The tires are the least of your problems trying to tow a fifth wheel with a halfton, especially a Tundra. I'd recommend checking out the payload of the truck vs the pin weight of the trailer. There are a few other threads on this already.

I believe that. Most people are just going to go by what the manual says.

Realistically a 30’ 5th wheel will put your total payload WAY over the ratings. I know that wasn’t your question but it is a safety issue for your family and everyone you share the road with. Obviously the choice is up to you and the liability you are willing to take if something does happen.

If you continue to haul a large 5th wheel with a Tundra I would hope your tires would be E rated.

Thank you all for the input. I guess I'll be purchasing a bigger truck or a smaller fifth wheel.

Good idea! I would recommend getting a different truck. I loved my 2017 Tundra Offroad until I started looking into towing a travel trailer. I would never have bought a Tundra had I known the payload limitations would be such an issue. Hard to believe. 1190 is what mine says. I can’t even find a truck camper that will be safe in my truck.

I love my Tundra, but I'd be looking at a different truck if I was in that position. In fact, I'm still contemplating getting a 1 ton SRW just for our 29ft bumper pull. The payload on the Tundra is really atrocious. It's within 250lbs of our Camry (door sticker to door sticker). I like the reliability of the Tundra (but I have had 2 recalls already on it and a possible TSB out) but am leaning towards having adequate tools for the job, and the Tundra just isn't it.

    High Five.

It is nice to see someone who appreciates a quality vehicle AND a quality camper. There are only about 6 different companies making trailers that will still be working in 50 years. This is one of them.

Hi, new here and hoping for some recommendations. Has anyone installed an b&w flip ball gooseneck hitch on 5.5ft bed? If so how was the installation process? I’m exploring pulling a 27ft fifth wheel camper. The Camper is a 94 with mid to narrow front nose, the gvwr is 8700 and will travel much lighter. My concern is cab clearance? What if any fifth wheel to gooseneck adapters and or extensions has anyone tried or know of that’s had success? Thanks truck is 2019 sr5 2x4 crew max gvw will be around 6,000 pounds.

If you’re going to doll this you must have a sliding hitch. I have Pullrite auto slider. Won’t tow without it. And I have a long bed one ton.

How much is the pin weight? Payload will be an issue long before total trailer weight.

Pin weight is usually around 20% of gtw so if use the camper gvwr which is overstating pin weight would be 1,740lb max?? I estimate actual pin somewhere between 1,400-1,500 lbs. does that sound about right?

What is the cargo capacity of your truck? Post your door sticker.

So if your trailer weighs 6000 lbs and the pin weight is 20% of that, you have 280 lbs for all passengers and gear inside your truck, including any mods you've made to it.

Might be worthwhile weighing your truck to confirm that payload number but I think you'll be pushing it if not over your truck GVWR. I'd also be concerned about breaking my rear window if towing a fifth wheel with a short box. My wife's grandfather has an older fifth wheel and it only works with an 8 foot box.

Same here Cab clearance is my concern more than at weight. Trips would be mostly flat and not a high rate of speed. Reason for the post was to see if anyone has any experience with the combination of 5.5 bed and 5rs?? I’m exploring 2 options: 1 auto slide fifth wheel hitch (not a huge fan of leaving or reattaching the hitch) 2: B&w turnover ball hitch for the truck and hide a ball fifth wheel to goose adapter with offset) this would/should give additional cab clearance width and height if needed)

Sounds to me like you should also be concerned about weight. If you're tied to that trailer, probably a good idea to consider a 2500 with at least a 6.5 ft box.

Thanks for the advice. Def not tied to the camper, It was given to me to try out camping with the fam. Not interested in trading up trucks for a camper that will rarely get used and travel no more than 4 hours away maybe a couple times per year.

In that case, I'd look for a bumper pull that's 24 feet or less.

If the trailer is in good shape, there is a STRONG market for used trailers right now. I was offered $2500 more for my 2.5 year old Winnebago 2401RG than what I paid for it recently (no sale as I got it for the long haul and love the layout). You could always take that money and invest in a 20-24 foot trailer with bunkhouse if you have kids. You would still have some outgo on it odds are, but would better fit the truck. I would NOT look at a 5'er with any Tundra, although there are people that do it. The trailer selection you can use is very limited and usually you will have pranged your payload (which is abysmal on the Tundra anyway) with your pin hitch weight.

I bought my truck with a turnover ball already installed. My points:

-These trucks really aren’t great for heavy towing IMO due to the frame design. I was getting ALOT of frame flex towing with it. And that was with a low pin weight just around town.

-The PO towing with it completely wrecked the leaf springs. I had to buy new ones.

-Everything else seemed to hold up fine, but you could tell it took a toll on the truck
