I have always had canopies and considering a tonneau this time, hard folding or retractable.

I’d be interested to hear experience using tonneaus on rough off-road conditions over the long-term. And especially whether retractable tonneaus work smoothly through years of off-road rattling and getting dust in the roll up mechanism. I am thinking fully manual, nothing electronic.

The truck I use for off roading had a nice retractable Switchblade tonneau cover when I bought it. First time out I had the truck crossed up on an obstacle and the bed twisted enough for the cover to fall out of the track. I removed it the next day and put it on my work truck. It's 10+ years old and still operates like it's supposed to.

The front half of the frame on the tundra is boxed and the rear half isn't so there is a lot of bed twist. I am not familiar with a folding cover so I can't comment on that, but a roll up cover would work fine since the tolerances are a lot higher than a retractable.
