I have checked the specs via VIN on Toyota’s website. No mention of gas tank at all, so I assumed it was the standard 28 gallon.
But twice now I’ve filled up to 31 gallons. Is that a normal amount of variation for a 28 gal tank? Both times were at Costco, so I doubt it’s a sketchy pump that’s fudging the numbers.

    thoughts?

Thanks. I saw all of the threads discussing the calibration and reserve. I assumed that was for aftermarket 38 gal tanks.

Is there any way to test or verify? When I look up the brochure for my year model, I can’t seem to locate anything that says 38 gal tank comes on the trd offroad.

The 38g tank is not an after market addition. It’s standard for many models and years. The only other standard tank is the 28g one, which you obviously don’t have. Use the search function for “fuel tank”, there has been quite a few threads

Thanks. I was just confused because I expected the spec sheet to show the tank. I guess it doesn’t show that as an option. Lucky me.

Yeah I know you’re right regarding the 38 gal tank. I was saying I thought all of the threads about the mis-calibration of the digital gauge related to the aftermarket upgrade to the 38 gal.

It’s so weird the the digital gauge is telling me 0 miles remaining when I have 6+ gallons. I’ll search the other threads and see what you geniuses have come up with for this one.

The 2nd Gen were 26 gal and filled up full at 20-21 gal after showing 0 on range and E. There is a 5 gal reserve. The newer model I currently have 2018 with TRD off road package is a 38 gal and same thing if I run bone dry on range below E it’s 32 gal to fill up the 38 gal tank. So there’s a 6 gal reserve. I’m assuming Toyota did this to keep fuel pump submerged.

Says right there under options, SR5 Upgrade Package includes the 38 gallon tank, then in your spec sheet it shows you have the SR5 Upgrade Package, so thusly, you have the 38 gallon tank. There is a big reserve in these tanks, so 31-32 gallons is about what you'll be putting in if you run to 0 miles on the range.

What OnespeedTRD said, it's a part of the SR5 Upgrade package. That's what gives you the larger fuel tank and bucket sets with a center console, among a couple other things.

Yep, you gotta 38 gallon tank. Just for reference, I just recently ran mine down to 0 miles on the range and filled up with 32.6 gallons.

I think I understand OP's 2nd question a little better. Yes it's obvious you have the 38 gallon tank, but that the spec sheet doesn't list it is interesting. Sounds like the 2016 MY had different standard fuel tank sizes based on trims, so it wasn't an "option".

In the case of my 2020, I needed to get the SR5 upgrade package to get the 38 gal tank, and that's specifically listed on the Monroney.

My understanding is 2016 and newer with a 5 seat configuration have a 38 gallon tank and 6 seat configurations have a 28 gallon tank.

Thank you! Feel like there was a whole lot of “OP doesn’t know how to use the search function” going on.

In the brochure sheet it’s listed as an option. Yet on the options page of my spec sheet it isn’t listed.
The brochure says you need the SR5 Upgrade to add the 38 gal tank (144 liters lol). That doesn’t mean that by getting the SR5 Upgrade you definitely get the 38 gal tank. But in reality, I guess it does mean that.

Read your packages. It’s clearly states 38gal tank in the details of packages. I’ve been at 1/4 tank and only gotten 27 gal in mine. With 130ish miles til empty. I haven’t ran it down to empty and filled yet

I mean we are going to get into proofs soon, but it’s nbd. By saying I must have the SR5 Upgrade to get the 38 gal tank, that does not imply that you get the 38 gal tank with the SR5 Upgrade. It means that if I do the SR5 Upgrade, I have the option to also add the 38 gal tank.

Nope! You may be looking at the snip from the brochure. The snip from my spec sheet does not list the option. Nor does anything on my spec sheet.

You don’t understand. By having that package installed, that size tank is included as part of that package. So yes if you have that SR5 package you have the 38 gallon tank. And what does your window sticker say? It will be listed there also as one of the features of that package.

The packages are not a la carte. The SR5 Upgrade Package includes the big tank. If you have it you have it all. Having the upgrade package doesn’t open up another list of options, it’s all included. I suppose you could try to do a special order and ask them to put the smaller tank on a truck with the bucket seats, or install a bench seat instead, but I doubt anyone would do that, and not even sure Toyota would entertain that.

I understand that you’re correct. I’m just saying that the language in the brochure doesn’t support that statement.
I don’t have the window sticker. The snip above is from Toyota’s vin decoder site.

The way the packages were set up in '16 (and newer I assume) if it has a column shifter it always got a 26 gal, and if it has a floor shifter it got the 38 gal. No exceptions afaik
