Some of you may have seen this already.
I just saw this yesterday. I wish it was true, I would love one.

    Maybe some day...

A new-gen Tundra is coming soon, maybe it'll get an HD version?
Toyota has been chatty about the next-generation Tundra and its plans to electrify the truck in order to better compete against rivals from Ford, General Motors, and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. However, we haven’t heard anything about the fullsize truck getting a heavy-duty version, something that has been missing in the brand’s range for ages.

This new rendering from WB.artist20 from Instagram previews what a dually based on the current Tundra could look like. It’s an idea we generally support and the drawing here proposes a very realistic design - it’s not really difficult to enlarge the truck and make it look bigger and wider but we’ll let the designer explain what he did.

    New Tundra Coming:
“Here’s what a Toyota Tundra TRD might look like as a dually. Upsized the grille/hood for a possible Cummins Diesel, upsized the headlights to match, extended mirrors and of course wide rear fenders with more wheels and more lug nuts.”

That’s a pretty solid formula for a heavy-duty truck, right? Looking at competitor models from Ford and GM, that’s probably the exact recipe all manufacturers are following. Well, honestly, a few more tweaks to the grille’s form and dimensions would be welcomed but everything else seems spot on.

The current Toyota Tundra has been on the market for 13 years but a new one is finally under development. The overhauled truck should ride on an updated platform and adopt a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 engine from Lexus. Also, as we mentioned above, there are talks about a potential Tundra Hybrid. There are no reports about a heavy-duty version, but who knows, maybe Toyota has secret plans to launch one and it could look like this rendering.

I see no reason for Tundra to enter this segment of the market, you are better off with a HINO in that segment.

I thought when Mike Sweers was interviewed on Truck Talk earlier this year, he said definitely no heavy duty Tundra.

Maybe, but I would also claim that the HD truck market is just as brand loyal as the 1/2 ton segment. Plus Toyota would have to put the R&D into coming up with a diesel emissions system that upholds to their reliability standards which they just don't see worth their time and money since they don't predict an HD Tundra to sell that well. But hey I would love nothing more.

They're not just as brand loyal, they're way more brand loyal. I'd argue the big 3 put a lot more R&D into reliability there than they do the 1/2 ton market so Toyota won't even have that going for them if they tried to break in. The diesel engines have broken that magical 1000 ft lbs from the factory so now all they are working on is reliability. The HD market would be incredibly tough to break into, about the only way is if they could make an HD workhorse that is cheaper than the big 3.

Why would it have to be a diesel? Heck they could take there current 5.7 beef it up to have some real capability an I bet it would still sell.. Powers not really the Tundras problem.. Give me the same tundra with like 3k in payload would make alot of people happy ..I doubt it would even take all that much to do that..

Motor1.com are the ones who photoshopped the titan to pass it off as the new tundra.

That needs just the outside tires, a +5" wider long travel front end with fiberglass front fenders, a linked rear end, bumpers, cage, and black paint. Then it would be cool.

Why would Toyota follow the lead of Nissan and pursue something that already failed?

Do it right and there's a huge market for them. That Cummins had decent HP which is a downfall of all the other small diesels. And the payload was above all other crew cab half tons at the time, and it certainly felt like it could be comfortable at that weight. Their mistake was the price. Do some negotiating and you could get a 1 ton for the same price as the XD. Expecting it to be in half ton pricing is too low, but it has be cheaper than a 1 ton - why buy a truck that has half the capability?

Toyota did dodge a bullet by getting away from the Cummins. The air flow chambers and directors just could not deal with the remnants of from the EGR. If they could tweak their own in house diesel to make similar power but deal with the particulates then an XD type of truck could be a winner.

Nissan HD was sized like a heavy duty truck. That was what killed it. If you want something you can't park in a garage, there are plenty of heavy duty models to choose from. If someone built a heavy half that was actually the size of a half, I think there would be a market. 1/2 ton trucks may be rated at 10k-14k but they really don't do it well.
