Just bought a set of pre-owned rims via FB marketplace. I know Buyer Beware but... I reviewed many photos, video, and discussed with the Seller in detail on the condition - like new, no curb rash, no damage. Rims show up loose in the boxes and have fading/light scratching to the outer most protrusion on each “spoke”, almost as if they were rubbing on something or cleaned with an abrasive brush. Seems unlikely from cleaning because it is nowhere else on the rims. Could it be from rubbing in the box during shipment? Is this fixable or $$? Paid $1400 for the set expecting like new. Also a bit of rash. What would you do?? Seller seems transparent and reasonable on making things right.

That all looks like shipping damage due to inadequate packaging. Absolutely a return and refund. If they are anything but happy to do it, I'd dispute the charges any way I could.

I am actually surprised that a cardboard box could do that much damage. I guess if dirt or other particulate gets between the rim and box and it rubs then it makes sense that it would cause the scratching and wear/fading, especially since it only is at the interfaces between rim and box, and there was nothing to keep the rim in place or protected from moving around in the box.

You can sharpen (or dull) a knife with cardboard. It's pretty abrasive. combine that with the ability of the wheel to slide back and forth... it's like fine sandpaper.

Due to shipping costs, I would see what it would cost to have them refinished or powdercoated and see about him covering that bill. If he agrees, I would send him the invoice from the shop and get the money before the work is done. If he doesn't agree to that, send them back with the shipping cost on him. I bet next time he will properly package items.

Before powder coating or anything I would try a ceramic coating. CarPro dlux or similar may get them to look real good again. In your last pic that is more of road rash and nothing but a refinish will fix that. $1400 for that set of wheels is a very good price. If you have been looking awhile then you probably already know that.

I agree send them back. Or keep them and have seller refund you 500 if you can live with scratches.

But is $1400 a good price considering price to refinish? How much should I expect to refinish? $100/wheel?

Idk the price to refinish. If you want them perfect then I would return. If you are cool with them being a little messed up and want to try and get them to look a little better try to polish and coat.

$1400 is a pretty stellar price. I paid $2k for a take off set with Michelins. If it were me I'd return them. If you want to go thru the hassle to check on professional painting or coating then I would do that and then make the final decision. Like others have said it depends on how long you've been looking. It took me a while to find the set I snagged and I have to drive 2 hours (1 way) to meet the guy.

Ask for discount to cover cost of repair or return them if you are not happy? Never know how long until you find another set though.

I would just ask for 100-200 bucks back and call it a day. Really that isn't bad and you'll probably never notice it once it's on the truck, just buff out the light scratching.

Dang - you must be the guy who drove from Evansville, IN to TN to get that set on Saturday! That was a deal, only 3K miles on the tires and rims and with the TPMS!

Wheel Doctor: looking at complete refinish which would be powder coating the whole rim including lettering $100/125 per wheel, earliest appointment in July.

Definitely not doing this as it will ruin the look of the TRD Pro rim... so now it is down to living with it or returning. Anyone have before and after using polish for a similar situation?

Don’t think you will find a pic of a similar situation pro wheels are hard enough to find. Drive over to advanced or auto zone pick up some correcting cream and polish and try a small spot on the rim. If that makes them look better then go with it. Otherwise send em back and buy another set. Also these rims had issues before they ever saw a box. There is no way the cardboard magically got inside the wheel to cause these issues. that is just dust thankfully. I will give it a shot with the cream and polish. He offered to refund me $500 bringing the total cost for 4 rims and center caps to $900. That might be enough to sway me

That’s cheap as hell. I’m fairly sure if you polish them and coat they will look pretty damn good. I think @War Machine has used cerakote trim on wheels but I’ll let him chime in. If so cerakote is $20 and you have the luxury of doing all this while sitting inside which is awesome. You could also possibly bring them to a professional detailer and see if they can help you out.

FYI from our perspective anyone that’s willing to get rid of those wheels for that price sounds a little sketchy so they may have been that way before they went in a box. Shippers won’t give anything for it because they will claim they were not packed right.

Just my $.02, but I’d go with what @Swfltoyomafia said. that seems a little odd to just ditch them like that. First thing I’d do is make sure they’re balanced and don’t have some unseen damage. If they don’t balance they’re going back. Worry about the finish once you know you have wheels that will run true. Run a dial indicator over them and make sure something isn’t way off

Not me, got mine about 8 months ago. I drove from TN (Chattanooga) to GA (Atlanta) to meet some guy with a 2020 TRD Pro Tundra, who literally drove his Tundra from the dealership to a wheel/tire shop and had 20" rims and larger tires added. I bought his TRD Pro Rims/Michelin tire take-offs with less than 10 miles on them. I low balled him at $2k (he had them listed for $2,500).

Cerakote did work great on the wheels. It’s been a while since I’ve thoroughly washed that particular truck, so I’m not sure how it’s still holding up. It may improve the look somewhat, but not sure if it will help a ton.
It’s a cheap thing to try though, and you can always use it on other parts of your truck.

    This is not exactly true.
You just need to be sure a low temperature (sub 250*) cure powder is used.
