All the Toyota Press Room has up currently is release notes updated today re: the Tacoma.
1 hr to go but I’m thinking that in light of the Taco bulletins that there won’t be a Tundra announcement today but I could and hope to be wrong.

I'll admit to not having read any details on it but how is the Corolla Cross different from a Rav4?

I watched just about every segment of the presentation yesterday, and I can barely tell the difference between the Corolla Cross and Rav4. It's more obfuscation for the dealer lots and bloat/padding of Toyota's small crossover offerings, similar to what any other manufacturer is doing thanks to the CAFE loopholes.

I wanted a faster vehicle so I also bought a Chevy SS... because 4 door sedans with big V8’s are hilarious.
Yeah another bland penalty box crossover from Toyota. Yeah it will be reliable, but at this point Toyota already has that covered.

So why do we need another underpowered, boring to drive, small crossover with a Toyota badge?

Every vehicle covered in that press event was a total waste of time. I really wonder if Toyota is still in business to make money, because that product reveal leaves me wondering.

Just like they skipped the 95 model year, maybe the 2022 tundra will be skipped due to lack of parts

Unfortunately those cars make them the money. The boring cars bring the revenue stream for the fun stuff to exist. So with that said I guess i support the boring stuff. Kinda ironic

Not really. The profit margins on small cars and crossovers is not nearly as generous per unit as larger SUV’s and trucks. Which is pretty much a universal condition throughout the auto industry.

Happy meal for Toyota that their production is not as badly affected by the automotive chip shortage right now, but if they wanted to maximize profits for Toyota NA they’d focus production on larger vehicles. I know domestic manufacturers are doing that right now.

Based on what I’ve seen by peeking in the auto rack cars on freight trains I have had this year it’s mostly trucks and SUV’s shipping from domestic manufacturers. The chips they can get are going to high margin vehicles. Taking a look at a few dealer lots and there are a few trucks and mid size to large SUV’s and that is pretty much it. No small cars, no small crossovers. They cannot afford to make new cars for peasants right now.

I think globally they sell a hell of a lot more cars and crossovers than trucks and SUVs.

I strongly doubt it. Toyota is one of the manufacturers who has been hit the least on shortages. Even the manufacturers that have been hit the hardest are not completely shutting down highly profitable vehicles. If anything, they would slow down production on things like Corolla, Prius, and other low-margin small cars in international markets, before skipping out on full-size trucks and SUVs.

You wouldn’t know it based on dealer inventory levels. Local Toyota dealer has no inventory at all aside from a handful of cars. No trucks at all.

There will effectively be no 2022 model year for the Tundra at this rate, and 2021 looks like it won’t have much of a model year either.

If you look at the sales figures, they are virtually the same as in prior years. They are making roughly the same number of trucks but they are just clearing the dealer lots faster.

I’m no expert but the Cross seems to be a little smaller, cheaper, and less powerful. More like the RAV4 when it was first introduced, before it grew over time. I am a tall driver, have issues with headroom and getting in/out of low vehicles, so appreciate “cars” with a taller stance. If I fit inside, I could see liking a Corolla Cross especially in an EV for short trip local runabout driving, keeping the Tundra for towing and longer trips. I already borrow my wife’s EV often for quick trips in town that aren’t long enough to warm the Tundra to temp.

I use my wife's Corolla for in short trips in town now. When we eventually replace it, I'm hoping for a Corolla hatchback hybrid with a real automatic transmission (though I suspect I'll have to decide if I can live with a CVT).

That’s because the vehicles being manufactured are already sold before they reach the dealer. Buyers come pick them up once off the truck and prepped so they don’t go to the regular lot.
