"Rumors persist that the third-generation full-size Tundra, expected to debut later this year, will be among those vehicles."

"It is not immediately clear if any of these new all-electric or hybridized trucks will carry the BZ moniker."

Its been rumored a Hybrid Tundra is planned but its been drowned out by talk of the TTV6. The specs for some of the hybrids looked good but well have to see how hybrids hold up doing truck duty things like towing and offroading

Off roading I doubt you'd notice much from the engine itself. Towing the F150 hybrid is more powerful, but the 5.0 and 3.5 are powerful enough that there's no significant improvement in towing - and they all use the same amount of fuel in near identical test. The area hybrids are most noticed is in city driving. The stop go kills V8 fuel efficiency, same for most V6TT users since they get into the boost, but the electric boost keeps fuel mileage in the city much closer to highway mileage - the F150 hybrid is rated 24 MPG city 24 MPG highway while the 5.0 is rated 16 city and 22 highway.

The question is will Toyota advance on the hybrid tech like they do on their other vehicles or do they just match the F150.

I have full confidence whatever Toyota decides to put under that hood and in their transmissions will still be better than any domestic. My biggest thing is change the way it looks inside and out. If all of this fails for them at least some of us will still have the V8 reputable truck that’s dominated in reliability and resale value.

@belanger9 Range has been an issue with towing and offroading on some EVs, I've not seen anyone do extensive towing with a hybrid, I guess the hybrid highlander would be a good place to find information for this.

This is my sentiment as well. Toyota knows what they are doing and are conservative in their offerings.

EVs are purely an engineering problem. Toyota is one of the best companies out there to advance the truck segment with electric motors. My guess is they'll do it right and the improvements will be impressive.

I really hope they have a hybrid option for the Tundra. Toyota hybrids are the best of the bunch. A friend of mine had a Prius with near 400k that was still netting 45+ mpg on the original battery. EV would be great too. My only gripe with my Tundra is the gas mileage. Improve that and its the perfect truck.

    Well spoken, sir.

The historical trend of measuring the Tundra's payload is in grams. This will help with the payload vs. range shock inherent with eevies.

If I were a betting man I would say they will exceed expectations; it is an opportunity to grab a larger market share for a few years.

Also didn't this gen Tundra debut with the highest payload and towing numbers?

Hybrids obviously won't have range issues. TFLTruck has a few videos of real world testing the F150 hybrid towing. That's where I got all my info from since they've also done the same test with the 3.5 EB and 5.0.

If Toyota goes EV with the Tundra it won't be doing so as a workhorse - weight just kills the range. Engineering Explained on Youtube did a great video on why that is when the Cybertruck was announced. Every time it's brought up so many people just say why don't they do a trailer with batteries? Well by doing the math to get the range of current 1/2 tons while towing you need a trailer that weighs 12k lbs of batteries. So at this point EV's and towing are significantly behind current pickups. And based on a real world test of the F150 the hybrid does not improve fuel mileage either.

I'm in this boat too. It's why I can see the Tundra being rated at over 30 MPG if that's their main target.

@belanger9 Thanks for that, I'll have to check TFLTrucks test on the Ford hybrid, MPG dips are expected. Their Model X video was illuminating; possible new tech has reduced the EV towing issues. The weight is certainly a factor, I haven't seen much talk on the materials side of their designs but Toyota is very disciplined about leaks.

EE is probably one of the best automotive channels out there.

Bought a 2020 last January so I'm only 1.3 years in to my 15 year plan. Maybe in 13.7 years I will look at the fuel cell Tundra

It seems to me that technology will limit the mods a person can do to their vehicle without violating the terms of the warranty. I am glad I got in before all the tech changes.

It seems so crazy to me when looking at the 5.0 hybrid and the current Tundra 5.7 we're talking about a couple of miles per gallon city. The amount of R&D and cost thrown into the hybrid engine for such a minimal increase makes me feel like we've reached the limit with combustible engines, for trucks at least.

13 years from now it'll be the same truck and engine with a face-lift.

We're definitely very close to the reasonable limit of the power/fuel economy balance. Could be a boring bunch of years for those of us who want vehicles that can do 500 km road trips at the drop of a hat.

If they were using fuel cells or some kind of mechanically replaceable battery packs that could be swapped in under 5-10 minutes then it would be sweet.

but having to wait for a battery to charge is a sure fire downer on a long trip.

We’re going to regress back to the 1800s when no one traveled more than 20 miles from where they were born if we all go ev

I'm sure the same types of folks said that about their horses when the model t came out. I cant imagine having a machine that needs to be refueled. My horse has fuel everywhere it goes. Technology always has neigh-sayers (pun intended). New tech will not send us backwards lol. If it can't compete it will not be part of our future.

I really don't want an EV Tundra. But, if every Toyota dealer put in a free charging station you could plan a trip stopping at the dealers on the way.

Speculative article...there might be a Tundra EV or hybrid announced later this year. Last year they said the new Tundra would be revealed at this year's Superbowl. I don't watch intramural sports like that, but I heard that didn't take place.

Another comment from the cheap seats...you know how some Tacomas are fitted with snorkels for river crossings. Anybody want to try that with a plug-in electric? Not me.

Regarding going back 120 years or so to when no one went more than 20 miles away(because that was a reasonable 1-day trip on horseback), the deal was you could go to almost every town in the country on a train then for trips over 20 miles. You could go from Hickville, IN to Hickville, KS easy. You can't even go from Kansas City to Denver on a train, now.

    Sorry to complain.
