I picked this up a few months back, it was on a neighbors curb with a free sign. I figured I could use it to store my drills or something in my garage. It has holes in the back, in the lid, and holes with grommets on one side. Inside walls have some insulating pads attached, about 1/8" thick. Any idea what it is besides a cool box?

That is a BII (Basic Issued Items) box that comes from a M1083A3P2 5 Ton LMTV.

I was thinking maybe a communications box or first aid kind of thing. I don't think an ammo box would have holes but the construction is similar.

Thats oddly specific but I trust you. So basically a storage box from a truck? The insulation lining and holes made me think it may be from a truck of some kind, rattle prevention. That makes sense, thanks.

Yes, mainly a storage box. But to add some context, that box would normally go behind the driver or passenger seat on the LMTV. I have seen units mount commo equipment on top and route the wires through the holes you show on the second picture. Its a cool little box, definitely used for many things.
