Sluggish TRD PRO

Base story:
I had a 2018 Tundra Sr5 TSS 4x4 I never really drove it hard but it had quick pick-up when you step on the gas. I had the stock OEM 20" rims that came with the truck and also the BFG KO2's that it came with from the dealer.

Current story:
I have a 2021 Lunar Rock TRD Pro and I was careful driving it home just like any ordinary person driving their brand new vehicle home making sure nothing happens to it on the way home. Now, my wife says it feels sluggish and slow compared to the 2018 Sr5.

Only thing I changed:
285/70/18 Nitto Ridge Grapplers with OEM TRD Pro rims

Reason I ask is that, in my previous life, I had a BMW X5 and I was told that whenever you take the battery off, it would re-learn your driving habits again and how heavy your foot is etc. Does that also pertain to trucks or any other vehicle?

Any wise input would be much appreciated.

 

It’s the tires. Bigger, heavier. Those KO2s on your previous truck were probably smaller and lighter I’m assuming. Your truck would feel a lot better with some 4.88 gears. I do think the truck learns your driving habits, the shift points from what I can tell seem to change the most.

 

All you need to do is press the "Haul Ass" (tow haul) button, and she will light up the back tires. My 19 Pro feels pretty quick without hitting the button. But, I am running the stock Michelin tires.

 

I'm on 35x12.5 KM3s and all you need is the boogie button pressed and it gets to work...

Somewhat off topic so sorry, but is the 0-60 MPH time less with the tow/haul mode engaged?...feels like it could be, but I've never checked.

 

I had the same sluggish experience after swapping to bigger tires too.

A Pedal Commander solved it.

 

Im considering this now myself. I just put some 295/70/18 on my 2018 Platinum and can def tell a difference. I still haven't had a chance to install my Hypertech speedo calibrator, from what I've gathered, that should correct my shift points a little as well?

 

Never really noticed mine being sluggish…hell, it feels more responsive when i get on it than my 2008 did before I traded it. The 2008 (297k miles) always drive and ran great, but my ‘21 just feels more connected to the road to me.

as for the Hypertech, i don’t know the technical answer, but to me it sure seemed like the shift points were more in line with what they had been before I upside the tires. It definitely got the speedo/odo back in line.

 

My 2020 TRD Pro Tundra with 295/70/18 ridge grapplers felt sluggish at first compared to my 2018 TSS tundra with 285/65/18. I added a TRD cold air intake and it made a difference in my opinion and it sounds more aggressive. You will eventually get used to it.

 

Supercharge it, if you or your wife drove a BMW in your previous life.

 

My "Pedal Commander" is my foot, never understood why you need something else?

Honestly - I picked one up used because the price was right and I wanted to form my own opinion.

My verdict - it’s not worth the $$ for my driving style - ymmv.

 

Agree. My ‘21 drives exactly the same as my ‘19 with one exception: mpg is significantly lower.

 

I just ordered the same tires for my lunar rock pro. You are making me regret that decision lol.

 

My 2014 had much more pep than my 2020. I think that Toyota played with the torque management to keep the traction from coming on so much. Just my opinion.
