Im New to this forum. I have 2011 5.7L & looking to add a cold intake and step up the exhaust. I was thinking about doing the TRD CAI and wanted to do an exhaust that has some decent tone to it but wnna keep the drone down. Does anyone have any pros or cons on the TRD intake? And any recommendations for the exhaust that im looking for? Thanks

Not sure about the TRD. But I've been running the AFE Stage II dry and an AFE throttle body spacer, for about 2 yrs. Mine is a 2011. LOVE IT!
I just dropped in a MBRP off road Dump style exhaust. Low, mean sound w/ great response.

@JROCK915 I've heard more cons on the throttle body spacer. But good to hear you had results. What's the results u had w it? And how's the drone on the mbrp exhaust u have?

Only con on the TRD is the price. I'm not sure if you have heard of the stock airbox mod (SABM) but I have heard guys get similar results and spend less coin, but off hand I can't remember what year airbox style that was for. For exhaust the TRD seems to fit your bill. I have heard the TRD in person and IMHO it sounds great. What have u heard in person? I listened to a lot on YouTube to get an idea, but its hard to tell what they would sound like in person.

    Welcome!
You're going to hear a mix of both pros/cons here. I'm neutral, but if had to go with one I would choose TRD.

Welcome! I am still on the fence concerning exhaust. I like to be able to hear my truck at least a little bit. Stock set up is just too quiet. Hope to learn more here at Tundras.com on what to come up with. The stock 2nd gen air box is in reality a CAI. As MOTO mentioned above there is the SABM kit to improve the stock set up which I plan on doing. Already dropped in a K&N primarily to save $ on filters. Many of the aftermarket CAI's are not getting cooler air from the outside, just hot air that is in the engine compartment and they look cool. The SABM kit provides more cooler air from the outside to the stock air box , and you get to retain stock parts leaving you more money to spend on something else

i havent heard anything good about the trd. its basically the same as the stock as what i understand as far as performance. i have an airaid intake. looks cool. i can hear it with a nice whistling sound. but since i have made other mods lifted and bigger tires and wheels. im not sure if i have really gained anything. possibly to the way i drive. also those boosters and stuff from what i hear is a bunch of crap. airaid sells one for their set up for $30. wont break the bank to give it a try. for me the biggest thing i dont have to ever replaces the filter. i can give it a rinse and thats it. exhaust i have a magnaflow. i think it sounds fine. everyone says its really loud. driving everyday i dont really hear as much anymore. i came from no exhaust to finally spending the money $300 installed, so it is quieter. whats nice about the tundras is that the muffler bolts on and off pretty easily and the tail pipe as well. so its not hard to take it off and hear how it sounds. it will pass inspection minus the sound...no check engine lights or anything. i would put it on get inspection and then take it off. its nice in city. but long drives gets annoying because it is loud.

You can get more info on the SABM kit on Toyota Parts Exchange. It is a G-Tek fab that was developed to upgrade stock cai to improve power loss caused by lifted trucks with larger tires and no diff gear changes. The site breaks down the actual parts needed for DIYer's. Anybody heard of BAmufflers or have them on their truck?

Im not sure if we are talking about the same thing, I mean the TRD dual exhaust catback setup. It only comes stock on the TRD Pro unless the dealer added TRD duals to your truck.

A little, not enough to bother me. It comes down to sometimes I wish it were a tad louder, somtimes a tad quieter. So that said, probably a good middle ground. Real deep, sounds great at around 2500rpm, the drone is down low so if you lug the truck and hypermile it you'll notice the drone, drive it a little harder and you wont sit in the rpm range that produces the drone :)

Pretty impressive. Sounds great. I hear that Keith Carty will pretty much fab whatever setup you want and won't break the bank. You just made up my mind. Thanks.

Throttle response is a lot quicker and smoother. Torque is crazy.
At first start, drone is a lil loud
However, after idle kicks in, it's really not bad at all. I can try and do a sound clip, if you'd like. It's got a smooth, deep, mellow tone while cruising. Plus, she sounds mean as hell, when you get on it.

Saved $$$ by getting the aluminum. Primed & painted it. Looks great. Spent less than $290.

I prefer the TRD exhaust to the MBRP one. I like the sound of both but I find the TRD gives the truck a distinctive sound that the MBRP doesn't. I talked to the guys at MBRP and they were talking about changing it a bit for the 2014 and up. The main office and factory is in my home town so I see every new thing that comes from there.

I have TRD exhaust and TRD intake love them both. I installed the exhaust first. It sounds really aggressive at WOT, but very quiet when cruising. TRD intake just made the sound a little louder. No drone with both. I've had them for several years now and still gives me a lot of pleasure every time I drive my truck. There was slight increase in mpg, but no where enough to get my $$ back from the savings, haha. Then again, I got them for the sound, not for the mpg gain.

Just installed CAI and exhaust today. Absolutely no regrets. More power. More sound. I'll post about mileage when I'm done smoking tires for the next few days.
