Got my run in. Felt great. Apple Watch was dead and couldn’t find charge cord so ran blind. By how long I ran guessing I did a little over 2 miles. Was beautiful out, ran the beach. Only other person running was a woman trudging along, if she wasn’t 80 then I’m 35. She looked great. Talk about motivation.

That's awesome. I'm no runner, but I respect those who do. Seeing that you already cycle a bunch, I have no doubt you'll hit your goals.

Over the years I found shoes and body mechanics to be a feedback loop with each other. As you improve one the other requires slight adjustments over time. As an older runner your mechanics may not change drastically so I would starting out focusing on finding the right shoes to support your body weight, mechanics and types of trails you run. Having your body ache in pain every time you run will reduce your consistency (unless you are a masochist). As far as technique goes, breathing is usually the bottle neck for most new runners, once you find a rhythm for your breathing you'll build up to speed and technique. Don't forget to change up your workout and work in some sprint work and intervals; over time your body will get very efficient at running the same trail at the same pace.

I am excited for you! Best of luck!

I saddled up the poochie, strapped on my Oboz hiking boots and hit the trails in a warm -5c snowy and windy day.

Still no proper shoes, but the good news is....I hit my first realistic goal of 5k in 45min. I walked and did sprint intervals and will definitely feel it tomorrow. This is all extremely new to me but I'm having a blast. I have size 10 shoes here but need 1/2 size bigger and they should be here this week.

Martha is not off leash in the forest yet and to be honest, not sure when she will be. It's an ON leash area and although many dogs are off, many are running around and getting in bikers and runners way. I see now, how annoying and unfair that is to non-dog activity seekers and dog walkers on leash.

While not a huge accomplishment, I was quite proud to look down and see sub 45min. I managed to track a good trail 2.5k one way and then used tracbac to follow it back to my start.

    * Stopped time was dogs meeting up and letting bikers pass

I was gearing up to go for my first full time run with my new shoes, just 3k but this weather just swooped in for the next week...

+1 on the Altras. I have been using them for 4-5 years now, and have not had any Plantar Facihoweveryouspellit, or lost toe nails while training for several Trail Marathons and Ultras. The price of new running shoes is getting out of hand though. I love to support my local running store, but $150 is hard to justify when you can get them for half that on Amazon or REIs closeout section.

I ended up with Altra Superior Trail 4.5.

I've been wearing them around the house to confirm fit of 10 vs 10.5. I have a wide foot and they feel better than the Hoka's do. The Hoka's have more cushion under foot, but don't feel as nice to me. I'm not doing any 20k runs and will likely always be on trails and wood chips etc, so can live with a little less cushion.

    https://www.mec.ca/en/product/6010-308/Superior-4-5-Trail-Running-Shoes

They are cheaper elsewhere but don't have them in a 10 and I know MEC (REI type store) will stand behind them even after use.

It has been -30s here the past few days but I've been itching to try a run out with my shoes.

Today it warmed up to a current -25c (-35c with wind), so I gave it a go. Double layer top and bottom, winter jacket, toque and goose down mitts.

Set out to do 3k in under 20:00 and came in at 19:15. Walked 0.5-0.75 and then decided to see if I could push myself and finish 5k in under 40:00. To my delight, I finished my 5k in 38:05, which included 35-40 sec of stoppage time to let the dog poop in the woods and retie my shoes.

Very happy with the results and I'm sure I'll feel it tomorrow. The dog loved the quicker pace too, compared to our walks. She still pulls a bit, but not too bad for a new jogger dog.

Love this thread.....I was always built like a runner as a youngster. Long and lean. Now 6' 5" as an adult.
I went to the police academy 20 years ago and after graduation I felt I had to build up my "officer presence" in the gym. Put on a lot of muscle! Fast forward to marriage, 2 kids and into the detective bureau and all that muscle turned to "not muscle".
Two years ago I decided to take up running and I became fully invested. Nearly 48 now and I run 35-40 MPW. It's a part of my life and I am thankful for every single run. I'm back to being long and lean and feel so good. The mental health aspects of running have been life changing!
I am so proud of all of you for doing something hard. Keep moving.

