I am a bit confused regarding the over-the-air updates that the oem head unit performs vs the audio software updates via USB that are available on the toyota website. Are these one and the same or two completely separate software systems? Is the over-the-air updates just the entune app suite? I am tempted to try and apply the latest update for my 2020 tundra via USB which was released in Nov 2019 but of course, I don't want to brick the unit right before a long trip! The file name downloaded is 17TDT2NA-DA30_0006.kwi. The head unit says my current audio version is 1021 and navigation version is 1006. It's hard to find on the toyota site what the latest version of firmware should be. The Toyota site simply says:

Some 2020 model year vehicles equipped with Audio Plus (version 1035) or Premium Audio (version 1035) or earlier may exhibit one or both of the following conditions:

I assume I am running 1021...an older version?

Well, I just decided to “go for it”. Turns out the firmware on the Toyota site is version 1047 and newer than mine, 1021. The update process went without a hitch and it did address a problem I experienced with the Wi-Fi hotspot always turning off. So…in the end with a little prayer and some courage, I answered my own question. The audio software updates via USB are unique from the over the air Entune updates. I do find it interesting that the dealer did not install the update before delivering the vehicle to me in Late Dec of 2019.

What does your “info” screen show for version now?
This is what my 2021 JBL shows right now:

@RainMan_PNW I can take a picture tomorrow but audio shows 1047 and navigation shows 1006. There was only one file available for update and it was for the audio.

How did you go about checking for the update? When I log into the Toyota website and click check for updates, it says page not found every time. And the toyota entune app only has a rating of 1.4 and I dont want to screw anything up. Thanks in advance for any input.

upload_2021-5-10_15-8-47.jpg @RainMan_PNW here’s a pic of my screen after updating. You can see the audio version is 1047 now. You and I have different year vehicles so our versions may not be identical. Plus you have the TRD Pro, a much cooler truck than mine!

@sportrider this is the site I went to: https://securedp.toyota.com/download-app/downloads

You just enter your model, year, and whether or not you have navigation. Let me know if I can help any further.

    Question...

I bought a members HU W nav. I was going to do the update. Does it HAVE to be specific to that year. I want to say his was a 2017 I bought from, I have to look back for certainty. My 2018 w.o. nav has an update but I'm currently utilizing the nav unit.

    Any input would be appreciated

Disregard it was a 2018 that it was taken out of.

My unit has randomly restarted itself several times recently then stopped. Junk

No, I was just signing in to my account on the toyota website. It has an area for multimedia and updates but the link doesn't work. I will try this. Thanks Tim!

From that ^^^ link it looks like the non-navigation update was posted to Toyota's update site in the year 2017. So no update in the last 3+ years for the non-nav units. Do I see and read that correctly? (I did the 2017 update 2 years ago).

I think most of the updates occur OTA via the Entune app. It seems like updates are only released via USB for issues that need an offline install, like firmware and such. But there’s not a ton of info out there on rhyme or reason, so I’m just spitballing.

Well, that worked. No thanks to the janky instructions from Toyota. A few notes for the peeps:
    • The download will give you a .wki file and the download instructions tell you to save it to a USB. Format a USB (2gb or larger) to FAT32 format on a PC (not an Apple product...cuz da chit don't work).
    • The load instructions start with "Download both software files to one USB flash drive". This is what happens when the driveline engineer says "I wanna work in computers". There is one file, not two. Ignore this monkey-poo and take the USB with the .wki file to the truck.
    • The load process is 16 steps. But since the driveline engineer cannot count, it is only numbered to 11. Just follow the sequence.
    • The way I read the final instruction is after the engine restart the load will continue. Maybe that happens under certain conditions, but mine was done after the restart. Just restart the engine, let Entune boot and confirm the update.

Just did mine on a 2020 SR5 non-nav unit and @Green Thunder is spot on... easy install, janky instructions. My update was released on Oct 2 2019.

    toyo6.jpg toyo5.jpg toyo4.jpg toyo3.jpg toyo2.jpg toyo1.jpg

Before I did the update, I tried to "check for updates" on my phone/Toyo App and it said nothing available- however the USB said differently.

First post, just signed up... This post trigged my OCD for updating my head unit... No real reason other than, I felt like there should be some software updates seeing as I bought a generation 1 head unit (in the sense, first to have apple CarPlay), and every time I check it says it's up-to-date (lies!) :)

Looking at the Toyota Firmware Update site referenced previously, for my model/year returned no results/no update.
My HU was running stock, never updated 1021 and 1006...
I found how to manually download the 17TDT2NA-DA30_0006.kwi file (hint: https://www.toyota.com/firmware-download/<filename>.kwi || 17TDT2NA-DA30_0006.kwi) // doesn't work for the files referenced below, or navigation based on my attempts...

The 006 file took my HU up to 1047 and 1006... as mentioned in this thread. :) Good, all done right?!?! -- Nah, wife went to bed early which allowed me to do some additional nerdy stuff and try to get an even more updated version.
Ended up paying for a 2-day TIS account (mentioned on another thread/site); and browsing all the TSBs for newer software.

Latest TSB: (attached to this thread)
    T-SB-0043-21 June 9, 2021
Audio Head Unit Software Update (Panasonic)
    upload_2021-9-11_21-39-15.jpg

I ended up downloading them, and trigger released, now it is running Audio Version: 1162 and Navigation: 1150.
Initial impressions look about the same, maybe a little less lag in the menu compared to my original 1021... They also renamed the "Entune" stuff to "Apps" or something, I saw no mention of Entune anywhere in the settings or apps page.
No noticeable difference to audio yet, but I'll test more in the days to come.

    upload_2021-9-11_21-47-56.jpg
    upload_2021-9-11_21-48-21.jpg

I still need to read the rules before I feel comfortable sharing a link to the firmware... TSB attached (don't see any harm there).
Once I read rules, if it's permitted, I'll share a public link to the firmware so no one needs to pay the $65 for TIS... -- and upgrade at your own risk.

Edit: zipped file containing both 0066 update files. I just placed them on a USB drive formatted with FAT32 (nothing else but the two files on the root); started up the truck and checked for an update. Took ~5minutes to update. Restarted the truck (off/on), and it was good to go. No messing with the battery.

Good find, and I’m sure this will help out others on here. There’s no issue with sharing public links, but it might be a decent idea to download and archive it so you can throw it up on Dropbox or something similar if Toyota shuts down their hosted link.

Thanks for the quick reply! I just checked and didn't see anything about posting the link.. So I edited the previous post.
    Here's the download link again:

    or:

*I'll also stash these, so if the links get removed PM me. The original TIS links point to an obfuscated URL, seems to be tied to my login… so these are hosted elsewhere. The TSB posted/attached above provides some good references to the various revision changes… pretty sure I was running into a few of those, and just was living with it. Hopefully the new version is stable.

Again, disclaimer... Update at your own risk. It worked for me, but might not work for others. :)

Do these updates apply to us SR5 folks? I do have Bluetooth and navigation, although I'm not sure if it's officially "entune" or not. I tried typing my VIN into the Toyota software update status website to check for eligibility, and it takes me to an inactive web page.

I believe all Tundra trims use some version of Entune. The firmware update website doesn’t work well on my mobile device but works just fine on the laptop. Just be certain you are applying the correct update for your specific radio model. I just did another update to mine about a month ago which was released back in August. The update process has worked just fine for me

@HamHands - My post #16 was for the SR5 without Nav but I think #20 is for Nav. And agree with Paco, use a computer, download to USB and then plan for 15-20 minutes of sitting in your truck while this updates.
