I bought this 2003 Corolla as a economical commuter with how things are progressing, and should progress through summer. Perhaps even longer than that. 4Cyl, 129k miles, $3,500 out the door. Long history of routine maintenance at dealers using Vin number to confirm.

    20210523_152320.jpg

I'm not really going to "build" this out like I did my truck. This is just where I'm going to post maintenance records so I have easy access to them.

Plans for right now include, but are not limited to:
    1. Oil change/filter.
    2. Transmission drain/fill.
    3. Top off fluids as needed.
    4. Headlight housings replacement.
    5. Possibly LED bulbs on exterior.
    6. Definitely LED bulbs on interior.
    7. Possibly a light bar somewheres.
    8. Anything else I can think of.
Edit: Purchased with matching set of Bridgestone Encopia 195/65R15

Dog piss not included with original purchase. +3 MPG.

Awesome, Noah! Really watch out for the deer, though.

@empty_lord you're the master of resto on used rigs. Any suggestions?

Thanks! I'm hopeful to get use out of it until 2024. :rofl:Deer permitting

I pulled the transmission dipstick before I bought it. Fluid on the stick looked pretty dingy. I'm gonna go out to the local Wallace wurl soon, and pick up some valvoline type T-IV fluid. Try to change that, and the oil today.

    Oil looked like oil.

Timing chain tensioner probably is leaking. There’s a chance the back of the head seeps oil.. but yea ignore that. Bug thing is regular maintenance. Get it up to date. They’re bulletproof cars

Use the larger oil filter for the oil. YZZF1 is what I ran on the car. Took ~4.3 quarts. Just put 4.5 in. Only use 5w-30. I ran Mobil one extended in it. Car never skipped a beat. Miss the 06 I had.

Get some S model head lights from TYC or better yet OEM. replace the low beam with 9012 bulbs, and the high beam with 9011. Slight bulb tab trimming required, out performance any LEDs i tried in my 06.

Prius wheels can be found cheap and are a nice upgrade from the OEM steelies youve got, wheels should transfer over and you might gain a WEE bit in MPG with the ultra light Prius aluminum (i have prius wheels on my corolla.. LOL)

Great info! I honestly can't thank you enough!
Two things I'll need today lol. Torque specs for the transmission, and oil drain plugs.

Think its 3.5 quarts for gender neutral shift juice?

I'll keep an eye out on skaggslist for prius wheels. Any extra MPGs I can squeeze out will be choice.

I went to the local junkyard to pickup a full size spare for the Pius. Probably find a set there if you have a yard local.
Definitely going to need to add Raptor lights to that. (you should just, well - 'cuz.)

Oil filter/change done, and Transmission drain/fill at 129,256 miles.

    Old shift juice.
    20210523_192239.jpg
    New shift juice.

    20210523_192247.jpg

Dick-less, and lip-less at Murfreesboro Toyota put the oil filter on with about 7 ugga duggas. I couldn't get it loose. Had to run out, and buy a proper 3/8 drive wrench for the filter. Couldn't find the YZZF1 as Wallace wurl and autobones were sold out. Purchased two YZZF2. Dexron IV for shift juice.

Changed the reverse lights to LED as I had that bulb on hand.

So after wallering around on the ground inspecting things, I'm noticing things I didn't before.

Coolant overflow reservoir has a crack about half way up. Didn't see it on PDI due to hair line. Noticed it after topping off coolant. It's part of the Auxiliary fan so I'll have to pay some monies for that one.

    20210523_213045.jpg

Front left pinch weld or hook is bent inwards towards the middle of the car, and right underneath the radiator center support is bent straight back towards the rear of the car. I didn't have ramps to take with me to pull it up, and onto when I did my inspection. Y'all already know this fat boy can't get underneath the car without ramps.
    20210523_213050.jpg

I don't think these are going to be huge issues, but surprised the damage didn't show up on carfax. Probably a minor accident at low speed that the previous owner just said fuck it.

One of the two previous owners must have had, or personally installed this Kenwood aftermarket head unit. It does everything I care about. Blueteef. Saves me work. Win.