2nd full Trail Run. 5k. -22. Zero stoppage time. A few small walk breaks to check GPS or let dog sniff something or pass people.

I was hoping for 35, which would have been 3 minutes faster than my first ever run as and adult last week.

    32:45. :bananadance:

Time for a nap! I do feel good though, very happy with my results today. Again, dog loved it much more than a slow paced walk.

    Wah wah wah ....

Went out for a run today, was on pace for 30:00/5k at the 3km mark. Slowed down to a walk @ about 3.5k to pass some walkers with a dog and my left calf complete seized up. Tried stretching it out, rubbing it, running on it.....no go :annoyed:

Hobbled back to the car and hope I can figure out the cause. I can't figure out if it was not enough warm up, my old body, over paced myself or a combination of all three. Anyway, I'll give it some rest and see how the next one goes

It did feel good to hit under 6min/k for most of my run. That put me on my pace for my initial goal of 30min/5k and I have no doubt I would have hit it today had I not cramped up. I'll get it before middle of March , barring any major unforseen setbacks :fingerscrossed:.

Once I hit that goal, I'll probably put the timer away and just enjoy my runs, then check on pace periodically to see if I'm improving at all.

Thanks again to everyone who has encouraged me and shown support. It truly helps and is appreciated.

"Barring any major setbacks...." Famous last words.

It seems my calf strain is more than a minor setback but likely not a major one. I gave it some rest and tried jogging on it a few days ago and only got 1k in. Tried some interval jogging and walking today, no go after a few kms.

Luckily I can easily walk on it, stretch it out and lightly jog on it, so don't think it's too serious. I'm going to give it a solid 2 weeks and see if the pain is entirely gone before running on it again.

The good news, I'm actually looking forward to running again and itching to do it.

Still walking 5k a day with the dog and enjoy the scenery.

After two weeks of waking and resting, I tried a light recovery run with mostly walking yesterday. It went well, so today was a full out 5k run that was successful.

I took it easy, let the dog sniff, she pulled me over on the ice once as she was trying to say hi to another dog, we stopped a few times to talk to people and my GPS konked out at about 4.2km, but I was on pace for a personally respectable 32-34min run.

Calf felt awesome. When I slowed down once to walk past a group of people at around 3.5km, I could ever so slightly feel something in the one calf but it wasn't sore and didn't affect anything. Finished the run and no major issues to report.

I've had my fair share of injuries mountain biking, cycling and the worst being a collapsed lung multiple times over the course of a few weeks until I had surgery on it....so I know some sensation, even with a minor strain or pull, is bound to be there during recovery.

I won't push it too hard until I'm confident it is back to 100%.

It felt great to be out running again, dog loved it and I had a great time.

Got another 5k run in today. Came in around 35min with a few stops to talk to people, let the dog sniff etc.

Trails are ICY and wet. It makes it a much more technical run, especially with a leashed dog leading me. I could run quicker without her, but that's not happening. She's the whole reason I took interest in it and she knows it. As soon as I grab my tech pants or long socks, she knows what's coming next.

Lots of terrain to maneuver around now that the snow is melting. Puddles, lots of ice, new logs, holes and jumping back and forth from side to side on the trail, all while making sure I'm leading Martha on the same route I want her to take. She's getting better and knows the pace now.

I know this isn't new to anyone else who trail runs, but it's fresh and fun in my eyes. Very much like my single track mountain bike days, looking ahead to see which route to take, which logs to jump on or over and dangers to avoid etc.

Another fun run on a sunny and warm 41*f (at least to us) day here in Canada :canada:

5 to 6 more 5k trail runs in since my last post. Whatever was wrong with my calf, seems to be completely healed.

