I kept the JBL for highs and mids. I then ran 2 10in Rockford fosgate 10s in a sealed box behind the seat.
I have had great systems, each running multiple amps, in the past in all my former vehicles. I have to say that despite what Toyota calls a subwoofer (it sucks), the high end with 440 watts running the high end is decent enough for me to enjoy. The woofers sure add a lot of realism to the. Music too.

Not sure I saw a response to this?
Can I use the Subwoofer leads at the rear box to obtain a signal for a line out converter?

TRD rear sway bar, console organizer, stubby antenna, LEDs for cabin, cargo, license plate, and reverse lights, power-fold mirrors, Westin nerf bars, full stereo upgrade. Future - color-match grill surround/bulge, mirror caps, handles, plasti-dip badges.
You can, but you're not going to get a great signal. All you will be doing is boosting the existing sub signal, which is pretty weak. Yes you will get more bass out of it since you'll have the ability to turn it up louder, but you'll only be getting the frequencies that the JBL amp sends out, which is not very good. People have done it and they've gotten better results than stock, but you won't be getting the full advantage of the aftermarket amp/sub.

I just want to add another amp and sub using a line out converter. Can I just tie into the rear speaker wires and 30 amp red wire for remote power? I will run power wire from the battery as well. learnem, what did you do exactly?

Nice so the https://www.autoharnesshouse.com/41112.html adapters will work with the JBL amp? This is exactly what I was looking for. I bought a audio Control 6.1 channel amp with build in DPS and its fully programable Via BT or USB Connection.

Platinum tundra, yeah, it sounds right, but barely better reg non entune tundra. Get a single box and subwoofer, make sure they can fit behind the back seat, you'll need an 8 socket to remove/replace the seat
My crew has 4 to 4.5" to play with from the back wall to the back of the back seat
Make sure your subwoofer you buy can handle the power you want to push. Amp can be mounted under either back seat with plenty of room. To spare

Has anyone done this with pictures yet? I have a cerwin vega VPAS 10, powered sub that I had in mt 4 runner that I would like to add to the existing JBL system. The powered sub has high level input so I should be able to just tap the speaker wire @ the sub or rear speakers and run it over to the high level in to my powered sub. Only issue I would be looking at is finding a remote wire to tap into for the amp.. Here is what I had under the passenger seat in my 4 runner. It adds more than enough good sounding bass. Im not a teenager that needs to wake the neighborhood but the stock JBL sub is pathetic. Even with the fader all the way to the rear and volume/bass maxed you can barely tell it is on.

Lou, are the battery power wires on the j142 connectors always on or do they only supply power when the truck is on?

For what it’s worth I got the harnesses listed in the OP and did the install about a month ago zero issues. For some reason not as loud as when it was in the 4 runner but that could just be a perception issue as it was under the front passenger seat in the 4 runner and is now behind the rear seat next to the factory sub but overall a huge step up from the shitty 8” sub.

Yeah, I used the 12 pin for my high level inputs to my amp. The plug and play harness looks like this when done. The speaker wire connects to the high level input on my amp or could go to a line out converter if you need to use RCA inputs. But it is completely plug and play and can go back to stock in about 5 minutes. One end plugs in to amp and the factory harness plugs into the other end the wiring diagram in the OP is spot on.

I have found that if you’re playing back music recorded at 128 bits the volume is very poor, but if you play back music recorded at higher bit rates the volume is much improved. It’s possible that the system is protecting itself when fidelity of the source is poor and playing louder would cause harmful distortion to the speakers. I suggest trying an HD music service or ripping your library at a higher bit rate to see if that improves your volume performance.

Couldn't agree more. Shameful indeed. I just upgraded from an 05 to a 15. Not only is the volume crap the sound quality leaves a lot to be desired as well. Have to turn it up to 4o's to get decent sound but then it's so distorted I almost want the 05 back. Any recommendations on new upgrades?

