Recently purchased a 2007 RCSB 4x4 5.7 for my 31st birthday. Two weeks ago I finished a 3rd gen front end swap.

In an effort to make the truck more modern, I have been dreaming about a full interior swap to a 3rd gen also. Basically I want to create a RCSB 3rd gen which was never produced from the factory.

After reading wiring diagrams for hours, I decided it would be possible to swap in a 3rd gen instrument cluster to my 2007 body harness. I decided this would be the hardest part so why not do it first. Next I will wire up the newer AC controls and eventually will buy a whole 3rd gen dash to bolt in.

Top is the 2007 Cluster. Bottom is the 2015 Cluster I got off ebayy (much better although still outdated for 2021).
    IMG_0402.jpg

I was lucky enough to have a 2016 Interior body harness come with my front clip from when I did the front end conversion. I cut the instrument panel female connector off of it and then ordered a male connector (duplicate to the one inside the cluster). I was then able to make a crossover harness that plugs inline between my 2007 harness and the 2015 cluster.

The Black Female end goes to the 2015 Cluster (Cut from the front clip)
The White Male connector plugs into my 2007 body harness
(My 2007 Harness has a White Female connector that went to the 2007 cluster, it now plugs inline into the white male connector that then goes to the 2015 cluster)

    IMG_0405.jpg IMG_0406.jpg IMG_0407.jpg

The reason for the crossover harness is that most of the pin locations changed between 2007 to 2015. The crossover harness takes the signal coming from my 2007 body harness/ecu and crosses it over to the corresponding pin going into the back of the 2015 cluster.

It took hours to build the crossover harness but to my surprise the first time I plugged everything up and turn on the key, it just worked!
    IMG_0401.jpg

I set the 2015 Cluster inside my 2007 dash and shot this video showing all the gauges working.
    https://streamable.com/882v46

Then I drove around the block to see if the speedo was working. It was and to my surprise the truck even started calculating and displaying MPG info.

    IMG_3411.jpg

Now if I can just reprogram the odometer to be correct....Maybe a custom image on the screen during startup also.

I should also note that I think I like the look of the 2018+ clusters with the square gauges. I may try that next but those will have the Toyota Safety Sense stuff to deal with.

Here is the technical info to be able to do this.

If you read my spreadsheet you will see I outlined all pins of the J28 connector for the 2007 and then for the Pre Aug 2017 production trucks.

The "2017 Pin #" shows which pin from 2017 aligns with the 2007 pins.

For example Pin #5 on my 2007 is Engine Control Module CHK (Check engine light signal) this crosses over to Pin #10 coming into the back of the new cluster.

Everything greyed out was either an empty pin location or not used. The 2007 no longer uses the dimmer wires or info button controls because all of this is built into the newer cluster. On the 2017 side my truck does not have Sonar or Memory Seats so these were greyed out as well.

Other small things to note (highlighted in yellow).

The 2007 has an RSCA off signal coming into the cluster. I am not sure if the newer cluster has this or where the signal goes to. It part of the AirBag ecu. Will research this more.

The 2007 had two sets inputs for signals from the CAN bus. I did not use pins 21,22. The newer cluster only has one set of CAN bus inputs Pins 39,40.

The 2017 has Pin 36 to change "Display" on the steering wheel control. I don't have a new steering wheel yet so this wire is not connected. It could be wired to another dash push button (similar to the traction control button) and pushing the button would cycle through the dispalys. If you did this you would not have to swap the steering wheel controls.

The 2017 has Pin 37 for Transponder Key ECU (security). This is the signal to flash the security light on the cluster when the truck is locked ect. The 2007 truck this light is in the accessory meter near the clock. If you want this to work on your new cluster you will have to tap into the signal, at the accessory meter, coming from the transponder and wire it into this pin on the cluster.

The top right corner has information on part numbers of the newer clusters. I got the one I highlighted in green 83800-0CR00 (same as 83800-0CR01). It is for 5.7 non flex fuel trucks without parking assist or parking aid using a 26 gallon fuel tank.

Oh man, this is very cool. I'm surprised you were able to find a plug to replicate the 07 cluster... who would have thought that that even existed... amazing you did this without cutting your factory harness?

Too bad the physical fit of the cluster is not the same, or this would be on my to-do list.

