Also since you're buying 25 of each they only need 4 so you get 6 sets out of that.

I have the 1/4" Aluminum Plates installed on my 2wd. I still think someone is going to try to cut out the rear cats since they can be accessed on a 2wd. That said, a couple weeks ago, a scumbag made an attempt at taking the cat from my wife's Honda Element that was parked in the street. Curious as to why the car sounded like it had an exhaust leak all of a sudden, I get under there an see a clear cut about through 1/5 of the pipe. Unsure why they bailed but I have to think they skipped my truck, in the driveway, because of the plates.

Hey Mesa, When you get it figured out with MoonRock and see what it would be for group buy put me down as a possible buy. I plan on getting the plates and if MoonRock says these bolts are better because of the torx bit key.

Not sure if you looked at the website, but these bolts are a true security bolt with a special cut for the key. You can only get the key from the manufacturer. Its not the standard torx that you can get at wally world or an auto parts store.

Just an FYI, if you can't get the 1.5's, the 2 inch will fit as well. I have the 2 inch in mine.

Did you just reference your own post and say "such a good question"?...

It is a very subjective question.
    • If you want the maximum protection from cutting then the thickest steel might be better
    • If you live where there is road salt use, then aluminum might be better
    • If you off road and will use them as skid plates, steel might be better since it is stronger and "slides" better on rocks than aluminum
    • If you are concerned about payload capacity/weight then aluminum might better
    • If you... well there are so many...
Basically it comes down to a matter of choice for your application.

You are correct that the front/transmission plate covers the front cats and the rear/transfer case plate covers the rear cats. According to posts, the rear plates are more effective on 4WD Tundras due to the larger transfer case.

Yeah I did.. haha. But thanks for that info and putting things into perspective. No salt use, no off-roading or towing/hauling. Just my every day non-4x4 truck. So it really just comes down to how much I want to spend I guess? Any real benefit to the powder coat besides the "look"..?

Not much benefit to powder coat on Aluminum in my opinion - just looks. For the steel the plates should either be powder coated or prep'd and painted to prevent rust. I went with 1/8" powder coated steel for all 3 plates (engine/traditional skid plate, front cat and back cat). I was torn between powder coating or painting myself with rattle-can bed liner.

It has only been a week or so since I ordered, so eagerly waiting.

That sounds good. So I'm thinking of doing the lightest steel and then just have it powder coated and be done with it. I'm really thinking if someone rolls under the truck and sees plates, they are going to move on and not mess with it. I'd think time is of the essence with those people so move on to an easier score. That's just my logic behind it and could be totally wrong.

My truck is parked in a garage every night out in the country, but I do park in the city a lot for events and things, so it has me paranoid about it. Thanks for replying and giving me that info!

Question for anyone using the standard bolts that Tyler is sending with the plates. Could someone easily grind off the heads on them to remove them?

It's possible. The plates are more of a deterrent for the quick in and out thief.

Agreed. Anyone with enough time and tools can get past any deterrent. The goal is to make them say "Not worth the risk and effort"and move on.

Accidently posted this in the "what have you done to your 3rd Gen today" thread. Reposting here where it belongs.

I think if we are concerned with someone removing the plates, cutting the plates, grinding the bolts, et cetera, then adding the motorcycle alarm to the plates should be the next step.

Glue a high-powered magnet to this and place it on the top side of the plate and leave it there. Even has a remote to turn on and off (as long as it has a signal behind the plate). It would need to be on the plate away from the exhaust/cats to not get melted/damaged.

This is exactly the alarm I used and epoxied some magnets to it and a plate and clamped it behind the muffler using the exhaust clamp that attaches the tailpipe section. Very sensitive.

See post #181 for a rough idea of where i decided to place it before i made the magnet bracket.

Thanks for the confirmation. I am surprised it hasn't melted there.

I personally do not plan to use this as I think the plates will be enough of a deterrent, however, this on the plates seems like the next level.

Actually it stays pretty cool, there is good air flow and the plate i used is aluminum so that helps too. I was more worried about it getting wet, but it does not rain here too much. I too no longer use this since I got the plates on. Though i may use it if i park for an extended time in a public place, like the beach all day or something, the sound may make a thief nervous if there is people around.
