An argument could be made that NOT returning the cart to the corral actually provides more work and therefore jobs, for low income employees.
I don’t use the ‘self check out’ at stores because I think it’s taking away people’s jobs.
    The premise of the OP is a simplistic distortion of an old saying;
“The quality of a person’s character is determined by what they do when no one is watching and no one will ever know”

Why I always put it back or in the corral:

As for the low paid employee/jobs argument, that is misleading. The cart return people are baggers. When they are busy collecting carts because people are lazy assholes, they aren't bagging groceries speeding up the line.

I always return it, that's how I was raised. Its an extra commitment when you park a 1000 Ft. from the entrance to mitigate the possibility of anyone actually parking beside you. ;) When the wife comes with me to do a Home Depot run, I drop her off at the entrance before picking out my spot. :angrygirl:

Depends on my mood. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. Sometimes I'll take one I find in the lot and take it all the way into the store and put it with the others (assuming I don't intend to get enough stuff to need it). Sometimes on the way in I'll put a cart away if it is between two cars and likely to damage something. Sometimes I take my bags out on exit and put the cart back in line at the door instead of in the parking lot. Other times I don't bother with any of this. :notsure:

I rarely use a cart. I’ve been known to carry 8 or more hefty bags out the front door, after carrying two loaded baskets to the till. Me smart like dump truck.

I return carts when I arrive, don't want a wayward cart plowing into my truck. Wife usually returns the one we use. HEY, she says she needs the exercise !

    Not nearly enough room here!
The more "enlightened" and sophisticated we become, the more like barnyard animals we are.
The only body damage we have to our 04 Pilot is from one of these wastes of skin who were too lazy and entitled to act like a person and return the cart!

    Curse you Perry the Platypus!
I always put mine back in the designated return spot out in the paring lot. I also tidy up the adjacent ones when I push mine in (giggity). I wouldn't want a stray one smashing into my vehicle and I would hate to know that my cart smashed into someone else's vehicle.

Always take the cart back. Even when lazy people are about to leave there cart I will say “let me get that for you” and combine it with my cart.

    I'm a 100 percenter.

In fact, if a see a lazy, fat "savage" abandoning her/his cart right next to their car door, I'll grab it, walk it into the store, use it, then return it to the corral when I'm done. I can use the steps. Got to leave the world a better place...one cart at a time.

There's some crazy-a$$ human behavior here. I love it. I know nothing about human behavior but that doesn't stop me from posting comments on the internets.

OCD plus good parenting. Well done.

    Apt handle.

    Talk therapy might help.

At 16 w/out regrets? Fun. At 35 w/out regrets? See above.

    Overachiever.

I recommend the direct approach: just go directly to corporate and kick a real person in the nuts.

One time while waiting for the wife in my car, I noticed a woman loading groceries in her trunk and there was a good wind going that day and a cart was sailing right towards her brand new Cadillac on the opposite side, I honked my horn, she looked at me, I pointed to the cart, she ran over and just in the nick of time prevented it from smashing into the front fender of her car

Ghost ride the whip! Kick that mofo down the parking lot! Lmao jk!

I always try to return them. There’s been a few instances where I found a nice curb to park it at. But I always at least try to make sure it’s not going to hit anyone’s car. I usually grab a cart from the lot on my way in to the store to begin with. That cuts the middleman out right there from the start.

I worked at a grocery store as a teen and I pushed my fair share of carts. Saved many customers cars from a rogue shopping cart displaced by another customer LOL. I took it as a challenge! If people return the carts all the way to the store and not just to the cart return, it took away a portion of my job that I enjoyed. Pushing carts was my favorite when I worked at the store, got me out of the building and into the fresh air. And it’s what I was paid to do. My pet peeve was go backs, hated them with a passion. A cart full of small items was a nightmare for me. People putting their unwanted groceries in random places around the store and in the check stands, especially cold or frozen perishables, that’s the ultimate dick move in my opinion. Who knows how long it’s sat there, and then probably still ended up back on the shelf. Possibly getting someone sick.

Anyone want some previously room temperature chicken?
