    My beloved maple edge grain BOOS board is showing signs of separating

    I admit I slacked off over the last couple months in maintaining it
    I had been using oil from Howard’s but we are out of stock so i ordered some BOOS mystery oil
    Any hope in stopping these splits from getting any worse

    What are the dimensions of the board and how deep is the juice groove routed in?
    If the thickness allows, I would drill 3 long horizontal holes through the entire board and run 1/4” all thread at each end and 1 in the middle. Countersink the washers and nuts at each end and glue in wood plugs.

    Boards a good 2-1/2 inches thick. Blood groove is about 3/4 inch thick

    Had not thought about the all thread thing, might have to consider that if things get worse.

    Do you have any wood working tools? To fix it right you would likely need to separate it, rejoint it and Reglue it.

    A quick fix would be getting a good grade wood glue and If you have any sawdust around mix it in with the glue and then fill the crack with that.

    No wood working tools at all. I might contact BOOS and see what they recommend

    Boos warranty and repair direct would be my first route.

    Having no wood working skills yourself, you could try Chair Doctor glue and some clamps for a quick fix. Mask off the crack (so you don't get glue all over it), squirt the glue in deep, clamp it, wait for it to dry and then scrape off any excess.

    No crack is good, but the fact that it's on the seam boasts well for repair or even better, Boos warranty or fix.

    I try to oil and wax my Boos monthly, but I also slack off every once in a while. This is a good reminded to make sure I do it regularly.

    If boos does not warranty this just fill it like I mentioned above. If you try to reclamp it you will likely cause that crack to run and separate somewhere else. You really want to seal any cracks or gouges you may get over time because it’s a great place to harbor bacteria making your entire board unsafe to use... unless you got those iron guts :D

    Here’s what I believe;
    The cracks/separation are caused by the wood moving. Shrinking, expanding etc. Any glue or fillers will not stop the movement. Obviously the manufacturers adhesive is inadequate. A solid mechanical fastener is the only way to assure no further movement. I have repaired 36” antique doors with the all thread method. When I build multilayer slabs I use dowels or biscuits.

    Wood moves and will crack but oiling helps limit this. I don’t think I’d worry too much about it. Get a piece of beeswax and work it into the crack to seal it from debris.
