Hey guys. So as the title says I’ve just been pondering the idea of getting a dump trailer. I know there’s been a few other threads about this but figured I would start my own. I do concrete work and I want to start doing more side jobs and maybe get out on my own in a few years. It would make my life so much easier, it’s a pain logistically setting up jobs because of having to rent a trailer, worry about when the pits are open to load or dump material and so on.I would be able to do jobs more on my own time obviously, instead of trying to cram stuff in on a Saturday morning with a rented trailer and hope pits will be open.

So I’ve read a shitload of threads about towing with our trucks but honestly it all still confuses the shit out of me. I can’t be the only one haha.

Looking for your guys advice on how big of a trailer I can go. I want to get one and not have to sit and worry if it’s overloaded all the time and all that. ( I know you can overload anything) I would be hauling everything.. sod, class 5, concrete and asphalt demo. Be able to tow a small skiddy or dingo with it. Driving on Free way, county road, gravel road, in town. All the above. I just want to pull it, be safe and be able to focus on the job. I understand it’s kind of an open ended question but hoping some of you guys might have some insight to at least give me a better idea of what I should be looking for, as far as the GVWR and the GAWR and all that stuff.

    I was thinking maybe a 6 x 12 would be a size I wouldn’t have to worry about.

@thearborbarber i saw in another thread you had an H&H 12’ dump trailer. You have any insight?

I saw this on their website, seems the tundra could handle it no problem.. probably wouldn’t buy new but just a starting point for specs.

    thanks guys

Dump trailers are heavy on their own before you start adding very dense cargo to them. If you plan on hauling dirt, sod, concrete, etc, I would look to a one ton truck as you won't be able to fit much before your truck is overloaded.

If you do get a one ton truck to properly haul a dump trailer, I would special the trailer with the next size up axles. You would be amazed at how quickly you are overloaded hauling concrete and dirt.

Yeah Bigger truck is probably in the picture in the next few years. We pull them almost daily with a 350 and 550.

edit/ I don’t know why I said that, maybe a bigger one in the future. Definitely not in the cards right now. I know the tundra has limits but it can obviously haul a dump trailer with the right load.

Seems like a 10’ one would be a good size. Looks like I could haul a couple ton of dirt or gravel or a few yards of broken up concrete and be just fine

    I have Brimar 6x12 10000lbs.
    Empty trailer is around 3500
Tundra can handle that no problem.
I vent couple times over limit probably 8000+ load without any issues.
Just use common sense when you loading up cargo

I’ve been looking at dumps as well. 6 x 10 10k was going to be my option as well. hold more cargo weight than a 6x12 since trailer weighs a hair less. I would use mostly for gravel so I would max out on weight before ran out of space. If you have equipment to haul I’d go 12 ft. As that extra room would probably benefit you more.

My brother in law has a smaller tandem axle dump trailer. I pulled it with my F350 as well as with my 2014 Tundra and it is a night and day difference. If you were hauling housing debri or mulch then the Tundra would be fine. But for cement and sod, you just would not be able to transport much before your truck was taxed.

I have a 6x12 foot H&H. It weighs 2800 empty and a 10k gvwr. It pulls very easy. I would be hard pressed to get a different brand after this one. It's very well built. Carry a jump pack to get the bed down just in case you run out of battery. That's the voice of experience. They sell for $6500 at the dealer I bought mine from.

Haha might just be a little to heavy for our trucks. Could maybe haul one shovel full of dirt

One more thing, a dump trailer will be one of the best towing trailers if you keep the weight within your vehicles capabilities. The weight is low and they are built solid since the manufacturers know most of them will get abused. Just take a minute to calculate your payload and you will not have a problem.

I've got a 6x12 dump trailer with 4 foot sides. I've been hauling 6 yards of black mulch up a 12% grade at a time for our property. The tundra does it but a bigger truck would do it easier for sure. I don't push it hard going uphill though.

Another thought. I’ve been looking at renting one. Sunbeam rentals has a 10k for $150 per day. I just plan to get for a day for some gravel. I planned to keep it to about 7k or so per trip. The gravel pit happens to be close by.

anyways thought is that renting can give you a trial run w one before purchasing to see how it works out

Yup I’m renting one this week cause I got a job to do. See how it goes. I’m in no rush to hurry up and buy, I like to ponder over these things for awhile
