Hi all, I'm on the fence about a 2014 Tundra Limited with 85K miles (5.7L). I have a 25' bumper pull travel trailer that weighs about 5500 lbs when loaded.

Honestly, how well will a Tundra tow a trailer like mine? I will be using a hitch leveler and sway bar. I'm not worried about fuel mileage, because I know it won't be great--I'm more concerned about ride stability and climbing power (but I won't be climbing anything too crazy).

I just haven't owned a bumper pull trailer for years and before I pull the trigger on this truck, I'd like to hear your opinion.

Answer fast, before someone else buys the truck!! Thanks!

It has more than enough power for that load, and it looks like you'll be within your payload ratings.

The Tundra is a heavy truck compared to other half tons. It will be more stable than these super lightweight half tons towing the same load.

Welcome from LA (Lower Alabama)! That is about 60% of the typical Tundra towing capacity. You really should not have any issues with it.

Thank you for quick replies! Follow up question for all of you: the owner has taken really good care of this truck and kept up with oil changes, but I don't think he's kept up on the transfer case or differential fluids. Is that a huge deal in your opinion?

Night and day difference with my old Taco. That Taco would cry when hooked up. I now like going the speed limit up hill. 5000lbs total, single axel trailer.

I believe the transfer case and differentials are supposed to be every 30k. Do you know for sure that it hasn’t been done? Was he doing the maintenance himself or was he taking it somewhere? If he happened to use the dealer for maintenance you could stop by any Toyota dealership with the VIN# and get the records.

Yeah, he had the dealership do all of the work while it was under warranty or part of free maintenance agreement. If we get serious, I'll get the VIN and do just that.

When I bought my Tundra it had 20k on it and no maintenance on the Carfax report. Went to my local dealer and got the report showing all of the on-time oil changes. Since the dealership was doing the maintenance it would seem likely to be close to the required intervals.

In my opinion this is the perfect sized trailer for a Tundra. Get much bigger you will start to run into payload overage issues.

Surprised no one has mentioned how nice the 4.30 rear end is for towing.

I would not worry about it. When I owned Fords the recommended mileage was 100k. My Fords did not have drain plugs only fill. I changed T case fluid on my last Tacoma at 50k and it looked brand new. I change diff fluids on Tundra but will not mess with the T case. I might have a 500 miles on it with 4wd engaged.

They tow great and I don’t watch the mileage gauge as towing our Rpod is the Tundra’s mission. The Rpod weighs 4,500 loaded and the hitch weight is around 560/570. Pulled it 900 miles without a stabilizer hitch and one is not needed. Had Chevy Z71 half tons before and I like how the Tundra is not front heavy.

My Lance 2285 weighs about the same as yours OP and no issues.....even without a transmission cooler. But there again I have only towed in Ohio...no mountains here. I am sure you will be fine.
