Just watched a video of thieves capturing someone's fob signal and replicating it into a new fob and taking the truck during the night. One guy posted here about his truck being stolen too. Not worried on my end because mine is so old, but with the shortage of Tundras, what are you doing to protect your Tundra?

I've heard of this before, and only use the fob to unlock at public places (leaving) but never to lock. I suppose there is really no way to prevent that sort of thing other than to use key only and never the fob.

There's only so much you can do. There's always turds out there.

So am I good if I never use the fob and only use the smart handles?

No. Totally pissed me off. Traveling to STL was great because I met you and you took the shell off my hands, but otherwise I would have traveled 40 miles each way just for the Best Buy tech to tell me he isn't trained on my Fob choice. He made me another appointment in a month at the south county location. So that'll be 7 weeks, 100+ miles and two days off work to have it installed. If you sell a product, you should be able to tell the customer where they need to have it installed it at

it was the fob signal to start the vehicle, not necessarily to unlock the doors. Apparently fobs are CONSTANTLY sending signals to your truck whether you are pressing the button or not

That's crazy, but I've seen this happening in alot of places.. a big one was a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited someone climbed in with a laptop and took it... coincidentally, I unlocked and locked a mid 90s Camry with my key fob, so odds are your transponder may be hanging out in some late 90s Avalon..

I'm fortunate to live in a low crime area. I can't choose my neighbors, but they are really awesome. And, we look out for each other.

I park my truck in a locked garage every night. And the truck is locked.

I have a dog that barks when she hears an unusual sound.

    Remington 870 at my bedside

If everything else fails, I have insurance.

    Thieves suck!

I park it and lock it.

My insurance can worry about theft.

That’s harder to do on the 2020/21 that don’t have a “key”. Fob activated push button start and touch keyless entry. :spy:

Wow, I didn't realize they went away with the key entirely. I don't think I would like that.

There is still a key inside the fob for the tailgate and it will work in the door to lock/unlock if the battery is dead. It’s not something that is easy enough to pull out every time you want it. Most won’t pull it out to lock or unlock the truck when they can just touch the handle and push a button. :D

I actually keep my fob in a Faraday pouch due to this. It works great I can't even start the truck or open doors with it in the pouch. Thieves can steal your code from up to 200 yards away without you knowing and they put on a spare key fob. Now they have the key to open your door and start it. I highly recommend this. This is the one that I use if interested. It's kinda a pain in da butt but It's a cheap investment.

    Such an avoidable problem

I guess I don't see the big deal about using an actual key to start your car.

I try to put the fob in battery saver mode if feel unsafe, turns off constant RF transmission to the vehicle. If you hold the lock button then press unlock two times, it blinks the red light three times.

Do people still do kill switches? Or like the mad max sequence to start it or it blows up?

Fuel pump kill switch. Truck will start for them, then die out shortly after.

ignition kill is usually easy to find. Fuel pump they won’t know where to look

I feel like a car thief isn’t gonna spend a lot of time trying to diagnose why a car won’t start. Who knows though

Thieves use signal boosters to unlock and start the car. Here is an example:

Remote start with drone mobile. I get notifications for when it's on or off. Set a curfew for it. SR5 Sport trim with key ignition. Although, does anyone ever wonder if AVS/WeatherTech rain guards also deters theft for slim jim or the lock pickers?

I was always partial to the brake lock. That and the fuel cutoff should deter most thieves.

These are worth having. The better the theft deterrent the harder it'll be imo.
