Hey all! Looking for some input on torque wrenches.....which ones to get and which kinds to stay away from. Looking for a good all around wrench that can do a wide range. As always any info is greatly appreciated!

I’ve been really happy with the 1/2 Kobalt that goes to 250ft lbs.Haven’t tried the 3/8 but for the money it is awesome feels super crisp and love the way it locks on your desired torque settings.

I bought the Icon 1/2” from Harbor Freight. Very impressed with the quality. Check out some YouTube reviews.

Snap-on is what I have in my toolbox, lifetime guarantee, professional grade tools. And wasn't that much more than the not so professional grade tools.

I would love snap-on or mac or the likes. Ives always torqued by feel, which I don't recommend, but I've never had a torque failure. But, I just got this and liked it so much I also got the 3/8"

I have snap on tech angles at work
At hone I have old snap on click style and some precision instrument twin beams. I’ve been very impressed with the accuracy of the precision instruments twin beams.

    Yep, a good thread! @AZTundra

It's all about budget and use. Emphasis on use first. If your torque wrench is going to sit in a tool box most of the time and only see occasional use then even most low end quality wrenches will suffice. On the other hand if you are a mechanic or work on cars a lot you don't want to buy crap if you want any longevity, accuracy, and repeatability. This is where budget kicks in.

Most of the Harbor Freight torque wrenches fail calibration new out of the box that come into our calibration lab. 1 out 5 might pass calibration even when new. Same with Harbor Freight calipers. Not high quality wrenches at all but good enough for occasional use. The Chinese steel tilt blocks wear out fast. That being said, once we adjust them into spec they are good to go.

Don’t forget that’s it’s not just about how often you use it but how critical that occasional usage is. If you’re torquing something critical that has to be right the first time it’s best to get a quality tool.

There is a vast difference between torquing rod bolts on an airplane and a handle on a lawnmower.

FYI.........CDI is SnapOn as @Prostar 190 already mentioned. Quite decent. Kick it up a notch>>>>>>Stahlwille. By far the best torque wrenches that come into our lab. We calibrate thousands of them.

Obviously if you need accuracy, repeatability, and precision to meet certain specs whether once or a thousand times you buy accordingly. A no brainer. Critical is a relative term. A loose nut on a cheap lawnmower wheel or blade could be considered critical and doesn't require a $250 torque wrench. Comparing torquing rod bolts on an aircraft to lawnmower handles at home in this context is a bit of a stretch. :notsure: That torque wrench that A&P certified aircraft mechanic is using will have a current valid traceable calibration sticker on it and will be following a strict procedure to tighten that rod bolt and it gets signed off when he is done. If not......a very short career. A bit different than your average home fixes like tinkering around in the garage or backyard. Lol
