Update on this thread. During my trip to Texas in July with the camper this problem cropped up again.

I added another bottle of the friction modifier and it subsisted.

900 miles later it’s starting to do it again. I’m at 13000 miles since the fluid change in January, so I am getting close to the 15k mark which I believe is the time to change.

I’ve done some reading and my dad is a preferred member of amsoil, so I’m just ordered some to give them a shot. If that doesn’t work, I’ll try out the Lucas that was recommended here.

Just an update, It has been 1 year since I switched from the mobil (which is supposed to be for limited slip diffs) with added friction modifier, too the Amsoil super extreme blah blah differential fluid. I am at roughly 14000 miles since the change and haven't had any reoccurrence of my previous vibration / chatter issue.

I'm not going to lie I always was an extreme skeptic of oil branding, but it appears this fluid has something extra.
    YMMV

Amsoil has a great rep. What exact product did you end up going with, and what was the weight listed on the package?

This is the stuff I got. Bought a case of it in the hopes I would be happy with it. Debating if I'm going to change at 15K, or keep running.

@shoe07 what's the capacity of the rear diff, I can't remember? Will 2 quarts get it? I'm having the exact same issue that you described when making turns from a stop. I put the Lucas heavy duty that everyone recommends but it still gave me issues. Added some LS additive and it helped for a few weeks. Going to try the Amsoil after hearing of the success you had.

I started getting a "thump" in my drive system about 50 miles back when making a left turn from a stop - while turning. The "thump" started getting worse. I have been changing my diff oil every 50k miles.
Inspecting my drive system from underneath I found my driveshaft carrier bearing's boot was worn out and had about ³/⁴" of slop. Replaced the carrier bearing and all three universal joints, after all it's been 345k miles. Didn't fix the problem.
Pulled the differential drain plug and a chunk of gear and a bunch of metal shavings was on the plug's magnet, and a bunch of shavings came out with the oil. Ugh. So pulling my diff to see if I can repair it. I understand replacement gears can be hard to find and/or quite expensive. Might have to do the junkyard crawl as a last resort.

Good info and thanks for keeping it updated. This just started happening on a road trip with my 1000lb truck camper in the bed. Only would do it after long stretches on the highway. Figured it was lsd related but glad to know fluid change should fix it.

Swapping out the Lucas Heavy Duty with the Amsoil worked for me. I could still feel a bit of grinding at first when making turns but around 100 miles later the new gear oil settled in and smoothed things out for sure.