Looking back at my first run, I had about a 5 day recovery period. The day or 2 after it, I could hardly bend over. Now I'm able to run daily with no soreness etc.

It goes to show what getting off the couch can do. I'm looking forward to cycling to work soon, 15k each way. I try to do it daily, but rain and heavy winds prevent it some days. This year I won't feel as bad, as I plan to continue trail running after work with Martha.

My last goal from Feb of a sub 30min, 5k trail run with Martha was met today.

I came in at 29:18. The nice thing was, my last 2km were faster than my first three. I was pacing myself and taking the odd slow down break to pass people (inevitable where I run) and was at 18min after 3km. Barring her having to stop for a poo break, me wiping out, pulling something or us running into 20 people in the last 2 km, I knew I would do it.

It felt good to get a sub 30min 5k trail run under my belt. 3 months ago, I can honestly say I hadn't run a km in the past 20+ years. I did lots of other stuff, but no running.

New goal set. 28min by end of July.

Martha was happy with her results too.

Trails were drying up nicely and then we got hit with a snow storm on the weekend. I didn't get out for a run for couple days.

We ran a 29:04/5k today, which included 2 pee and 1 poop stop.

I was happy with another sub 30 time.

A sloppy muddy mess, but she had a blast.

When she got home, she went out back and rolled around the grass and was covered in dead grass.

She cleans up nicely though. The water and mud just shred right off her

Plugging away at 4-6 runs a week with Martha. Most are 4.5k or so.

It just happens that out scenic trail run is just shy of 5k. Sometimes I add to it, sometimes I don't, sometimes I bump it up to 30min, sometimes I don't. That's the joy of just running for the fun of it.

I'm almost ready to try another timed 5k run. I think I'm close to my 28min goal, but I'm going to wait it out to be sure.

As for Martha...she's found a new spot to get my attention when I'm stretching to tell me to "hurry up". She slinks under, gives me a few licks, rolls around and whimpers.

Still running, still having fun, even run in the rain by choice.

Got some poison ivy the other day though. I'm guessing it's when I biffed on a big root with the dog attached to me and I landed on my ass in the woods. First thing I usually do is make sure dog is ok, then I look around to make sure no one saw me. Embarrassing as it to admit, it's probably the 3rd or 4th time I've biffed on a root. :anonymous:

I am starting to consider myself a runner now that I do 4-5k, 5-6 days a week. I'm guessing that is more than most N/A people my age. :muscleflexing:

A couple pics from my 5.5k trail run course when camping. Got to do this one 3 times with Martha and one time walking with the kids and her.

Lots of elevation changes, downed trees, roots, makeshift bridges and right on a couple lakes. Down one side of East Blue and back on West Blue.

    It was gorgeous.

There was even a few places for her to cool off, which was nice as it was hot.

Excited to go for my first, of what I hope to be many, Terry Fox Day trail runs on Terry Fox Day.

I was in elementary school when Terry was running across Canada and passed away. Over the next few years, I took part in school Terry Fox Runs but didn't appreciate what he was doing or the impact he would have on Canada and the world.

The annual Terry Fox Run isn't today, but I'm still celebrating Terry Fox Day in MB today with a run to honor this amazing young man.

50 and still at it. Running better then I was when I started and enjoying it more than I ever thought I would. I don't always feel like going but am always glad I went....Martha takes no convincing to go.

Another winter is wrapping up. I walked when it was below -15 to -20 and ran the rest. We have been in full swing the past month or so, 4-5 x 5km runs a week.

It's inbetween seasons, so slippery wet, cold and sweaty all at the same time.

I'm hoping the secluded trails are dry enough to run this year, they were under water all of 2022.

When we got home, Martha ran to the bedroom and rolled around on the bed to dry off.

My first rolled ankle since I started.

I don't think it's serious, I'm icing it and elevating it. Happened coming off the last turn today, didn't see a big root as the trails are brush overgrown and ended up on the ground.

It's walkable, moveable but starting to bruise and quickly swole up.

    Good ankle:
