2020 LandCruiser comes with transmission cooler, why not Tundra?

Toyota is doing nothing to make this right. So I would encourage everyone in this situation to file consumer complaints with the Federal Trade Commission and your state attorney general office or DMV. The more pressure put on Toyota, the better.

Missing the Driver's side grab handle too. Get a transmission cooler. Problem solved.

Really? This is the first time hearing of it. There’s not 100s of posts already about it with people who think they can make Toyota do a recall.

They aren't missing. They're just small and mounted to the transmission.

Unbelievable! There have to this point been 0 transmissions that have failed because the 2019+ models don’t have an aux trans cooler. If you really feel that strongly about it you have 2 options:
    1. Install an external cooler yourself.
    2. Trade it for a truck that does have a cooler.
If you’re sitting around waiting for Toyota to do something about it, you’re just pissing in the wind.

Was it shown to be because of the lack of an external cooler? Was it s/c’ed? Any other mods that may have contributed? Look I know Toyota’s not perfect and every vehicle they make is not perfect, but as far as I’m concerned they’ve earned the benefit of the doubt.

    Stock, just towed.

One out of a couple hundred thousand is pretty good.

Just info nothing more, I am still on the "concerned fence."

Monitoring temps over the last week. I hold steady at 187F driving on the highway warmed up around 80mph with an outside ambient of 86F-ish. Towing a 2k-ish trailer this weekend loaded with tree branches it was around the same temp but outside was down to 70F-ish. I guess for my purposes it will survive. I wish I had had this monitor during my trip to the Colorado mountains where I had to run around in 3-4th gear just to keep speed. Adding our Texoma max summer temps of 109F to the equation, I assume I'll be hitting around 210F unloaded and close to 230F with my junk hauling trailer.

I love the people that get on here acting like they are going to make Toyota give them a cooler or some other reparation for their suffering which to this point is a number on a scan tool they don’t like

This. If your transmission fails while you're under warranty, Toyota will replace it. I would still have more confidence in the longevity of a Toyota transmission without a cooler than one from the big 3 with a cooler.

I have been tracking my transmission temps daily for months (comes up on my Kenwood HU so easy to see). I have a 15 mins commute that is 8 miles each way and M-F my transmission barely makes it to 150F. I've done a bunch of highway trips lately and at +80MPH the transmission is usually around 200F. I've also been doing some light towing of about 2500lbs and a few times I saw temps hit 220F briefly and most of the time it's in the 205-210F range. .

So I think for many people the lack of an external cooler will be of zero significance. For those who routinely tow +5000lbs it may be an issue but we will have to wait and see. I think regardless of why they chose to get rid of the external cooler, it may have made sense from an engineering perspective but it is a perception problem.

I like both of these posts (Clemsonman14’s too)

Dodge trucks are running higher engine oil temps in range of 240-260F.

there is a little angst, but no lawsuit threats.

Imagine bringing a lawsuit to trial against Toyota on the transmission cooler. Entertain this hypothetical with me.

You are sitting there with your legal team. Your new suit is itchy and uncomfortable. The new shoes you bought already gave you blisters walking from the parking lot of the courthouse.

You are early and going over notes with your team.

    Points you want to emphasize:

The language on window sticker was changed from 'a warmer' to a 'cooler'.
Transmission temps are 40F higher than previous years
Transmission fluid can't realistically handle temps over 200F for very long.

Your legal standing is that you had to put an auxiliary cooler on the truck for $1000 to bring the truck into a more sensible thermal management. Your legal claim is something in the realm of fraudulence on part of Toyota.

You look over at Toyota's team. 25 corporate attorney's. They are all surfing their phones looking bored. They only have a few documents in hand. Likely just court process documentation.

Then you hear the doors open behind you in the court room. It's 7:59 and in walks Mike Sweers.

    Gulp.

He has a train of stuff with him.

He personally wheels in a stack of binders on a dolly. He has a box of terabyte hard drives. They look well worn. Then in comes 3 transmissions on display bucks.

    FML.

Mike Sweers is looking irritated. He'd rather be designing and making Toyota Trucks and SUVs not dealing with internet commandos.

You present your case first. It goes well. The window sticker landed some legal punches.

    Then Toyota has their chance.

Mike shows reams of test data conducted on the AB60F.

The unit has been tested without a cooler for many years.
    This was a targeted change.
They knew the temps would go up 40F.
Mike presents several documents and tests showing WS ATF is a group iii oil capable of withstanding up to 300F.
He shows the detailed test plan that shows the contribution of thermal management from shift mapping, rear gear, and the hockey puck cooler.

He goes to the transmission specimens. He indicates each unit was run at different loads on a transmission dynomometer to 500,000 simulated miles. Then he shows the internals and there is slightly more visible wear on the most heavily loaded units. Otherwise no broken parts.

Then he shows the Davis dam testing. It was done 200 times with different configurations and ambient temps. Temps hit 250F but no issue noted.

He then shows testing details from a test done at a Toyota facility (not a public road) where the truck was run with a 200% overload. Temps hit 290F and they ran it for a week non stop around a track at 85 mph. No issues.

They ran the same truck with a 25% reduced coolant charge to simulate loss of coolant and cooling to the puck. Truck ran for a month on same track at 75 mph. Engine temps went up to 240F, trans pan temps hit 340F. Clutches were worn. Shifting issues were documented. Seals were found to be ok.

They also show their testing with competitor trucks and show 40 deg higher temps when auxillary trans coolers are removed.

Finally warranty claims: they would show from their dealer network across the United States and Canada that warranty claims are a statistical wash vs previous years.

And they have not identified a warranty claim or transmission failure directly attributable to reduced cooling vs manufacturing defect.

They in total show that the puck is actually a cooler as well as a warmer due to the function of the cooling system thermostat, that the transmission still meets all their internal targets for thermal management among others.

    Toyota rests their case.

You feel like 'the Coyote who ran off the cliff'.

This is totally hypothetical. But the case would go something like this.

Toyota has the data and information. It is their intellectual property. "You" have an internet connection and a keyboard.
