I am looking to get my hands on a 3rd gen Tundra to do a little measuring. I will need to remove the passengers side taillight and take a couple quick measurements. Shouldn't take but maybe 15 minutes. I will come to you. In return, I will give you a harness that will shut your license plate lights off when the truck is in reverse after I iron out a few design details. You can see the one we did for the Tacoma here License plate light Disable while In Reverse (DIR) | Tacoma World I would really like to do this on Sunday if possible. Shoot me a message if interested, and thanks for reading!

What would be the purpose of shutting the lights off?

After looking through the thread he posted, it increases the clarity of the back up camera by reducing the glare from the license plate lights

I wondered the same thing and it states to cut down on glare for the backup camera at night.

I’ll have to try this as I have always tried to generate the most light possible to help the camera get a better picture.
So I use super bright LEDs in both the reverse lights and in the license plate lights.
The result has always been a better picture compare to the halogens they replaced.
However I never thought to remove the license plate light from the picture.

Guess, I’ll try it and see.

I like more light when backing up. Not getting much glare at all as is. Maybe a Taco thing with the bumper design?

When I back out of anywhere in the evening, I often switch lights off so I'm not getting this glare...it is a real annoyance! Looking forward to this coming out!

Yeah, the purpose is just to reduce glare and improve the clarity. It is a very small thing, but once you see the difference, it is night and day (pun intended :)). It is just a simple NC relay triggered by the reverse lights, nothing really fancy. Just trying to make it plug and play, so in the end there aren’t any vampire clips (I HATE those things!) and it is a one stop solution, and easy to install.

More light is always preferable. It may be the design on the Tacoma’s, but the light from the license plates really is an annoyance. If you want more light though, hotshot Offroad sells a complete Meso customs hitch pod light. There will be plug and play reverse taps for the Tundra soon as well. Makes a huge difference. Hit up @memario1214 and you will have all the light you’ll ever need :)

It may be a Tacoma thing, I’ve never paid too much attention to the Tundras I guess. But I’m pretty much every truck, the reverse camera sits in the tailgate up high, usually by the handle. Where the license plate is lit from the sides. So some of that light works it’s way to that camera. Getting rid of that direct light helps the camera make use of the other light that is shining on the ground behind the truck. I would be really surprised if this didn’t make a difference.

If you upgraded your OEM lights to a LED type, that's when I noticed the biggest change in visibility when backing up...the license plate lights throw some non-directed light and it glares on the camera to screen...when I shut my lights off and reverse out, the image is MUCH more clear. This is a great update for those who may have upgraded their license plate lights to LED...

x 3 - upgraded license plate bulbs to LED. I also turn off headlights when backing up at night and failed to realize that doing so actually turns off plate bulbs. I just thought the lights just dimmed the radio screen for whatever reason and when I turn them off it got super bright and clear. I'm not a smart man. Count on me purchasing this when you get it dialed in.
