Tacoma to Tundra differential swap

Want to know if I can use rear axle out of 2000 Tacoma in my 2001 tundra mine is 3.91axle none locker 4.7 engine

Everything I have seen/read is no. I can’t remember specifics though as to why they will not fit.

 

The Tundra diff housing is larger and the 3rd member is reinforced. Length may be different.

You could possibly swap complete 3rds but I can't confirm if they will work (axle spline size may be different, etc).

Same size R&P iirc and you can possibly swap a locker/LSD from one 3rd member to another if axle spline size is the same.

 

Yeah. He did both the front and rear diffs swap from a Taco.

 

They're different widths, the Tundra axle housings being wider making the Tacoma axles too short. The thirds are swapable though, I've done it a couple of times.

 

The 3rd Members are identical, I have a 4.56 3rd member in my truck from a 2.7L Tacoma.

Housings are different, axle shafts are longer, so you’ll need to keep your Tundra housing and axle, but the 3rd member is bolt in.

just make sure your gear ratios match.

 

Conversely, A Tundra rear axle is the perfect swap for a widebody Tacoma, or for that "froggy" look in the rear.

So just want to confirm my third member is not a locker but the Tacoma is will that make any difference or are the 3rd members same size lockeror not

Which one of these lockers is most like the OEM LSD from 2002 Tundras?

East Coast Gears sells 3rd Members (rebuilt) and you can add a locker option. The LSD has done me good since new so figuring something along the same option.

 

The locker Tacomas are an entirely different differential. They will NOT work in a Tundra.

 

All of them EXCEPT the true trac are lockers and will most likely have much harsher engagement than a LSD.

The true trac is a gear driven (torsen) LSD, which works good unless one wheel has zero traction. IE: one wheel is airborne, one on ice and the other on pavement (or super slick mud). Then it'll act like an open diff.

 

All true....but this can be overcome with a little deft working of the brakes in that scenario...

 

Poor mans LSD = some light to moderate parking brake application in low traction situations.
