Had an appointment to get my drop-in liner removed and the bed coated with Line-X this week. Got a call from the installer, who said that he had located “wax“ under the drop-in liner, which would prohibit him from spraying the Line-X on. I drove out there, and found what looks like a heavy coat of automotive wax that someone had apparently laid on under the bed liner. (Don’t know if this was factory or not.). Line-X Guy said that he tried to wipe it off using a variety of solvents, to include denatured alcohol, with no effect. Told me I would have to get it removed if I wanted the Line-X applied.

Anyone ever seen anything like this before? Not sure if this is something I can just scrub off with some elbow grease, or will need to use some type of chemical to get results. Any and all advice or suggestions welcome.

Definitely not from the factory. It looks like some did that as a rust preventative since drop in liners move and rub. I would try something like Simple Green on a rag and see if it comes off. If it still appears that it will be difficult to remove, I would call a body shop and see what they say. They have a lot of those "secret squirrel" chemicals.

Wow. PO did a good job tho. I would say, take it to the body shop too. They would know the best way to remove it.

I thought they go over everything with a scuffing pad or sandpaper first. So I would probably attempt to use that or even some water and a scotch bright. Also looks like you have a little rust on the driver side wheel well.

I'm a little surprised they can't figure out a way of prepping the bed for the application.

Hot water through pressure washer might do it.

Try Automotive “wax and grease” remover? wax is a MF to completly remove. Maybe warm it with heat gun to get the majority of it off?

I have had great success with starting fluid to remove marks such as when a plastic cart swipes your door. Spray a small patch on a rag and wipe the surface. I did not seem to harm the paint. Believe me, my wife would have let me know if it did.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think I’m going to head to the car was and hit it with the pressure hose first, just to see if it will loosen anything up. Then switch to Scotch Brite and degreaser if necessary. Not too worried about damaging the paint, as it’s rescheduled for Line-X Monday.

Yeah, I was a bit surprised that the Line-X guy didn’t just handle it himself, but I guess his schedule was pretty tight and he didn’t have the extra time available without impacting other jobs.

The rust spot isn’t as bad as it looks. Mostly surface rust where the old liner rubbed in that corner. Line-X guy says it’ll clean right up and get covered over.

So the car wash sprayer was largely ineffective, although to be fair, this was pretty much the Worst Car Wash in the World©️ Headed down to Lowe’s and loaded up on supplies. Tomorrow will be a day of reckoning. FE7D9151-86DF-408B-BF30-6B3CBA672743.jpg

It looks like latex paint TravisJr
    Is it tacky?
Find a body shop and ask someone for a lacquer thinner rag and see if that breaks it down. That’s where I would start if you showed up at mine.

Not tacky. I’ve got some paint thinner, xylene, and maybe even a little MEK in the workshop. One way or another, that stuff’s coming off tomorrow.

So success! Got lucky and tried that aerosol Goof Off first. Everything pretty much wiped off once that was applied. Took a little elbow grease, and the Goof Off left its own residue which I had to clean up with a dry rag, but overall it was pretty painless. Took me about an hour. Paid another visit to The World’s Worst Car Wash and scrubbed out the bed with the foaming brush just to clean out any chemical residue. Can’t see any way it won’t meet Line-X spec come Monday. 5CE17431-7877-4204-B12C-B798353F2BEE.jpg016FB9FE-1C9A-42CB-8B22-C5ECAEE512FD.jpg

How much is line-x going to set you back for? Curious. I thought line-x basically grinds off bed paint and applies its magic coat to protect your bed. Is it just a coating over paint?

They use a sanding wheel and scuff up the entire surface than apply the magic coat. Depends on location and if you want the primo. Usually around $599.

He quoted me $550 for the premium. Could’ve saved $100 by going to the regular without the UV protectant. I don’t know what’s involved with the prep on their end. I would assume they do some kind of roughing/priming to make it bond, but I don’t know the details. Guy was just very concerned that it wouldn’t adhere properly over that wax coat.

Got it back today. Very happy with the upgrades. Classed it up a bit with the Charvonia tie downs. 8B116603-9C4B-4020-8625-A8FFD1FFDDB3.jpg2F7542BD-5E06-476A-92F7-BBF4197C3657.jpg
