not the wealthiest man money wise, you are already ahead of many in memories. Enjoy the campfire!!
