Yeah, I read somewhere where we can soak the wallpaper with whatever we're going to use, and then tape some plastic sheeting to the wall and let it sit for a few hours to essentially force it to soak in. I'll likely plan for sheetrocking, but try that first, and if it works, woohoo! If not, at least I'm prepared.

Yea with that kilz IF it's going to come off you will know as it will bubble when the kilz dries. If it doesn't should be solid and sealed enough with the kilz to do what you need to do.

    stick with this plan.

It's wise when doing a major renovation like a kitchen or bath to 'gut it' & start fresh

You can remove all of the drywall in a room in 30 minutes.

Unless you remove the drywall to find nearly an inch of plaster and metal lathe underneath... then it becomes an entire day trying to remove that shit. Yes, 1/2 drywall ON TOP of 3/4 of plaster. Which in the bathroom was all behind terrible Pink tile and an INCH of thinset/mortar.

    It haunts me still.

    Mother of God. O_O

Thankfully, yeah, we just have sheetrock on top of studs, although what they attached to the sheetrock is often attached with Liquid Nails and the like. LOL

Is it an older house? I'm wondering if maybe it had paneling liquid nails to the rock and then at some point someone tore it down and half assed some wallpaper

Liquid nails is rather status quo in many tract homes. The consensus among those cheap grade builders (or subcontractors) is that it helps alleviate nail pops down the line. I've seen a lot of homes that are poorly glued like that, tact in with a few nails, and then fully fastened later with screws. Three types of fasteners is insane to me.

The glue is often curing before the screws come in, so it adds to a pretty wavy looking wall.

....but it shouldn't be status quo for wallpaper. (Yes, wallpaper. Yes, I'm serious.)

It was built in 1981...my guess is that whoever built it used it because they had it on hand, and that was that. LOL
