If it has almost 300k on it then they got plenty of life out of it. Even with a new(er) transmission I'm not sure I would put even $5k into it. Basically you can't compress a liquid. I had a friend who found out the hard way when he went through a deep puddle and bent a connecting rod. The volume inside the cylinder when the piston is at top dead center is very small. Having just a little bit of liquid inside there can reduce that volume to a fraction of what it should be. When the pressure gets above what it's designed for something has to give. If they don't need a truck I would look for a used Rav4. Around here a beater truck is something that you would put a plow on and never leave your yard.

    Dr_Al,
I appreciate that, had a mechanic drop a screw down into my intake years ago, (side job) it started knocking on that cylinder. You are right anything in that bore that is not supposed to be there, can cause damage.
You mentioned a plow, reminded me, I see trucks here in New Mexico, with Farm Tags on them, in PA, my hometown also, think that is like a truck that stays on the farm and pulls a wagon or moves hay or crops to the barn.
20 years ago in Tulsa, OK. I was still in the Marines, wanted a beer, I asked for a "draft", bar maid did not understand. I pointed to the man's beer glass next to me, "Oh, you want a draw", (draught). Had to get used to peanut shells on the floor, my comrade said it conditions the wooden dance floor. Every corner of this great land has a little different dialog.

So I told dear Mom, her Toyota engine has piston ring failure, (shot). Recommend selling as is, buy something more affordable. She is the Minister of the Church on Navajo Reservation and delivers water, food, masks, bibles, clothes to the Nation.

Sounds like she is going to get a Toyota engine from some where and have a local associate replace it. The dealers wants $11,000 for a used 5.7 engine replacement.
Told her I had my old Silverado replaced (V-6) at the dealer 7 years ago for $4,500 out the door with a REMAN, Vortec.

Appreciate your advice, and comments, Moms going to do what she wants to do, guess she likes her Tundra, nothing wrong with that.

    Rph74,

Thanks for the lead, this seems like a good price for reman. 5.7 with warranty. Looks like a long block. I sent link to Candi, she may buy it, for her Mom.

Sounds to me like the grinding noise was probably the timing chain, which skipped some teeth causing low compression on all the cylinders (you'll have low compression if the valves are open...)

The driver's side timing chain tensioners are semi-problematic on the 5.7s. I just replaced mine.
