We have all different kinds of birds of prey. A mating pair of Mississippi Kite, several different kinds of owls, lots of Swainsons hawks (like a Red Tail) and this year for the first time we have a Southeastern American Kestrel.
To say I'm excited is an understatement, it has always been my favorite bird of prey. I thought I'd seen it several times hunting in our yard but they are so fast its a little hard to be sure. Yesterday I made a positive ID. They are small, not much bigger than a Robin, but their colors are really bright and catch your eye easily. Sadly no picture so heres one of the internet

Yes, I've seen the Swainsons snag a Dove out of the air 10 ' in front of me at 6' off the deck.

This guy is using the bird feeder as his buffet. lol

    EDIT: Dove not pigeon

Bald eagle got one of my neighbors chickens a few weeks ago. He saw it from the kitchen window. They have been around more and more the past few years. Love to see them.

We have a nesting pair of Kestrels across the street. They take turns killing the house finches that used to hang out at my friends bird feeders at the side of the house. Ha! A couple weeks ago the male was up in our big tree out back. He had a field mouse clutched in one of his talons. He called out a couple times and the female came and got the mouse and flew back across the street into some spruce trees. Was kind of kuul. We have some Peregrines hang out occasionally too. House finches are on the down low......

This last Sunday I saw this eagle hovering up above catching the wind currents just doing circles, I took a picture but it’s a terrible picture, damn iPhones don’t take as good a picture as you think they should ha ha, a few years ago I saw a red tail hawk swoop down and grab a squirrel, and proceeded to go onto a limb and devour the whole squirrel tail and all, it was quite a sight to see

Here's some nice pics of the House Finches that love our bird feeders when Kestrel's nest nearby. Oh......wait....20210518_162941.jpg 20210518_162952.jpg

Just got a three F-16 fly by. Hauling ASS! Faster than Kestrels. I'm guessing 500+ :oldglory:

Proof! Just snagged two quick pics before the male took off. Maybe 20 seconds at best to get these two shots before he flew away. Kestrel's are very aloof....20210519_183619.jpg 20210519_183645.jpg

No pics but there are several bald eagles on Reel Foot lake in west TN. During duck season if you don’t pick your ducks up fast enough the eagles swoop in and carry them off.

The kestrels have a very distinctive chirp.
Whenever I hear it I always look to the closest cypress and usually see it on top looking for it’s next meal

I've seen 10+ at the South end of Don Pedro lake in N. California in the winter but that would be cool as heck to see.

Those are cool. I have a lot of hawks and owls, no pics because I'm usually driving when I see the hawks and the owls are only out at night here. The owls hang out on telephone poles behind my house to hunt gophers and rabbits in the field. My dog barks at them, he doesn't like their hoots.

I saw a turkey vulture walking down my street recently too. Not a predator but was cool to see.

I have a friend thats a master falconer and he does a lot of rescue/rehab. This my mom with one of his rehabs, he brought it over about 6 months later and let my wife release it. That bird lived here for 9 yrs and then I stopped seeing it, it was banded.

So today I walked out back and the tree line is about 20 yrds behind the house and I see this guy come up off the ground with a screaming squirrel and it lands on this fence which is about 50 yards from where I was standing. I used the trees to hide me while it ate and I managed to get about 25 yards from it. Sadly, shitty potato pics but better than nothing.

I thought it was but pretty sure I'm mistaken, the white on the tail feathers give it away and I missed that in my excitement. Its either a Harris or Swainsons hawk. But its flipping huge, I've handled 20-30 of them and none were as big as this bird.
I had thought it was a fledgling Golden Eagle, bummer.

Yeah, pretty sure Goldens don’t nest down there. You’re in Louisiana right? I was thinking Red-shouldered from the pick or Broadwinged. But if it was huge than not a BW. Plus the white on the bottom of the tail like you mentioned wouldn’t be BW but Harris’s have that. A bit out of “range” but not much.

If you get better pics be sure to post em.

Me and my two boys go up to northern Minn looking for owls in the winter, pretty awesome when you find one. 00E236D4-1CD1-4A12-B875-58A27FA15DC0.jpg7083C654-BC07-4CAF-93DE-46F93A413156.jpg

    Great pics !
We have tons of owls, I just turned up the TV because they are so loud. Really one of my favorite birds.
I backed my truck up the other day to leave and almost as soon as I got clear, a Kite swooped down and grabbed something that had been under my truck and then flew right past me at eye level.

We do get Goldens on occasion which is why I got so excited. Sadly all I have is an IPhone for a camera.

Jealous of the Kites. If we get one up here it’s a big deal. Only have seen one before. Swallow tailed.
We have Goldens come thru in November but you have to know where and when to look and get a little lucky.
