    2016 Tundra SR5
Hello guys, I own a 2016 Toyota Tundra SR5 with the extended cab that I bought used with 49K miles July 2019 from a local Toyota Dealer with no warranty. Here in Central Texas we recently had unusually cold temperatures around 12° or so for about a week, after this I happened to check the oil and noticed it was 3 quarts low. So I took it to the dealer for an oil change and checked it again at home and the oil looked dirty, about 2 1/2 weeks started noticing big cloud of white smoke on startup. Put it in the shop for a PCV valve replacement which is under the intake manifold, plus an oil change. No problems but after 2 days, the smoke appeared again. Now its back in the shop and they tell me its using an unusual amount of oil, but still looking into it as of today. So I'm not sure if its leaking coolant somewhere, but the engine is not overheating and all gauges are reading normal and there is no stammering or hesitation from the engine or maybe cracked head(s) or block. My daily commutes to work and home now are around 20 miles not sure if this is a good thing or not. Has anyone else come across this? My last Tundra was a 2002 and never had any problems of course those miles were all highway miles from an hour long commute one way for work out of town. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Have you checked the coolant to see if it's protection from freezing is at the proper level? Being in Texas it may be possible that former owner replaced or added just water to the cooling system without the needed antifreeze. Then with the unusually cold weather experienced this past winter causing freeze damage to the engine.

Good luck and I hope that's not the issue.

Took my 2016 Tundra to the local Toyota dealer, dealer said the engine was shot due to oil sludge from too few oil changes on my part, recommended a used engine with 60k miles for $10,000 or a rebuilt engine for $13,000. Called a reputable shop in town with the "new engine" scenario for a second opinion, said they would run a diagnostic test, and call me back once I brought the truck to them if I could, so after a day the shop called back and said "Good news, its not your engine" it was my pcv valve and crankcase ventilation, so after 2 engine flushes and clean oil, instead of recycled oil that dealer used, the truck is running great. No more smoke on start up or during acceleration. Shop recommended an oil change after 3000 miles along with another engine flush, so not taking this truck back to the local Toyota dealer.

    Wow.

    Just wow.

I would write a review that was Nobel Prize worthy.

So were you really skipping oil changes or was that part BS?

Agreed. I would write a letter to Toyota USA. Pay to send it certified and put "ATTN: Legal Department" on the front. Don't have to threaten anything, just express your concerns over unscrupulous dealer practices and inherent damage this does to your opinion of their brand and reputation. Trust me, when they attorneys get it they will look into the dealership. It won't likely get you anything, but may stop them for trying to steal 10K from you, then sell your "used engine" to the next guy and stealing 10k from him, etc.

The only reason I get service at the dealer is because it’s free right now and even with that it’s close to not worth it.

    Good stuff!
I've seen this happen twice on my '17. 33k miles and I change my oil at 4-5k intervals, not consuming any oil or coolant.
The condition I've noticed it were when I ran the truck hard and shut it off soon after that. The next time I fired it up, big cloud of white smoke.
I'll have to check the pcv.

What dealership is this? Just so other members are forewarned if they happen to use that dealership.
