Installed my power tailgate lock yesterday. Took about an hour. Works great and is not loud.
Thanks Roman for the kit and instructions.
    Very easy install.

Glad I found this thread, I thought it was odd the only reason i have to carry a key is for the tailgate on a ‘20 1794. With all the other features they have I just assumed the tailgate would lock with the doors

Quick question. I have factory auto start. If I install a tailgate lock, when I use the autostart, will I hear 3 thumps before the autostart?

No, you'd only hear once as it locks. Once locked it'll "trigger" two more times, but already locked it wont move and give the "thump"

Does it tie into the alarm system at all, or is it just an electronic lock.

It's just an actuator that moves the physical tailgate lock. It's looped into the existing door locks, so I'd imagine it's part of the alarm system to some degree - though not the glass break alarm or anything like that.

Installed this yesterday afternoon. I bought the "short bed" model for my DC, fit was perfect. Install was SUPER easy without issue. I highly recommend this mod.

Where did you buy it from? Think link at the beginning of the thread said the store is closed.

EDIT: disregard. I found another dealership that sold the part for slightly cheaper. I just ordered it!

As someone looking to buy a Tundra, I'm shocked to learn that the truck doesn't already come with something like this. Even the new ones?

Yes. I have a brand new Limited. The thing about Toyota Trucks is they aren’t as innovative and fancy (other than the only trucks to have a rear window that goes down) as other manufacturers but you can’t beat their quality. I think this guys post sums is up best.

Yeah, I read that post last night. However I wouldn't consider an actuator for a rear tailgate novel or fancy.

min reality it is. How necessary is it? Most people keep their bed open so having an auto lock is a silly luxury.

@Roman the link to Springs Toyota shows the lock is for a ‘20. Will this same part number work for a ‘18? Thank you for posting all the great info!

Anyone know if Roman’s link for the ‘20 OEM power tailgate lock from Toyota will work for a 2018? The title for the thread says 2018, but the product in the link says 2020. Just want to be sure it will work. Thank you!

You can get them preinstalled as a “port-installed” option or buy it and install yourself.

Where other manufacturers have dozens of different options and packages when configuring a truck (to the point you can basically configure a base model to be the same as a top tier trim), Toyota has very few “packages” of specific extras for each trim level and then a pile of accessories that you can add. And my experience with pricing other brands is that adding up those options very quickly gets me north of a comparable or only slightly “less-equipped” Tundra that I’ve had longstanding reliability with already.

And I’ve got to agree with DMV - it really is a first world luxury. I had my ‘08 for 7 years without one, then installed a pop-n-lock brand one (no factory kit existed for the gen 2) only to have it crap out after 9 months and I didn’t bother replacing it. And I had a hard cover on my truck to boot... using the key just wasn’t a problem and it also meant that I knew that the tailgate was ALWAYS locked unless I physically unlocked it (especially after the pop-n-lock started to fail and I had to check it manually every time anyway).

That said, I did order one for my new truck, but buying it afterwards and installing it myself will cost me 1/3 of what the sticker add-on is for it. So I’m good with that, and enjoy getting to tinker with it in the process. I’m going to add bed lights at the same time, and plan on re-looming both harnesses together before I install along with adding a secondary switch in the bed with OEM connectors because I geek out on that sort of stuff.

They are offered “officially” as a factory accessory on the 20+ trucks, which would be why the website states that. In the very first post on this thread, Roman specifically states they show to be for the 18+ trucks. There are also at least one post in this thread (page 2) by an owner of an ‘18 stating it worked in their truck, and a couple of pre-18 owners as well. You should be good to go...

Okay, so those of you who installed the OEM lock with the existing OEM cargo bed light option- was it successful and any issues to watch out for? I'm about to order from Sparksparts, but says in the description that it conflicts with cargo lighting. I attached the description from the site. Sparksparks didn't know what the conflict is. Thank you guys

The issue (from what I’ve read) is that both kits are designed to run through the same grommet/seal in the floor of the cab. So the bed lights are already running through that spot and you’re going to have to feed and seal the tailgate lock wires through the same one.

I have both kits enroute to me right now. My plan is to re-loom them together before I do my install, and I’m also going to modify the bed lights kit to add a secondary switch that mounts in the bed up high on the back stake pocket. But if you’ve already got the bed lights installed you’ll have to probably de-pin the connector on the lock harness to feed it up through the grommet.

I added both the power tailgate lock and bed lights, bought from Toyota. The floor grommet is designed for one wiring harness to pass through. I cut a slit for the second harness and sealed it up. Worked out just fine and love both mods.

It was a pretty easy, straight forward install. I followed the advice of others here and put sound deadener in the tailgate. Not sure how much of a difference it makes.

I didn’t install any sound deadener, and I don’t really notice any sound unless I’m right at the tailgate and listening for it.

The instructions that came with it were clear and easy to follow. I found it helpful to drop the spare tire just to make it easier to work in the back when finishing up the last of the routing and tidying up the connection. Also, if you’ve never pulled the footwell kick panels in the cab, getting the upper clip out of the body (it is behind the ground point) so that you can put it back into the kick panel for reinstall can be a little bit of a pain. I don’t remember if the instructions were very clear on that, but if you don’t get the white clip out and then install it back into the kick panel before reinstalling the kick panel, you’ll never get the top part of the kick panel to sit right.

I installed the OEM tail gate lock this morning. I followed the instructions that Roman provided and thanks for that, and it is as others here have said. Plug 'n Play. The CM and DC both use the same harness (PK3B6-34JS0). I don't think I can offer much not already stated. There is plenty of room behind the passenger side kick panel for tucking the harness plugs and fuses. When removing the kick panel, the white fasteners want to stay attached to the truck. I used a fork shaped trim removal tool to pull those and reattached to the kick panel. That makes replacing the kick panel simple. Thanks for the help.

Can anyone that has this installed let me know if it works with the remote only? Or does it also tie in with the power lock switch in the cab? I'd like to install one, but I'd hate to have something valuable stored in the back (under Diamondback HD) only to have someone smash in a side window, hit the power lock switch, and have the tailgate unlocked too...

You dont know how great it is until you have it. It's a relatively cheap mod. You wont regret it.

Easy ... hardest part was removing the white clips stuck behind the kickpanel.

Just installed in a 2015 Crewmax, short bed version worked perfectly. Functions as it should, would imagine this will work for any 2014+.
