Looking at getting a couple kayaks. They are 8.5’ long and I have the crewmax bed.

What’s the best/safest way to transport them?

Currently would only be taking them to the lake a few miles from home, but could potentially be bringing them camping when towing a rv.

I hauled (2) 12.5ft kayaks in my Tacoma for years. You'll be fine with the above

It's not rocket science, in order to keep the back free and clear for anything you are towing, that means they need to go in the bed but angled forward over the cab, perhaps with their bows resting on a headache rack and not your cab, or you would need to get something like a Thule TracRac, Yakima or other ladder rack system. I don't like the former as the boats would surely catch too much wind. I have a TracRac for SUPs, lumber, and whatnot, and like it.

I personally cringe (and then immediately change lanes, then pass) when I see people with kayaks strapped vertically to the ladders on the back of their travel trailers.

Kayaks that small you could just throw in the bed with the tailgate up. Prop them up on the tailgate, throw a ratchet strap over the top.
I do the same thing with a bed extender and 10.5ft kayaks.

i use the bed extender pictured above for my 16' canoe (locally). For 8.5', i'd probably just throw them in and go. if that looks too precarious, put the tailgate down and strap them flat. If wanting bed space and ability to tow a trailer, you might be looking towards a ladder rack of some sorts?

I carry a 12 ft kayak in my truck with 6.5’ bed. Nose against the front of the bed tailgate down. I did just buy a really cheap ladder rack ($80-ish) from northern hardware though so I put the yak up there when towing my travel trailer. I just take the rack off when not needed.

I have a leitner design forged rack in the back of my crewmax with two sets of Thule Hull-a-port cut racks to carry a 12’ kayak and three 10’ kayaks.

Ive been carrying mine in the bed. But I have a camper too and going on a trip next month and taking my kayak, 10 footer and just got another 10 footer for my wife for Mom's day. So, I am looking into building some sort of wood rack that sits in the bed and will lift the kayaks over the cab to clear the camper.

I have seen some examples from internet searches as well as youtube. Seen folks use 2x2, 2x4, PVC, all sorts of things. Even with the high prices for wood making something that will work can be much cheaper than any of the racks out there. Some are really expensive as you probably know.

If it helps maybe take a look at a few ideas here- both DIY solutions and racks for purchase in the lists. https://www.google.com/search?q=diy...j69i57j0l6.9744j0j15&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

I have used this to transport my 11' SUP. I use it with the Thule SUP Taxi cradles. It holds it very securely and works well with more than enough clearance towing a travel trailer. It secures to the bed rail system and is easy to get on and off.

I would think that it would also work well with kayaks and you can get a kayak rack that works with it.