Thanks for this thread. Below are little more detailed pictures of the modified harnesses for anybody trying to use the speaker inputs from the JBL amp. You can order the two plugs here for $18 prime shipped: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01BSEGCQW?ie=UTF8

NOTE they are marked non-JBL as the pinouts do not match. However I found that only one wire (RL- I believe) technically needed to be added as its missing in the non-JBL, but I decided to repin the plugs so that the proper speaker color coding was maintained for future troubleshooting. If you leave it as they come you'll have yellow and red used as speaker wires.

Note you only need 8 wires (+/- for the 4 door speakers) for most installs unless you plan to power the center/dash speakers, so I left the wires out I didn't need. Hope this helps:

This thread needs to be sticky'ed for those unfortunate souls that have scoured the internet for an aftermarket JBL solution. Ordered the adapter harness suggested, the pinout pictures, all x100. Finally found a solution to bypassing the JBL amp and not having to resort to low level inputs for an aftermarket amp.

Cant thank you enough for taking the time.

Hi everyone I have a question and it might be a noob one but here it goes. I have a 2020 limited crew cab with jbl premium. I’ve upgraded the sub to the JL Audio stealth box with 2-10 inch woofers behind slither seat with a one channel 1,000 watt jl amp. I would like to upgrade door speakers and was wondering if I can just get a wiring adapter and just plug them into the factory jbl amp that came with the truck. I’ve been reading a lot on the forums but I don’t know anything about wiringstereos or anything with car audio. Anyinformation would help. Thanks inadvance

If you are simply upgrading the speakers, you can connect them to the same wires going to your existing factory speakers. There's nothing you need to do with the amp in this case. Depending on the speakers you get, you may need mounting adapters, but that's it. Check out crutchfield.com for a lot of good info on what will fit in your truck and what won't.

I’m not an audio guy - I can’t keep up after halfway through page 1.

What do I need to get to install a better amp on my otherwise stock 2020 Platinum Crewmax?

hi, I'm new here, but I figured out a bunch of stuff on my 2018 platinum crewmax. to answer your question, it depends which route you want to go. If you have the JBL factory amp (as in theres a bunch of JBL logos in your car) which you probably do have, then your head unit and your factory amp must remain together.

your upgrade will be super easy if you decide to upgrade the head unit and remove the amp. you can add a maestro RR with an upgraded head unit to keep factory settings. you will probably get cleaner sounds this way. OR you can buy one of the sound processors. it lets you keep the factory head unit and remove the factory amp. its called a DSR1 sound processor for the tundra, but its 400 bucks. obviously if you don't have the JBL system then the upgrade will be cake without all the extra stuff.

if you want to save some money, keep the head unit and factory amp, add a NEW amp inline with your factory amp. this is what I did. the signal would go from:
head unit ----> factory amp ----> NEW amp ----> speakers
(basically the factory amp output that used to go to the speaker, will need to be spliced and rerouted to the new amp. then the new amp will wire into the second half of the splice you made that goes to the speaker)
they make a harness for this so you don't have to splice the factory wires. your best bet is to just contact the people at https://www.autoharnesshouse.com/41112.html and get those two harnesses for the JBL system. I did not get the harness, so I don't know the difference between the JBL harness, and non JBL harness, but the people in this thread seem to know. I just spliced mine.. you WILL need to learn to read the wire diagrams though.

I upgraded my dash speakers along with the center one. my door speakers are all upgrades with a 4 channel amp for the 4 door speakers. I have an under the seat subwoofer because I cant be bothered with making a custom box nor I wanted to spend money on a box that fit behind the chairs. its a $300 kicker. Its strong enough for me. I also found out that the front left and right doors are woofer speakers so they don't really play anything but lows. with everything balanced out by ear, it sounds better now.

Hi, im wanting to add a better quality amp to my 2018 tundra platinum with jbl system. Already has a alpine head unit installed
looking at the 8 channel amp's as mine has the built-in subs.
the difference I see is that my factory jbl amp has the three connectors vs the two listed.
do I need the 3rd or just tape it up? 20230827_183111.jpg
