I took my truck to Toyota and they said that there’s nothing they can do because the frame wasn’t recalled but the frame is damaged. I took it to a frame shop and they said I need a new frame. What’s my next step? Should I trade it in or sell it? Do dealers inspect the frame when you try and trade it in?

Part it out or sell it for $1-2k like all the rest we’ve seen over the years. Some are trying to get $4k for their rust buckets with the late surge in auto prices.

Bummer for you. Hope it works out.

Yikes. I would escalate this to Toyota corporate. may also help others to give input if you share what year and mileage, as well as have you been in any accidents.

I would start with Toyota corporate. Squeaky wheel gets the grease. I would not knowingly sell it without disclosing the issue, as someone could get very hurt if it falls apart while they are driving, and if someone finds out you knew and didn’t disclose it they could sue you for damages and repair costs etc.

Especially now that you posted on a public forum...

This is a common ploy with others over the years. They come on here posting Board Members phone numbers etc to no avail.

Here is a valuable link for 1st Gens Rust.

Would you want a loved one or friend, buying it and getting killed in because the frame crumbled on minor impact?

You can't sell or trade it without disclosing that information up front.

    Think about it.

Dead stock with oem 16" starfish wheels. We'll see how long that lasts. :) Topper of unknown origin.
I would hope that even the most fly-by-night used car dealers have access to a list of car-killers for every car made in the last 30 years: Toyota trucks that snap in two, VWs that puke transmission guts at 100K miles, etc.

I don't know this but I'd think a dealer would see your Tundra coming from a mile away. Plus, do you want to get away with getting $3K (what my friend was offered on trade for his nice FGT) for a piece of garbage?

Then again, ping carvana.com or other online car buyer, they just offered $4,841 for my truck and never asked if it has a rusty frame.

I was going to suggest that very same thing. I bought the frame cap kit and it worked out very well.

I ended up fabricating my own rear frame stiffeners.

Check out my thread for good info on frame repair

This is for a 15-21 year old truck. Suck it up and either fix it or part it out. I live in New England. A lot of vehicles have met their demise due to rust and rot. The fact that Toyota stepped up in the first place is remarkable. Think about all the Jeep’s that have been junked due to frame rot with no assistance from the manufacturer.

We all complain about the cost of new vehicles...this is one of the reasons. Nothing is “free”. 15 years old and complaining that they won’t replace the frame. FFS.

Yeah. It’s an old truck in the rust belt. It’s time for a new truck in the rust belt that will be in the same position in 15 years. It’s the vicious cycle unfortunately.

if a frame shop said they won’t fix it... i wouldn’t mess with it further unless you’re an accomplished welder and like to fabricate. I know my uncles 1st gen was rusty a while ago. The he got a new frame. Which promptly started rusting. So he went and bought an old rusty land cruiser. I want to smack him.
