I think the last thing you want to do is suddenly hit the brakes.

If you see a large puddle coming, sure, try and slow down a little before you hit it.

Otherwise, just be ready to turn on the wipers.

Ha! You would need 18" wide fender flares.....but that would look just plain stupid....heh...heh.
If I saw you coming my way after a heavy rain....I hope my windows are up:thumbsup::mudding:

Yep, hydroplaning is more of a concern combined with going too fast for the conditions. I see this so much. As much as insurance adjusters.... Common sense always is a virtue.

@Paco_the_Priest No your Holiness. No flares on my truck at this time. The TRD models have the angular skid plate, not the shovel/scooped version. I have an RCI skid with similar geometry of the TRD skid

I disagree that flares will completely fix the issue.

Does the skid plate factor into my issue?

No. But nice to have if you ever adventure off the road. The OEM skid is marginal at best. Very thin but suffices for most Tundra owners. RCI is located near me. Worth the upgrade. Has an access plate to make changing oil a lot easier. I had full RCI skids on my 07. Doing the same on my 14. The OEM skid is like an American cheese slice. Minimalist protection at best. Paco, I'm assuming you are a Priest. I'm not trying to make things hard for you deliberately. You stated that you are new to trucks. We want you to feel safe when driving your quite nice 1794. I don't go to church much anymore but when I did....church every Sunday. More Bible study after church every Sunday. Bible school every summer as a kid. I was an Alter Boy for several years. Now the nitty gritty no matter how painful you might take this......
I was in the choir. Still great at Karaoke. We had choir practice every Wednesday night. Twice a week before Xmas. We'd actually go caroling before and had a quite very nice Xmas pageant for lack of better word at church the night before Xmas eve. Was great. Reverend Cook and then his Canuck replacement Reverend Bailey had of course many things in common, but....mostly..... They......both......had......lead.......feet!!
After Wednesday's choir practice they'd drop all of us kids back at home. Countryside rural ranch life. We kids were somewhat scattered. To get us home by a late dinner......they hauled us in the church 64 2WD Chevy with a camper. We all rode in the camper and would get bounced all over the place! Was fun looking back at it now but I truly think that men of God do have a tendency to.....drive.....too.....fast! They have other members of the flock to deal with too! I survived. You will too...slow down. Life is short! I'm in no hurry to meet the big Boss!!

I think speed is more of a factor but the skid plate may be one too if you have one. I really don't know without testing and filming.

The OEM skid is shaped like a snow shovel, if you have one it may explain why you are experiencing splashing this way

Those are air dams... They didn't disappear in 2018, either. So much wrong with this post.

The water hitting the windshield is partially from what is being thrown forward, so these may have a small impact, but they are not there to prevent this "problem."

OP, slow down. Use wipers in wet conditions.

EVERY vehicle I've had, and there have been many,, is capable of throwing water over its windshield if a deep puddle is entered (insert innuendo joke) at higher speed.

Possibly, but we all get that cheesey skid unless you get the Pro skid. (RCI is much better and lower cost.) Here's my cheesey skid.......ha!

Perhaps my problem is the OEM skid plate, no flares, and speed. I can’t see spending $500 for flares so I’ll try to be much more careful with my speed and see if I was going faster than I realized.

They say boats are money pits, but a fella can be drawn into spending tons of money on a truck!

No need to make a full confession! Life is indeed short and we should make the most of it and count our blessings frequently. Also I can take a ribbing and folks vehemently disagreeing; I have somewhat thick skin. I appreciate all the advice and experience being offered. Have a blessed evening!

Thanks for that. You definitely do not want my "full" confession!

Most of us here have a great sense of humor. Sarcasm is king at times. This forum can be fun but we also want to help. We all have different opinions and experiences. Hang in there. You are on the best truck forum!

But there is SO MUCH RIGHT about this thread so we've reached balance! .... I was actually going to comment on those too. Lots of folks on here refer to them as mud flaps...I get triggered every time.

They help shape the air around the tires to reduce turbulence.

Edit: I'll see if I can find a good video demonstrating this.

School me then. Seriously. If I am wrong I want to be corrected.

I specifically asked my dealer (parts guy) about this when I parked beside an older Tundra. None of the 18 or 19s had them on the lot.

The explanation I was given is the lip prevented the water from pushing forward and in front of the truck. The part was even called “splash guard”.

Edit: is this maybe a Canada different thing? I looked at a neighbors truck and he also didn’t have it. But I just looked at a pic of a new Pro on the site snd it has it. I’ll edit my previous post to not mislead.

Voodoo Blue wasn't on Tundras until 2019. Here's a VB tundra with them.

    upload_2021-5-8_18-10-55.jpg

Cavalry Blue was also not available until after 2019, and here is my truck the day I got it home.

    upload_2021-5-8_18-14-11.jpg

That said, it appears I am wrong about the name. I apologize, they are called splash guards. Even with them in place, high speed water entry will throw water up and out far enough due to the truck's raised bumper. You don't have as much of this on cars and such because they are only a few inches above the ground, but they can still douse their own windshields when going fast into a deep puddle. These splash guards and fender flares may help, but the primary factor is going to be speed.

Edit: Not sure where you are, but maybe they are removed for different regions? Every 2014+ Tundra I have ever seen has them from the factory.

Np, correct, no other mods, brand new off the dealer. Factory tires. I have the TRD off road package though, so not sure if it's a suspension geometry difference from standard or also the tires on the 18" wheels vs 20".

Awesome post - I like being adjusted to correct info.

I need to drive over to a dealer here and see if the Canadian 2021s have it. My 18 does not and neither does the 2020 Limited that lives down the road.

Edit: checked pics of Tundras for sale around here. Some have them. Thanks for correcting me.

OOOOH! Didn't pay attention to where you were. Canada and US trucks have some really weird differences regarding included equipment and options. It's not like we are in drastically different regions of the world with hugely different needs in our vehicles. Makes me scratch my head sometimes. Always causes confusion comparing Canada and US trucks.

These are "splash guards". (see below). I was also told that those tiny flaps in front were air dams too. Pre 14 front tire flippy flaps were even smaller. Those definitely would not have anything to do with preventing water from going forward. No way. I know if you go to the Yota parts department and request a replacement set of "splash guards" you will get a set of these and not the flaps in front of the tires>>>> (mine are a step up from Rad Rubber. Better than the OEM's)

I know my '10 and '17 both had issues with throwing water on the windshield. When it happened ot was like somebody just dumped a 5gal bucket at once. Definitely lost visibility for 2-3 seconds. Never ever encountered it on the interstates, but had it several times on surface streets with poor drainage and normal driving conditions (25 - 35 mph). Both also had the stock skid plate. I also know when driving thru failrly deep water for hurricane Harvey my truck was throwing a lot of water forward. Front license plate was damn bent at a right angle. I dont recall having the issue since switching over to my RCI skid.

Hmmm, I can't say I've had this happen to me yet. Maybe I just never noticed, but then again, I think that is something I would notice easily lol.

Maybe I show try to get a video of it next time it has rained. Might be another good reason to buy a dashcam. Also maybe it’ll tell I am just going too fast which is the general consensus.