Believe it or not finding the male Custer plug was very hard. I ordered one from a special electronics warehouse. Obviously Toyota doesn’t have a part number for it so it took lots of research to find one.

The one I have is temporary. It’s designed to be soldered into a circuit board. It was all I could find so I crimped small terminals, insulated with square plastic sleeves, on each wire and slid the over the pins.

I believe I have found a connector that accepts terminal wires put it takes a month to get here from China.

    Nice job!

What is the plan with it? Make it fit the 2nd gen dash? I don't mind the 2nd gen dash, but the instrument cluster bezel design is awful IMO. A custom bezel that fit the 3rd gen cluster would make it look a lot better. And a different steering wheel.

Is the transmission temp gauge part of the information display on the 3rd gen?

I have a hope/hunch that the full 3rd gen dash board will bolt into a 2nd gen truck. (We will soon find out)

    The cluster works.
Next is the 3rd gen AC controls (will arrive in the mail tomorrow)
After that try to bolt in a 3rd gen dash and console.
Swap in a new steering wheel, do some custom wiring to tie and all together and boom a full 3rd gen dash. All the switches should be the same/easy to convert over.

Will prob go with an aftermarket double din radio. I could try to tackle the factory 3rd gen radio but not sure it’s worth it.

If it is then it’s part of the digital display. I didn’t wire in the “Display” steering wheel button yet so I can’t flip through the screens.

I see no needle gauge for trans temp nor a isolated pin in the connector for a trans temp signal. The 07 cluster has a needle trans temp however. I will have to look where it gets it’s signals from.

Sick. The tundra hasn't changed much in 15 years. I wouldn't be that surprised if it was pretty easy to get it working once you get all the parts. For a 5.7 anyway. Could be a different story for a 4.7 or 4.0.

I'll be watching for progress. :D

There is no trans temp gauge on a 2014+.

I had to spend time researching cluster part numbers to make sure I got one for a 5.7 without sonar and with a 26 gal fuel tank.

I believe the full interior swap is doable. I am going to keep moving forward with it. Will definitely keep posting progress!

I dont think the 3rd gen regular cabs were ever available with power doors. Something to look into. :monocle:

I have seen one or two with power doors and a center console shifter. Very rare.

They all use the 2nd gen door panels but have a 3rd gen dash. Reasons I think the 3rd gen dash is a direct bolt in. The regular cab doors are so big I guess Toyota didn’t want to invest in 3rd gen door panels.

Unfortunately all of them all long beds. I decided I would rather convert a 2nd gen short bed to a 3rd gen rather than cut a frame down.

Nice. Reminds me of when i out a 2010 JBL head unit in my 2008. I had to determ/reterm the entire wiring harness to the radio.

I also did the optitron (Limited) gage swap, which was so much better than the standard ones (this was before the 2014 came out). I found that getting the ODO flashed ran about $150 to have some guy working out of his garage do it.

if you don’t plan on reinstalling the old gages, I would just move the terminals over to the new connector instead of using a crossover. Just a thought...

If some guy in his garage can flash the odometer then I bet I can.... I am also some guy in a garage lol.

I have thought about permanently repinning my connector. Haven’t decided yet. The crossover was definitely a good way for R&D/testing.

He had some stuff I’d never seen before... but I’m sure there are people that understand that stuff better than I that can do it themselves. He did have a real business...I was actually referred to him by a dealer because they used him if they had to replace a gage cluster for repairs, etc.

In typical fashion, 14+ have way less features than the older trucks :D

Once upon a time I rolled a Toyota gauge cluster forward to get it to match actual miles for a swap. I found a little chip online for a few bucks that replicated the pulse signal from the vss. A deep cycle battery from my tent trailer, some alligator clips and lots of time at "60mph" rolled it forward to where I needed it. (I got impatient and cranked it to 120mph)

I did it twice. Once to swap in a tach and then again when I found a 4cly white face cluster (super rare for 1st gen tacos).

This method is probably too analoge for modern clusters, and it only works to role forward, but it was fun to figure out.

Amazing what you can learn from other people on the internet. Cool photos but I am sure you are right, newer tech needs newer methods.

Man. That's great work! Thanks for documenting. I do have a recommendation. I would just change the connectors to DB25s instead of hunting for the male connector.

    https://edac.net/products/db25-connector/169

They make both crimp type (for which you need the proper crimping tool) and solder type.
