2000 tundra transmission went up

Got on this thread for some insight. My mom recently bought a 2000 tundra 4.7 v8 4x4 from a guy that got it from a Toyota dealership that used it to tow cars around. Little over 120k on the motor, drove it 3hrs from picking it up and around town for about a month with zero problems and then all sudden driving to a buddy's house the transmission just went out without any warning or clunk or anything. From what I've read the early first gen tundras had poorly designed gears. But on to my original question, I've been looking around for a 03, 04 tranny with no luck, as far as putting an 05 in it what's involved and is it possible? Would also like to know if anyone has put an older 4runner transmission in there's and if it's a good swap? Any advice would be appreciated, thanks!

I'm not a tranny guy so can't help....but good idea...a Toyota engine with only 120K still has a lot left in her!

 

What is it out of and how much?

 

It came out of a 2004 tundra double cab with 151,000 miles. It includes the torque converter, shift cable and crossmember if you need it.

I'd like to get $450.00 for it. If you're interested I also have the transfer case.

 

FYI, the truck also had the 4.7l I force V-8

 

03-04 V8 4x4 is a direct swap except that they use a different fluid than the 00-02. 05-06 is a completely different transmission.

The one Whiskey is selling is good with a reasonable price.

 

Can you shed more light on the transmission issue....just went out? So I'm sure you made sure it was full of fluid on the dipstick, when running of course. Shift cable didn't snap? Not one of those drive by wire models and you push on the gas and nothing happens? That's very low mileage for a Jap transmission to go, but anything is possible. Did these have issues, I would like to find out myself, and what years swap over. Are the 4x4 and 2 wheel drive transmissions the same by just adding or removing the tail shaft? < Might open up some options if you need one.

 

Never heard of one simply "going out". If the old owner towed a lot in OD it will take out the gear. When mine went out it just started making a noise when shifting (sounded just like putting an old car in gear with bad U-joints). Drop the pan and see if you have stuff in there that doesn't belong (mine had lots of nice metal chunks). Other wise, I'd say get it checked out before simply assuming it needs to be replaced.

 

Where are you located whiskey? Did he end up buying your transmission? I am shopping for one, I have an 02 tundra with the same engine.
