Given we have a what did you pay for it page and reading through multiple posts of members getting impressive resale/ trade in values...

I’ve been pondering the value of my truck. I had an interesting experience at a RAM dealer this weekend and obviously I’m not buying a TRX @ $110k lol.

But it did get me thinking...my landlady is thinking about selling my house to me. She’s 78 no kids and owns the house free n clear.
To qualify for conventional mortgage I’d have to summon $60k in addition to current assets to scrape the $100k deposit together. Which really has me thinking...

In current market what price $$$$$...$? Would you sell my (or your)
    Tundra ?

Mods. To be clear I’m not selling my truck or “testing waters” I’m just looking for feedback.

You touched on the main point for me, what would you replace it with... currently, there isn’t a replacement out there for my tundra. I don’t want a diesel, I don’t like any other 1/2 ton out there... and I need a truck... If I didn’t need a truck, as dumb as it sounds, I would love to have a sequoia, there is something sexy about a lifted sequoia

Sounds like too awesome a truck to sell.

Blue book your truck’s value, then add 25 % of the value of all your mods.

Probably get the most money, by swapping Back to factory parts & selling mods separately.

Mine is a SR5 TSS Off Road with the SR5 upgrade package and a few other extras (bed liner, gun safe, etc). Sticker was $48,500. I added protective film to front ($500), tonneau cover ($700) and a bed mat ($125). It has only 2400 miles. $50k sounds about right. And yeah, I would sell it for that today!

I think you could get $50k with the right buyer. Mid to upper 40’s would be a quick sale IMO assuming the truck is in like new condition.

Got my 2016 used, back in Jan 2020, before the Covid impacts on shipping, manufacturing, etc. Got an amazing deal and while I could sell it for many thousands more than I paid, truck prices have also gone way up so there is no benefit. Add the fact that my truck is a good one, looks and runs well, has what I want on it, I would not be able to replace it unless I wanted to spend a lot more.....and whatever I purchased my not be a good and reliable as what I have now.

In same boat... if I got rid of the Tundra, the Sequoia would be my only other choice, but I would lose too much functionality in the process since I still need a truck. Always subject to change in future I guess.

Great truck, but buying that house sounds like a no brainer to me. You can always replace the truck later, but swapping a rent payment for a mortgage payment is the smart choice. The owner could theoretically sell to someone else who wants to live there, so it's possible that you would need to move. That seems like a greater hassle than replacing a vehicle.

I'd do the house, personally. Tough choice but finding the right house is FAR harder than finding the right truck, and usually more expensive as well.

I refinanced my truck a few months ago.. it's a 17 Sr5 with 115k miles on it. It was appraised for $36k. I bought it 4 years ago for $44k.

So, I say at least $50k for it being a Platinum and the low mileage.

I was at my local dealer this morning getting my '19 serviced and talking with the sales manager, whom I know. He told me he didn't have the time to explain everything and how crazy it is in the car market right now and that he couldn't find me a tundra, tacoma or Rav4 if I wanted one. He was willing to write me a check for mine on the spot but being a sales guy he wouldn't give me a number :D.

I had the exact same concern. What would I replace it with, and like you, I need a truck. The Tundra is the only one that is reliable enough to be my only vehicle. If I didn't need a truck and was going to sell my side by sides, so I had nothing to tow, I'd probably be back into a dual vehicle situation with another WRX and a small SUV. I miss my WRX and my Renegade sometimes.

In reality, the only way I'd give up my current truck would be if I could get into to a Windchill Pearl one and have it be a 100% lateral move on the debt. That's not possible, so I'll love the truck I've got!

Sold my 2019 for $5300 more than I paid 2 years ago and bought a 2021. I moved all my mods over and returned the old back to stock.

I'd be trying to get a low mileage unmolested 2017 WRX. I don't like the changes they made after that, but liked the fixes they did from the 2016 to the 2017. It's the perfect year for me. I don't have to have a hatch back for space. I just like the Renegade for going places the car couldn't.

Problem with selling is you’ll need to replace your inflated Turd with another inflated Turd. Situation breakeven which equals keep it, unless you have the Magic Ball that has perfect market timing.

I got my new Turd for $2k less than MSRP. It was the only one of about a hundred I looked at that were less than MSRP and just happened to be what I was looking for.

Its all about priorities and options.

For most people - a home is a priority over a vehicle. Ownership of your home gives you an asset that typically remains stable or increases over time. Rent gives you flexibility - but no real equity.

A car is typically number 2 for most people. Pride of ownership, reliable transportation and a store of value. Yes - it depreciates over time...but well maintained used holds value.

In the OP case - sell a truck to qualify for a "conventional" mortgage - whats the difference between conventional and what you could qualify for now? If it's more than a percent rate wise - answer is simple...sell the truck. That % in rate will easily outweigh the price of any new truck in 6 years.

Would I sell a truck I liked - just to have to replace it in xx months...depends on how uncommon the truck is and how good the offer was. Most half ton short bed trucks are relatively easy to replace - now if I had something special I needed - like a utility bed...that's going to be harder to replace.

Think how much worse off your life was before owning the vehicle you are pondering selling...if things weren't made appreciably better - there's a clear sign you will be safe in selling and not regretting it.

That's pretty logical. If it would let me build the house that I want to build tomorrow, I would grudgingly sell my truck and get an older used truck. If it would let me buy a house from somebody else that is going to have all kinds of required maintenance and make me house poor for the first 5-8 years getting it patched up, no go. It'd have to be the house I want, because I already have the truck I want. I'm willing to sacrifice, but I'm not willing to settle. Especially when breaking the 5 figure mark on a purchase, let alone a 6 figure one.

If I was selling at an inflated price, just to buy another truck (TRX etc) at a ridiculously inflated price. I’d be too embarrassed to post up here.

However, the chance to buy my home at a fair price in this crazy housing market is driving me to seriously consider doing this. The only other truck I would realistically get is...another Tundra. Probably the “2202” model.

Fwiw, Ram dealer offered $46k trade in. Caravana/Vroom is offering $44-46.7k.
I have a company vehicle which I use for work and quick shopping/gym/grocery runs.
Hence my 2017 with super low miles.

Housing everywhere is so difficult right now - and moving is an additional cost.

Glad we bought and renovated this year. Yes..it cost $$ and forced us to rent for 6 months while we did the work...but at the same time got the house for less total than we would have paid post reno, controlled the changes ourselves and had 0 competition.

Selling our house we had 11 offers to pick from - granted 2 of them turned out to be overbids trying to negotiate down - but in the end we cleared our original ask and doubled what we paid 5 years ago - with only minor renovation done.

For shitz and giggles I contacted the dealer that sold me my ‘19 Platinum to see what they would give me for it. I have just 2,000 miles on it and have added a spray in Bullet Liner and Truxedo Sentry CT roll up bed cover. The dealer has no new or used Tundras. They offered me what I paid for it, which was $46k. I thought hmmmmm......So I contacted CarMax and they offered me $52,375 which is $3,000 more than the total I have in the truck, including sales tax and the $1,600 in accessories. BUT THEN WHAT IS OUT THERE TO BUY? Definitely a Catch 22 situation.

Have a 2019 TRD sport 4x4. $4,000 in mods. Paid $42K, it would take $65K for me to sell. No less or keep it because I love it.

Replacement costs are out of whack, so I will keep what I have unless it's a dump truck load of cash... that's something to ponder.