    20210523_214156.jpg

Also, this vent doesn't stay where I put it on the vertical axis. Don't really care too much about that either. Possible flea-bay item.

@empty_lord. Are there LEDS to be changed out or is all this stuff soldered on boards? I absolutely love the dash, but just wish it had oil pressure also. I'm just not much a fan of the green anymore.

    20210523_213736.jpg

This compartment door is fubar. Don't really care that much unless I find a cheap flea-bay part.

    20210523_213747.jpg

Drivers side window switch trim is broke-dick. May peruse flea-bay for this. Not really a huge issue for me.

My rollover doesn’t appear on car fax... that core support damage is fine. As long as the hood closes and nothings rubbing

For the cluster they’re LED. You can put other corolla clusters in with different colors. But meh.
The center stack I believe is neowedge bulbs. But it’s been soo long I don’t remember

Good deal. Nothing appears to be rubbing, or sounds like it is. Hood closes fine if dropped from about 6-8 inches. Won't latch if I push it down like my truck will. Even then it takes a small amount of force on the Tundra.

Plenty of times I've been stuck in a ditch (189) and didn't report it as there was no real damage.

I'm sure there's a youboob video out there. Now, if only I could get those damned bulbs out of the bottom of the rear view. My masking tape isn't sticky enough lol

Led cargo/trunk light that's probably way too bright for its job. :laser:

Led License plate bulbs that are perfect for their job. I'll have to see about removing the rear trim above the license plate, and sealing up where the light is coming through above the left light in the photo.

The screw in tie-down for the donut was just rolling around in the floorboard there. Remdied. Lug wrench was loose cargo also. Remedied. My filter socket thing just so happens to be a perfect fit inside the foam dome that sits over the screw in tie-down.

Spare filter also in the area. Nothing else I have uses either of those so this is perfect storage. No need to lose them in the clutter.

Also, came with two OEM keys, and two OEM working key fobs.

Check engine code for P0420. Will mend that sometime soon after I get Haynes, and confirm rear sensor is dead as I suspect from scan-tool.

Thank you much! As most of the regulars know... I drive 100~ish miles a day, at least Monday through Friday. This should help minimize future petrol expense.

I did the math with my tundra as I've been keeping track.
Average MPG is 15.8. Round up to 16 for easier math. 100 miles divided by 16 mpg equals 6.25 gallons of gas. Pretty much a quarter tank daily. $4.00 gas costs multiplied by 6.25 gallons of gas is $25 to commute back, and forth to work. Monday through Friday. Monday through Friday fuel expense assuming $4.00 gas, and consistent MPG.

    $25 multiplied by 5 days equals $125 a week.

Adds up quickly over the course of a year.

either that or broken welds around the cat. but typically you'd hear that. GET AN DENSO sensor. Best to replace both if ones dead. the front sensor can fail and cause a false 420 code too.

She runs quiet as a barn mouse. I figure it's just a dead sensor. Drove exceptionally the 120 miles home. Waiting till monday for stuff to open to get insurance ball rolling, tags, taxes...

Changed interior dome festoon to LED courtesy of passenger side vanity light from the Tundra as I rarely have passengers.

Changed the PRNDL oem green to cool white led...

Can confirm the other lights are neowedge. I may just go back to OEM green led. It's sorta growing on me now that I've had the dash apart...

yup. Plus the tundra will depreciate less with less miles and when shit breaks on the tundra it’s gonna be more expensive in general to fix.

don’t want to go full tree hugger but you can also feel pretty good about using less Dino juice and saving some for Elon Musk’s escape plan, I mean “Mars mission”.

    Seconded.
This provides perfect color rendering. Leds will not.

Led lights in a 2003 corolla will attract some extra attention you probably won't want.

P0420 might be the cat.. oil burning might be an issue on the 1zz.. I mean you can still get 26mpg even with a bad cat. My Celica did for years, before I moved it out and had to smog it and was forced to replace the cat, and yes I did replace both upstream and downstream sensors and the code still came back.
