I've just started noticing this tick recently. Doesn't really bother me and it's intermittent. Maybe I'm noticing it only because I read about it on here?

I'ma start with the steering shaft seal first.

I have the exact same issue it sounds like. Tick matches the RPMs and only when moving. When the truck shifts the tick slows down and then speeds up again with RPMs. Silent on idle and if you stop accelerating and drop it into neutral while coasting down the road and rev it up, no tick. I'm leaning towards something in the transmission. Did you ever figure out the issue?

Stuff some pink fiberglass into the steering shaft if the boot is ripped. $5 fix; disaster abated.

So exhaust manifold is the cause of this? Mine has been doing this since I bought 20k miles ago. Never got louder so I just figured it was part of the Tundra's patina. I may snoop around someday and look for an exhaust trail but I'm not in a hurry.

I dunno, a few of us have posted about it, several of us have it, high-mile, low-mile, and medium-mile engines. I've heard several causes cited, including noisy injectors, valvetrain (sounds like a ticking valve to me), exhaust manifold bolts (in earlier models) and a few other things.

But normally you don't hear it in the cab unless your steering shaft steel is shot.

Mines done it since I bought it. At 182k now. Only does it for the first couple minutes of running then goes away so I don't worry about it. I assume that due to metal expansion from heat that seals the cracks.

Mine is like that and usually shows up on cold days as well. If you can hear it with the windows open it’s most likely an exhaust leak. If it’s only in the cab, it’s the valve train noise which is an easy fix IMO.

Damn that had to be loud haha. Way worse than mine was, but it was still constant ticking for me

I'll throw this out there. I have a ticking which is not constant. I can't really pin point it being related to hot or cold or any other variable, but I can say when the tick is present I can tell a somewhat noticeable difference in acceleration and power. Leads me to believe it is a manifold leak that for whatever reason is worse at times.

My 2000 started ticking when cold from a cracked left manifold. It actually seems to do so less over the years. About 10 years ago JBA shorty headers were the rage to fix this. They are a pain to install.

I want them so bad, but that repair might be the first that is beyond my ability.

Nahhh... it's actually surprisingly easy unless everything is really rusty. I replaced the factory manifolds on my 2001 Tundra with JBAs back in 2005 and it wasn't bad at all. You just need extensions and a good fine tooth 14mm ratcheting wrench. I was lucky in that the flanges on my set were good to go, but I've seen some folks have issues. I also used new factory manifold gaskets if I remember correctly.

Just posted about this on my '19 4.6L. Only under load w heavy acceleration. Happened today when getting on expressway. Will not do it sitting still but definitely tied to the rpms when driving.
Scared the life outta me that I had lifter issues coming on. Odd to me that cracked manifold exhaust would make a tapping noise.
Gonna look some more around it. Sure don't like it!

Not big deal, but this thread is posted in the 2000-2006 forum, so slightly different engine.

    Nice dog!

It does this because the crack is sometimes around just one cylinder so the tick only happens when that cylinder fires.
