I have a 2020 Crewmax Limited. Like all I love the truck and it’s my fourth Tundra but I feel like the brakes are less than impressive. More specifically, it seems to require more pedal pressure than I would expect. Does anyone else feel this way? Are others going to cross drilled rotors and better pads?

Truck has usual mods: Bilstein 5100, 285/70/18 and I do tow a small single axle enclosed snowmobile trailer.

I installed EBC stage 5 kit front and back along with full SS brake lines. To me brakes are night and day difference. Also the slotted and dimpled rotors do make a slight sound at low speeds. Its not a bad sound per say but sounds kinda like a cat purring/chuffing.

Heads up if you do all 6 SS lines. One of the back axle lines (passenger if I recall correctly) has a slightly different shape where the locking clip goes. I used a step bit to open the mount hole enough once I figured this out.

I had these on my 03 4Runner with the v8 that would warp rotors constantly. I think the rotors were too small on the SR5. They were the best brakes I've had on any vehicle. Slotted/dimples rotors with the ceramic pads is perfect. And made here in the US with a lifetime warranty.

The Tundra brake pedals are pretty hard without much travel. However, if it senses you in a panic stop it will boost the brakes and the pedal will suddenly travel quite a bit and those things will really clamp down. It will feel and sound like the antilock is kicking in while doing so.

Following this thread because my '18 is at 48k and due for new brakes.

Tire Rack has good prices on them.

@Djone27 is correct my Hawks kind of purr at slow speeds.
    They stop very well.
I’ll upgrade to stainless lines eventually. Guess I should start looking for American made lines.

I put EBC orange on my moms GX460. So far it’s much better than stock. Before it had the stopping distance of a bus.

Any more reviews on the brakeperformance.com setup? Looks like a good price and good equipment.

I too want to avoid heavy dust. I don’t feel like I need sports car brakes but a little better would be worth the investment over OEM.

If you feel the need, I would do the pads and lines first before popping for the rotors.
On my 2000 Trans Am WS6, I went slotted rotors and pads for an improvement but, the real kicker was when I installed braided SS Teflon brake lines.
Then the stopping power was superb.

It makes sense that braided lines would be the biggest bang for the buck.

maybe I’ll do lines first to see the incremental changes

    Some like...stuff and things.
I've done slotted rotors, good pads, and stainless lines on my last 2 supercharged vehicles. Brakes are definitely the next needed upgrade on the Tundra and I'm glad to see someone makes SS lines for these things. Those are hands down the best part of the entire brake upgrade package.

EBC Extra Duty Truck (Orange) pads are good upgrades. ED91815 and ED91816. Autoplicity.com has better pricing than most. It will end up around $300 for both sets.

Another option is to check rockauto for semi-metallic brake pads. They typically have better bite, especially when cold. Upside is cheap pricing, but downside is dusty wheels.

Sometime ago, there used to be a device that guys used to clamp around the master cylinder / power booster that was bolted together.
The theory around this and it worked almost too good is that GM designed the brake system with the vacuum booster deflecting a certain amount when activated.
This was designed in "play" for lack of a better description.
What this device did and I almost bought it for my WS6 was limit the deflection of the booster to a specific user defined amount via a large set screw that preloaded the booster.
I drove a Camaro that had this clamp on it and was amazed at the stopping power.
He had everything else stock but was as good or better than my full on setup with my WS6.
I wish I could remember its name as this guy also told me you could destroy your power assist unit if you pre loaded too much.
Maybe it's not made anymore but it worked and was simple and very effective.

+1 for this setup, I did the same thing @Hightide is recommending (except for the upgraded brake lines) a few weeks ago after getting my lift/35s on, it stops like a dream! When I had the shop mount my wheels/tires the tech advised I had about 4% of my pads left, I asked how much they charged to replace just for kicks and they quoted over $1k, and that wasn't using any special upgraded parts. So I did it myself very easily, got the rotors from tire rack during a sale and the EBC pads from buybrakes.com. I'll do brake lines later down the line.

This was big in the Honda/tuner world. Master cylinder brace. Bolts to the shock tower and braces the master to prevent firewall flex under heavy braking.

Interesting to hear that the Tundra braking is sub-par from the factory. Some good info in here.

They’re more like HD truck or “tow” pads. Just a really strong initial bite meant for oversized tires. Their race pads are the yellow and blue I think. As far as dust I’m not sure yet. The GX doesn’t even see 1000 miles a year. But on my LS I’ve got EBC red and they are very dusty, but advertised as low dust.

Edit - The stock pads on the GX felt like driving around with full time brake fade.

For those considering SS lines, the Tundra has 6 flex lines (1 at each wheel and 2 over the center of the rear axle). 5 of them have the same shape where they mount (diamond shaped hexagon). The 6th one (passenger axle line) has a different shape, its more oval without the sharp lines the others have. The Power Stop kit I ordered did not have any lines with this particular shape. I used a step bit to open the hole so the new SS line would fit.

I’m with ya! Especially when hauling, I love my tundra way more than my 08 Silverado but it did seem to stop better, and it had rear drums. I guess the tundra as a lot heavier?
