I know a lot of you guys have or have had tacoma's before. This is a question I am trying to help my dad out with. He has a '17 tacoma sr5 and he got aftermarket rims (16") and they are rubbing on the front calipers. Any advice on how to remedy this? Is this common on tacos? The place is sending back his rims to get different ones (17's) just didn't want the same thing to happen to him again.

I might as well ask this...any problems with tundras rubbing brake calipers too or is it more of a taco thing

It depends on the wheels. Most aftermarket steelies and some procomp 16s don't have enough clearance on the spoke section of the wheel and require spacers to clear the caliper. He's better off trading them in and buying wheels that fit properly.

Tundras will have the same problems with most (not all) 17" wheels on the market.

Why? If you don't like his question you can just move on to the next thread.

I ran into the same thing on my dad's '10 Tacoma. Replaced his steel 17's with Mikey Thompson classic II's in 17" and even with a lesser offset (don't recall the exact offset) they still rubbed the caliper. I did 1" Spider Trax spacers to remedy the problem. If I had to do it over again I would have ordered 18" rims and a 65 sidewall.

Steelies and Mickeys generally speaking were designed for chevys. Despite the same lug pattern, the width of the calipers is larger on the Tacoma. The majority 16" wheels work on tacomas just fine. My personal preference is to buy Toyota specific hub centric wheels like @SCSPerformance so you don't have to deal with shitty lug centric balancing.
