Short tube headers were a less expensive option than replacing the cracked OEM manifolds with OEM, and they also bolt up to the existing exhaust system. Switching to long tubes is not a cost effective option because you must rework the rest of the exhaust, and do it with the correct diameter pipe & muffler or you will lose low end power. Common sense dictates that short tube headers are not a waste of time.

You would have to call them, I know they’ve mentioned it, but it’s not on the site

Those just appeared within the past couple of months in addition to the JBAs which have been there for a long time.

It’s the addition of the air injector tubes.

Were the TRD mid Length Headers a direct bolt on set? Guessing they would be... Do you remember if they were legal in Cali?

They were legal in CA, for some odd reason they had 2 bolt flanges at the collector so your cats had to be modified to bolt them up. I wish I bought a set when they were still around.

Do you mean these that I just happen to have sitting ready to be installed??:rofl::rofl:

J/K just wanted to show them off, I'm in love with them and gonna send them off to get ceramic coated...
I don't know if I would call them mid-length but they do bolt up to cats, check out the pic and so far, without having them installed yet they are CA legal.
I have the card sticker too.

I hope you find a set, I just got Extremely lucky with getting mine with my Supercharger set up.
Hopefully, all will be installed by summer.

The air injection system makes the 05/06 more expensive. When I contacted jba asking if the earlier headers would fit the vvti engines they said it would. You can get a wiring harness to bypass the air injection system and not throw a check engine light.

To those thinking you will lose bottom end with long tube headers. Is this just a gut feeling or have you tested headers and you are coming from a place of experience?

I’m surprised nobody mentioned weld quality. Years back a lot of the headers for the first gens were of good quality. Nowadays you’ll have difficulty finding some that are still done well.

The only ones I haven’t heard anyone bitching about for weld quality were the Doug Thorleys. Possibly dirty deeds as well. Just my two cents.

I have the dreaded exhaust ticking as well in my 2006 DC. Rockauto.com has replacement parts for the 2004 version of the V8, but none listed for the 05-06. Anyone know if the exhaust manifolds are interchangeable for the 04 over to the 05-06?

They are not due to air injection

When i did longtubes and got 2.5’’ pipes with a flow master muffler welded in I significantly gained power all through the rpm cycle including low end. It was noticeable improvement. I think if someone went with 3’’ pipes or straight pipes or something with not much back pressure then low end would be lost.

That lines up more with what I've heard. I don't see a 2.5" system with long tubes losing bottom end over what are basically the next step up from a log manifold. I'm no exhaust physicist though.

Yep. Shorties typically loose low end, in exchange for potential high rpm gains.

Long tubes typically retain low end and gain across the whole rpm band.

    and then there are tri-y.

honestly any of the headers be them long, short or tri, should gain all around due to the log manifold just being horrible for anything except turbos

Thanks, man, I basically bought it sight unseen for the full system on a truck.
This time, faith and buyer feedback worked out and got everything pretty cheap.
Using PayPal and trusted apps helped in the comfort of the payment too.
a little over $3k but I'm rebuilding it and taking my time to do everything right, so one thing leads to another, well more and more money is being spent!

Exhaust tuning is similar to intake tuning. Helmholtz resonance (waves or pulses in the pipe) increase scavenging/flow and tunes to certain frequencies/rpms.

Long story short, longer tube equals lower resonant frequency/rpm and shorter equals higher.

But an engine is a dynamic air pump and there are clearance and usually available length issues, so usually looking at 3rd or 4th order wave for tuning. So shorties designed around 4th order could work better than long tubes that can't make the proper length (ie: cat conv position).

Correct tube diameter is even more important than length, too large and you loose everything but top end.

    You may find this interesting:

this is how i always understood it. but that said. any tubular header designed properly should make a noticeable difference going from the stock log manifolds. both will scavenge much better than a log
