I remember in high school, I had a couple of friends that had the Toyota trucks (early 90s, so what ever came before the Tacoma). Those seem so tiny in comparison now :)

Ehhh... I mean it was a factory option from 00-04 so...

Im far from an expert on the forced induction side but I think the 400hp number that @empty_lord threw out is on the stock bottom end for the non VVTI motors. The trouble comes in when people try to run double digit boost or SC the VVTI motors.

I know a few members here are boosted but some of the guys on the First Gen Facebook seem to be the mega experts.

Total agreement here. I’m dreaming of my 2002 coming home precisely because it would be purely a casual tow/haul vehicle and because I know it hasn’t sat idle and has been maintained by my buddy. I wouldn’t be nearly as interested in any other old truck I didn’t have history on.

I actually drilled holes in the floor to mount an under seat amp. I’m curious how they look now. That may require some cleanup but maybe it’s ok bc Cali weather is on the gentle side.

Personally I do, I just think the Facebook group has the benefit of appealing to a wider audience.

400 for the vvti motor should be doable without too much fuss. But must be done right. The vvti motor isn’t any weaker or stronger than the non vvti. Same rods, pistons, cranks

What about gas tank on the RCLB? Can we do a 50 gallon or something?

I'm pretty glad I didn't see it or I'd have been tempted. But 2wd and salvage for $20k is not the smartest purchase even if it is the nicest RCSB in town.

It would be excellent if they brought back a mini truck. That would, however, require people to buy the maverick. And with the ridgeline and frontier selling as they do, that seems...unlikely?

I think tesla really missed the boat on the pickup idea, they went big to attempt to steal the existing market instead of starting small and creating a brand new market out of non-truck owners. A model P the size of a Y with a 5' truck bed and the EV drivetrain at 35k could be very sexy and easier to build I think.

I am looking to go from a second gen DCLB 2wd Tacoma to a 4wd double cab 1st gen Tundra. I love my taco, but with two kids and a German shepherd it's getting tight and I want 4wd now that my truck will be solely for weekend adventures and rugged camping road trips. My trusty little Toyota Matrix is the daily driver.

Do you guys think this is a good plan?

    Here's a truck I'm looking at today...

    2005 Toyota Tundra Double Cab
    Painted A Year Ago.
    New Shock Front and back.
    New rear axles and bearings.
New sway bar links and bushings.
    New steering rack.
    New Brakes.
    Drives Great.
    Sounds Great.
Scratch Free and no major dents.
    Clean Title.
Leather and Carpets in great shape.
Lifted a 2.5 in front and 3 in back.
    Flow Master dual Exhaust.
    All Terrain TKO tires.
    TRD.
    Soft topper canvas top.
    Tow Package.
Well Maintained - timing belt at 88k.
    148,000 Miles.
    Tan Leather Interior.
    4x4.
    Side Curtain Air Bags.

All maintenance up to date with records. Timing belt and pump did around 86k.

He's asking 16k. Only downfall is it's painted aqua blue. But I think that can grow on me. Lift was done properly with coils, new shocks, add a leaf and a block in the rear.

    Thoughts?

I love the 1st gen Tundras. If I didn't have 3 kids and a 60lb dog, I'd be in one. But a crewmax was the right move for us. I'm accumulating more pin stripes than I would in a 1st gen Tundra; that's for sure!

I'd still love to restore one of those old 80s pickups...

Seems like it checks all the right boxes, if that's the one you are looking for.
If it has maintenance records, or you can verify that it was well maintained & not beaten off-road, or towed really heavy trailers, you're probably good.
My initial feeling is that price is a little high . . . but thinking about it further, what else can you get nowadays for $16K?
I'd like to see it around $14K . . . but if it's rust-free and the guy won't budge, you may wanna jump on it.
Only question I'd have is, "why new rear axles & bearings? Why did it need that done"? Heavy use?
As far as the paint goes . . . that's on you, some dudes don't care what color they drive, others do.
You may inquire as to the quality of the paint job.
Good luck with whatever you decide.

thanks for all the insight. i am going to ask those questions today. Also wondering why new rear axles and bearings. he's said it was his "surf truck", hence the color.

'Surf Truck' as in 'Baja Trips' or just to the beach to surf? Big difference.
That color isn't as bad as i thought.
If you are in So Cal and the truck was purchased/lived here, you're prob. fine on the rust deal.
But it's always good to get under it and look around for rust/ leaks etc.

When he says new rear axles, he may mean just the shorter axle the slides into the main axle. The bearings on that are a pain to replace so maybe he just bought the full axles assembled.
