Found this in my Wife's family home, everyone gone now and it's up to her and her older brother to clean out and sell 60 years worth of life. They've discovered all sorts of things they didn't know.
Here's one thing that was found in a wooden box that belonged to a brother who passed away back in 78.

There's some markings on one side, kinda like an A but it's really too far forward to where someone would have attached a handle and strapped it in with leather.

It really does look like a tomahawk head. I've never seen a rock with a pointed edge like that naturally. But i'm no rock expert.

    Anyone got any suggestions?

I would contact an anthropologist at a major university or a museum, and send them photos. I would assume, as your wife's brother did, that it was an improvised stone axe, hammer, tool from local native people during the Stone Age.

While it's rare to find a river rock with exactly the right shape, it does happen, and the finder could have worked a stone otherwise suitable to make an edge. The stone hammers/axes I saw displayed at Gila Cliff Dwellings had a groove tooled into the stone across the chord about in the center (see below). That could be a technology advancement from the piece that you have. The women that did the skinning and tanning also used stone tools for scrapers and other chores.

Here is a link with a lot of examples. Some of these documented pieces look less like an axe than what you have.

Interesting, I forgot about using stone tools for skinning and such. It would have been found in the upstate SC or western NC most likely. This does not have the groove for the handle so I suspect it would be a hand tool. My wife's older brother has sent the photos to a couple of schools, we'll see what they say.
    Thanks for the feedback.

I predict that the markings you mentioned are going to be significant to the identification.

Further down in the linked examples, you will see some pieces with markings. You might compare with what you have, and try following up on those examples as to location found, etc. The marks may indicate tribe, or owner's name, as in "property of...". Keep us informed.
