I added an additional cooler to my 2010 and put an inline magnefine filter. It was easy to change cause the grill raised with the hood. I tried to cut one open to see if it was dirty but just got plastic shavings everywhere. But it’s only $20. It was something like this.

I have one in my old Volvo that I got at 79k miles and installed the filter and aux cooler almost immediately. Keep changing the filter every couple of years or so. The wagon is a beater, drove me fully loaded far north in Canada for my overland trip many times. The known fragile Aisin-Warner AW55 transmission outlasted the engine and the rest of the drivetrain. It made to 225k miles without issues, now the clutch packs started to show signs of baldness, yet no valve body issues or clogged non-replaceable filter.

    Magnefine does work. Highly recommended.

Magnefine moved production from AUS to US, changing plastic to metal. Beware of old plastic design, that is probably a Chinese fake, like Raybestos.

Here I cut original Magnefine after 20k miles, on a tuned turbo engine + lead foot:

As you see, it filtered quite a bit. The stock heater exchanger does not get a full ATF flow - the transmission has a spring loaded valve inside that limits the pressure in cooler line - however Magnefine still was able to catch that friction material, which, otherwise, would end up depositing in valve body and oil pump.
