I hope my question makes sense so here it goes: I just purchased a 21 Tundra and noticed that when I leave my house which is all down hill for about a half mile, on occasion if feels like the truck automaticly shifts into a lower gear so I do not have to get on the brakes as much, and I do not know how that is happening. The speed I am traveling is 25-35 and I am in drive not tow/haul. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Engine breaking completely normal. If you go into the manumatic it will usually just let go...

Thank you for the quick reply Blackdemon, I am curious how it activates? Today it seemed like the truck just rolled much faster. Did not feal any engine braking.

The transmission has sensors in it that can detect the grade you're descending and it has what Toyota calls Artificial Intelligence. I can run my truck down a 6% grade in Drive with the cruise set and at somewhere between 5 and 10 mph over set speed it will down shift and engine braking will increase to slow the vehicle to set speed.

Usually it's because your on a grade and braked, it shouldn't downshift otherwise.

I've noticed that when going down a steep hill, in speeds between 25-50, if I simply coast, it won't always shift down. But if I lightly apply the brakes and then let off, the transmission will shift down. Usually enough to keep my speed constant going down hill. This is on a 2020

My previous 14 Tacoma V6 would almost always do it on it's own. No matter what I did.

Grade Braking. Don’t use tow/haul mode. To totally disable the grade braking, shift to S mode and shift to S6.

If you lightly touch the brakes on a grade it will usually downshift. It’s been a Toyota thing for as long as I can remember. I had an 06 gs300 that did it as well.

If you blip the throttle it will upshift.
