I’ve read other posts about some people having skid plate noise/creeking. Has anyone just removed the skid plate all together? If so, has anyone one had problems with exposing those parts of the engine over time? I don’t off-road at all, just city/country roads.

Some of the trims don’t come with the skid plate. Should be no issue. But I think you should just figure out how to stop squeak. You have a TRD Pro and one of the things that makes it the pro is the nice skid plate that comes with it.

I don’t want to but it’s an obnoxious metal shifting on metal noise. I’ve had 2 local Toyota dealerships try to remedy it but the noise is silenced only for a short time.

And you said it had been making that noise since you bought it. It really sounded like something loose in the suspension. But all it is is the bully dog adapter to the fender well. Just a little slop. It was funny, it was the first thing I checked under the hood. Like I was drawn to it.

Thank you bobeast. That’s the concept I had envisioned-some type of rubber membrane. Gonna give it a shot. Appreciate the suggestion.

I took my truck to get an oil change and the idiot guy doing it was starting to take out the skid plate bolts. Luckily I was watching him and told him there's an access panel for that. He put the bolts back without torquing them. I was pissed. Which reminds me, I gotta retorque them back to specs.

My 2020 has the TRD skid plate had this same creaking noise which drove me nuts. I bought a cheap rear seat truck floor mat from SAMS Club and cut out to the shape of the skid plate that attaches to the rear frame brace and placed it between the plate and frame. Made notches for the two bolts, tightened it down and no more noise.
Does anybody know if you can upload video clips on this sight?

I have a 2018 Tundra Limited with the TRD package. So that means I PAID for that skid plate in my TRD package and it was installed by Toyota.
I have had the dealer install the "fix" for the creaking, popping noise that was happening after 1.5 years of owning this truck. THAT fix made the noises way worse! I have a good relationship with my dealership service department...I am willing to work with them as they are with me. But after the "fix" was applied (which is basically new shims and a spacer and some other bolts) the noises were amplified and drive me absolutely nuts. The service advisor said that if that did not fix it then the only other alternative is to remove the skid plate. Uh, excuse me, but I paid extra for that and if that were the fix for things then we would all be driving around on partially disassembled vehicles. The problem is the design of the plate itself. They put in a small trap door for access to the oil filter during oil changes. The issue is that the trap door is NOT big enough and NOT aligned properly with the oil filter...so when they do an oil change, they said the oil goes all over the inside of the skid plate. So here's my thought Toyota...recall the damn plates and reengineer them so that they don't have to pull them off and on every time they change the freakin' oil. Move the trap door that you so cleverly thought of so that it does what you intended it to do. Every time they pull that plate off and put it back on it requires specific torque setting for each bolt...yes, there are different torque settings for different bolts! Most of the oil changing guys are not going to sit there and torque the bolts down to spec, they are going to ram those bolts up with the same air wrench they use to remove and reapply your lug nuts. How do I know this? Because I checked the bolts when I got home after an oil change...NONE of them were right. But even if they do it right, the damn thing still creaks and pops and makes you think your front end is gonna fall apart. Not a good selling point on a $59,000 truck Toyota! This issue has nothing to do with you driving on or off road. Some people have said to just remove the skid plate because they don't go off road anyways. Well I am here to tell you that I was driving at night in my 2014 Tundra SR5 without a skid plate and hit a large rock that was invisible even as I passed over it...that rock jumped up and hit the oil pan and poked a hole in it as well as did damages to various other items. So a skid plate is more that an "off road" accessory, it is essential to driving on even the best of highways. Don't put the customer in the middle of this Toyota...do the right thing or this will be the last Toyota truck I buy.

I'm with you on this. Damn skid plate is driving me absolutely bonkers!!! So fed up with it I'm ready to trade the truck for something else already. I go in for my 20k service this week and will have them "Fix" it AGAIN! Last time they did it only lasted a day before it went back to creaking and popping

So it's fixed!! My dealership took it back in for the 3rd try...this time the senor tech and the master tech tried something "not in the playbook" of Toyota. They added shims (washers) on both the top and bottom of the mounting holes...and then correctly tightened the bolts down in the correct order at the correct foot pounds of torque. Here the rub, Everytime I go in for an oil change they have to redo this in the exact same way...if they don't then creaky squeaky will come back. It's a crap design...I am already looking for a good aftermarket replacement that has the access panel in the right spot...then no need to remove the plate each time the oil gets changed.
But yeah... It's not making ANY noises at all. I still owe those guys a 12 pack!
    Cheers!!

Shouldn't be that hard of a fix. Get some weather stripping around the contact points to the frame and most importantly, torque the hardware to the correct spec. This will fix it. If you want to be extra sure, remove the middle block from the jack point. No way you will hear a peek after all this. This worked for me no problem.

Did you use a harder or softer rubber washer? Also, did you tighten back to torque specs? I'm probably going to do the same.

Signed up to post this reply. Thanks for all the info. Hated the noise, loosened the two rear bolts, added some rubber from a bike tire tube, tightened the bolts, bam, no more noise. Going to order new nuts and bolts since they are crimped locknuts and do it over again with fresh hardware properly torqued. Can’t believe I lived with that for this long with such an easy fix.

Hey guys. I’m battling same issue on a 2021 Pro. So frustrating. My suspension shop tightened things down (perhaps not to the nut-specific specs) and it stopped for a few weeks, but back after some offroad and beach driving. I expect my dealership to look at it this week and I’ve provided them the “tech tip” reference. But it would be super helpful if any of you who have solved the noise with rubber or other shims/padding could post some picks of the specific fix. Sounds like the trick is the rear bolts where the tip sheet indicated new lock nuts are required at each removal. Thanks!

Just wanted to offer a follow-up. I purchased a more beefy torque wrench and, surprise surprise, discovered that the “D” bolts fastening the rear of my skid to the frame were not torqued down at the factory to anywhere close to spec. I bet I gave them 5+ full turns if not more to hit 43 pound feet. No more popping. Fingers crossed.
