Replaced a transmission?

Who has had to replace a transmission in their Tundra? My wife doubts my truck's ability to last. I currently have just over 160K miles and in her mind that means it's just about dead. She's telling me that surely I'm going to sell the truck instead of replacing a transmission, in which I would easily just get a transmission because it would be cheaper than a new vehicle. Mind you our last vehicle was a Town & Country minivan which had notorious transmission problems. Who here has had to replace their transmission and how many miles did you have on your vehicle at that time?

2002 Tundra here. Transmission replaced at 84k miles.

In the early days of the tundras there were a few batches of Transmissions that were "short" by about half an inch. The driveshaft didn't seat all the way inside the end of the transmission, and there was a little slop because of this.

This caused the tail of the transmission to wallow around after some wear, and tear. (About 80k miles.) Eventually the front of the driveshaft fell out because the transmission had been wallered out so much.

Internally, the transmission was fine, and I believe it would still be in my truck today if it were the proper length.

Based on my research it only seemed to effect the 5TB first gens. (First three of Vin.) There was a recall which we didn't know about, and we had our transmission replaced at a local mechanics shop with a jasper transmission. (I can't remember the name of the Recall offhand.)

    340k miles now.

I replaced the transmission on an 01 Sequoia at ~175k. Drove it another 75k before trading her in.

2016 287k original tranny lots of hard towing. I've been changing fluid every 40k.
I can feel the shifts aren't as smooth as a less worn out truck. I drove my buddy's 2017 with 160k and it was like a totally different truck, smooth shifting and tight steering but I abuse my truck daily.
Your truck is just broken in as is mine.

An expert who works on these trucks everyday says to change trans oil every 60k miles and you won't need to drop the pan. According to him he hasn't seen many that need a replacement when following this regimen.

Has there been any service on it? Flush ( not recommended) or drain & fills? Is it functioning well now?
It could very well go for double your mileage or more.
I would get a drain & fill done if maintenance is unknown. If fluid looks questionable, maybe a few drain and fills to freshen up the fluid.

It's just she's never owned a vehicle that you can trust at this mileage. Our last 3 vehicles didn't make it to my mileage before they had serious issues

It is a mindset for many. My FIL won't drive a vehicle past 100k miles, just too much to go wrong - he says.

Yeah I wouldn’t trust any of those vehicles at that mileage either.

    OP,
I am not sure if I have ever heard of a transmission in a gen2 or 3 Tundra just go out very fast. Most experience some kind of slipping or hard shifting or noticeable feel. In many cases are driven for a while and in many cases are serviceable by a good transmission shop.

12 years ago … 2000 SR5 TRD was at 125K on I5 in Portland in heavy traffic when the transmission decided to take a dump. Was very stressful.

I was not in a position to replace the vehicle so replaced the transmission. Ran great after that, up until I saw a 2007 I just had to have …

Interesting to read about the issue with the 1st gens up in the thread. I had just chalked it up to the prior owner towing a boat everywhere and me using it as a working truck pulling trailers, etc. Also, had the vehicle serviced at the Vancouver toyota dealership and was talked into a transmission flush. I’ve since heard that sometimes doesn’t end well. Perhaps a combination of factors. Definitely a learning experience.

The transmission on my 2010 went out at around 59k miles. It was replaced under warranty with a remanufactured one. That one was replaced at around 115k miles after I traded it in (I get carfax emails still for that vin every time the new owner has work done).

I purchased my 2007 when it had 270,000 and it's about to roll past 300,000 on the original everything. I do drive in S4, shifting into S5 & S6 as needed, but I am always in S4 when I am stopped -- never in D. My former wife was a lot like a Town & Country van, I traded her in for the 2007 Tundra and life is good.

Really odd that one truck went through two transmissions that quick.

The up shift from 4th to 5th can be crude if left in D, and the computer will needlessly hunt for higher gears at the worst possible time if left in D.
